My ex-home courses closing, changing - proofs that golf is in decline
Buck Nutz replied to rkim291968's topic in Golf Talk
We took 3 trips to that area from West Chester last year due to boredom in courses in this area. I could see Eagles Nest closing in the next 5 years. The front was rather repetitive but the back was creative thru the woods. But given the club house and supplies they need to do some serious work to survive. We played Elks and Legendary and found both to be very nice. With GN for under $25 we couldn't pass it up -

Is the Norman course you are talking about Elks Run? -
I played out there last week and it was in pretty good shape. The fairways and greens were lush. The rough was pretty hard but it was still all grass. I played Beckett Ridge Country Club today and the pro was talking about Weatherwax. He said they are hoping they keep 2 of the 4 nines open. The rest is supposedly going to be a park. It's a shame, I played in many high school matches there and really enjoy it.

BTW, this course is bordered by the Ohio river so they have a limitless water supply. Very green links style course

If you guys get a chance and want a day trip, head down to the Links at Rising Star. It is one of the Casino courses just inside the Indiana line just off 275. It was a GREAT course in GREAT shape. A buddy and I went for a round after 2 and paid $27. We played very quick so decided to play another 9. When we went to the clubhouse they charged another $14 and said it was a twilight rate. Told us to play as much as we could but to have the cart back in by 8 as the sun is setting earlier. We putted out on 18 in the dark at 7:55 pm. Shot back to back 81s (39-42, 40-41) which is on my better side. Maybe that is why I am so pumped about the course!! It is a great day away. If anyone wants to go down let me know and we can car pool![IMG] [/IMG]

Unfortunately I can't make this Sunday. Our work golf outing is Sunday at Pebble Creek. Hard to pass up a free outing.
-
I am in for Sugar Isle, probably with a plus one. My parents live about 5 minutes from the course so my dad would come out too. Saturday afternoons or Sunday's are best but I can try to manipulate my schedule.

Had a good weekend of golf even though I lost in the quarter final of the club championship. Keep in mind that I was in the 80-89 bracket. Lost to last years club champion but still put up a 79 to his 75. Shot 83 today at a new course (for me), Indian Ridge over in Oxford.

We had about a 10 minute shower at the turn in West Chester. Played my first round match play at green crest. Shot 80 (really well for me) and won 5&4

It is a pretty short course so you can avoid a lot of the "hazards" because you don't have to pound a driver on every hole to get in scoring position. It is a pretty open course that sprawls out instead of being the box style course that has holes playing right next to each other. I don't want it to sound like a sales pitch for the course but it was one of my two home courses throughout high school. It went thru a bad spell about 5 years ago but with new management it is on the right track. I played out there earlier in the year (I am now over an hour away but went back and played it while visiting my parents) and it was coming back into shape and played very nice.

How was Oasis? My wife has worked summers at TPC Riversbend since college (teacher by school year). She has a co worker who also picked up a PT job at Oasis. I get out to riversbend a few times a year and have been extended an invite to Oasis. Is it worth the hour drive?

Not a bad day. My usual playing partner played his match play opponent in the club tournament (my match is next weekend) so I tagged along and played. 42-41 83 Front was so so. Struck the ball well but just couldn't score. Drive on 9 got me in trouble and took a double. Back 9 was fantastic thru 7 holes (+1). Took a double, triple on the closing two (par 35 back). Tough pill to swallow but it was still a pretty good round.

I was in London for the week (training) and got in two rounds at National Golf Links. With the exception of the cart paths and bunkers (full of water due to rain) the course was in great shape. I had never played here before but had seen it from the highway several times. $23 after 3pm for an all you can play twilight deal. I would definitely come back. Also played National Road one night. All I can say is if you want to score well and feel good about yourself you should play here. Kind of a goat track but it is still better than being at work.

Nice. I know you play north of Dayton but how far north?

You can find the tournament details here. You sign up for a flight (honor system) depending on your handicap. You play a qualifying round on July 18th. If you cannot make the 18th, you can play up to 14 days before the 18th but need someone to play with to attest your score. From that point you are seeded (if your score doesn't jive with your flight you MAY be moved to a different flight) and provided you opponents phone number. You then have 10 days to complete you match play. This goes on for the duration of the tourney. If all scores are in before the 10 days they may start play ahead of schedule. Got in 27 today. Green Crest GC par 70 Shot 38- 39. Struck the ball well. Missed a lot of birdie putts. Had 3 really good chances and another 5 mid range but I couldn't get anything to drop. 2 doubles made me say hmm but really encouraged. Club championship starts at that course 7-18. Played 9 at Pleasant Hill in the evening. Par 35 Started with birdie, par, bogey then the magic happened. HOLE IN ONE from 166, 8i. It was down wind about a club maybe club and a half. Hung it a little right with my right to left ball flight. Landed on the slope on the right side of the green, just over a bunker and the slope mixed with the draw kicked it dead left and in the cup!! I promptly doubled the next hole by duck hooking my drive with shaky hands. Ended up shooting +1 36. I love this game!

It is flighted and stroked so everyone has a fighting chance!

The 18th is the qualifier for the Green Crest course Championship. It is the final seeding round before match play starts and is a requirement for entry. Anyone else want to get in the tourney? It is 3 minutes off 75 in West Chester

Kids are taking me to the Reds game or I would be all over it.

Shot 38 on a last minute round at Pleasant Hill. Most enjoyable round of the year and not due to score. We actually had to rush to get in front of a league so no warm up, just load and go. Didn't make any wagers, just played. It was so laid back after the first tee shot...just the type of day you soak up. The really good ball striking didn't hurt. Hope to have these more enjoyable rounds more often.

It was a 2 part test, the first being which form of GG did I like better for future use. The second was to see if one was a more accurate tracking system. I had yet to try to edit a round so I didn't know how easy/ difficult it would be. I ran both the belt tap and phone app and found that I personally prefer the hardware system. It was very easy to work into my routine and didn't miss a tag all day. I didn't like carrying my phone around but I am glad I tried. I also edited my round via phone (which I ended up deleting so I didn't have a duplicate round submitted) and found it harder than doing it on my PC. The only down side was that after the round we went to eat and started comparing stats from the round and when I go to the hardware system only those won't be available until I get a chance to download them. Not a huge downside but that is the only thing that stuck out. Both seemed to be pretty accurate but I had to delete three strokes where the belt system "sensed" a swing where one wasn't taken. No big deal.

I am going to run an experiment tomorrow and probably drive my playing partners crazy. I turned the other guys onto GG and they will be using it for the first time tomorrow. I found the app (via Facebook ad) and downloaded it for a 9 hole round Sunday. Found it to be fairly accurate (more so than some of my long iron shots) but I had been looking at the GG hardware package for some time. I found a set on Craigslist for $60 and decided to take a shot. Seller said he used them one time and hated the hassle and from the look of them there is no scuffing or gouging so they appear brand new. I am going to run both the app and the belt hardware and compare the numbers post round to see if one is more accurate than the other (discrepancies will be noted and decided via google maps). Has anyone else tried this?

Weather looks great for Tuesday. There is one spot left on GN for Pipestone at 8am

Green Crest GC 68.3/ 119 A very lousy and somewhat embarrassing 87 (47/40). I could not make solid contact on the front side. Thin or topped shots were the fail of the day. I just started a "my swing" thread and gotten some really good feedback (thank you) but it isn't something I should be thinking about DURING a swing. After 12 holes I said forget it and just started swinging, played in 1 over the rest of the way. I just have to remember to differentiate the range lessons and actual rounds. The range is to get a swing engrained while the course is made to use the swing you brought. Changing a swing during a round leads to a lot of crash and burn.
