I don't exactly understand swing weight. I tried a little experiment a little while ago. I have a Titletist 917 d2 driver I bought used a couple of weeks ago. It is a 10.5 degree loft. Has a Diamana 60 gram regular flex shaft. The way I measure it is I take the club and sit it on the ground like I am getting ready to hit. I take a 48" wooden ruler and put it on the ground under the hosel on the ground or floor and measure to the top of the grip. The best I can measure it is 45 5/8 I put a stick on marker on the face and hit 10 balls then I put on a new stick on marker and made a mark 1" down from the top of the grip and hit 10 more balls. My pattern this way was much more consistent and I feel like I have much more control of the club. Now if if cut the club off 1 inch is it going to swing completely different? Will the ball go as far? Does swing weight mainly have to do with how the club feels. If I cut 1 inch off will the head feel light I don't like to choke down on the grip. I feel like a standard grip held at the top of the club is just right. If I choke down the grip feels too small so I don't want to do that. I guess what I am saying is if I cut one inch off will it make that much difference?

Good idea to shorten my backswing as a senior?
ThumbtackR9 replied to ThumbtackR9's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Yeah my Medicare Card with a lot of extra stuff too. I just do the best I can. I'll hit a good one every now and then. So far it's enough to keep me going back. I did buy me a used Titletist 917 d2 driver. I was used to hitting a shorter driver, although the swing weight was way off but I liked the shortness of it. I may talk to the shop where I got the driver and see it they can shorten it up a little and still keep close to the swing weight somehow. With shorter club I can hit closer to the sweet spot most of the time. Is there anyone on the forum that does work like this. We only have one shop in town. I wouldn't mind sending it to someone and let them shorten it, reswingweight and regrip it. -
Weights of different clubs
ThumbtackR9 replied to ThumbtackR9's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Yeah I probably need some lessons. I took some years back and I wasn't too impressed. I went probably 10 times. The guy would give me a bucket of balls to hit and make a suggestion every now and then. I was probably playing worse after I got through. I hit the six iron on the launch monitor and i was carrying it about 140 which for me is probably about right. That was the only iron I hit.The fitter didn't say anything about how high the ball was going. The clubs felt good on the monitor hitting off the carpet but when I started hitting off the turf I am having problems. I'll just work on my swing some and see what happens. I know it is me. Don't think it has anything to do with the clubs. Thanks for the suggestions Tiger. I am going to post some swings first chance I get. -
I have posted that I bought used set of Ping G20 Irons. So far I am not hitting them very good. I think my swing plane is way to steep. I called the golf shop where I got them and the guy said that is probably what my problem is. The clubs have the standard ping grip. I like the way they look. What I was wondering about is the weight of clubs. I have 4 pitching wedges. I have a Adams Tech 05 that weighs 430 grams. A older Adams Idea that weighs 415 grams. A Cobra Z fly that weighs 400 grams and the Ping G20 weighs 440 grams. It feels much heavier than the older Adams at 415 grams. Will that make much difference? I am going to have to try and learn to take very shallow divots to hit the G20's. I was just wondering if there was kind of a standard that clubs weigh. Going to play in the morning and see how it goes. I went to the course the other day and just hit a few balls but I was getting a huge deep divot and no distance. The ball was getting height I am not used to but no distance. Thanks for the comments.

Sorry I meant to put cfs Ping shaft. I knew cfm didn't sound right.

Seventy year old senior high handicapper. I have made several post on different things. I posted that I bought a used set of Ping g20 irons with the ping cfm regular shaft. I finally got a chance to go to the course and hit a few today. Just hit some balls. The irons felt great hitting inside on the swing monitor off the carpet. At the course it seems like everything goes straight up in the air and I don't know how many balls I just flat shanked and I don't hardly ever do that. I hit a 8,9 and pw. I could barley get 90 to 100 yards out of the nine iron. I have never had clubs that I get this much height out of but I am not getting any distance. Is it just my swing or is it common for these clubs. The clubs seem to have a lot of offset. Could this matter. I also have a set of Cobra Z Fly irons with A flex shafts. It seemed like I got a little more distance with them but not as much height. Any comments.

I do lift my left heel at times. I need to try and make myself do it more. Not much but just a little. -

The name of the video on youtube is Senior Golf Lessons 2/6 backswing. He has several videos and most of them are on a shorter swing. It looks like if you can't make a big turn and are not real flexible it could be a good swing to learn. Take a look at his video and see what you think. I forgot to put that I will be 71 the end of this month. I know I am not going to hit it 250 down the middle or hit a 7 iron 175. If I just can be consistent and keep my drives in the fairway and average 210 or 215 I would be elated. I hope I can work with this new driver and get to that point. On the swing monitor I was carring the driver around 190 and the 6 iron he had made up around 130. I know I hit a lot of my balls with and open club face which is killing my distance. Going to keep working on it. Thanks for the input. -
I am a male senior golfer. Just started back playing a few months ago. Went to the pro shop here in town and got on the swing monitor. Haven't been on one in years. I figured I would be in a senior flex but it turned out I have enough swing speed left for a regular flex. With the different drivers and shafts we tried I was in the 83 to 86 mph swing speed. With a 6 iron I was at 67 to 68. With the different drivers and shafts I tried I ended up buying a used Titletidt 917d2 driver with a regular flex Dianna 60 shaft. On the monitor it was giving best results for spin, launch and carry. I also ended up buying some used Ping g20 irons with their cfs shafts in regular flex. It seemed like I hit them good inside on the monitor. I was carting the 6 iron around 130 which is about all I can do. I stopped on the way home at the school yard and hit a few with the nine iron and couldn't hit it 80 yards and shaking shots which I don't generally do. I was hitting off taller grass like being in the rough. I hope this was what was going on. Anyway I was watching a video on YouTube about senior swings. I myself don't have a lot of flexibility. There is a guy on there that has a video and he basically makes a 1/2 to a 3/4 swing. That's about where I am at. The guy that has the video calls his site senior golf lessons 2/6 backswing. When I watch this video that looks like that is about as far as I can bring the club back comfortably. Would this be a good swing to copy?

I would be willing to say I couldn't hit that 11 yards. lol It would be a great conversation piece.

Just bought some like new from Callaway Preowned clubs two Cobra hybrids. I bought a 4 and a 5 hybrid. Both have the fly z shaft in light flex. Both look like they were hardly used. One has a winn dry tac grip in 1/16" oversize and one ( the 4) has some kind on jumbo type grip. It is almost the same size from top to bottom. I use a standard grip my self which is about right from how you tell if you have the right grip. Anyway I took both clubs out to my hitting net in my yard and took a couple of good balls to hit. I also put the stickers on the face so I could tell where I was hitting the ball . I started off the small matt I have. I used the 5 first. The club feels good when swinging it. It almost has no sound when you hit the ball which I don't care for. I tried the 4 with the jumbo grip and I could never hit the ball in the center of the face. I tried to hit on the matt and then went to the grass. Didn't really seem to make any difference. I could do fairly well with the 5. I just wonder if the grip could make that kind of difference. I always hit the ball low on the face. I really figured the club would have a good tink sound but it doesn't. I went back a read a couple of reviews and they said it doesn't have much sound. I took the stickers off the face and just barley punched the ball with both clubs and the sound just isn't there. I have a callaway 6 and a callaway 3 hybrid and they sound completely different. You can really tell when you hit the sweetspot with the callaways but I don't know how its going to be with the Cobras. Does anyone use these clubs and what do they think about them? I had bought some Cobra Fly Z irons 6 through pw so I got these hybrids to go with them. I am going to regrip all of them with standard Winn Dry Tac grips.

Senior survey on driver loft
ThumbtackR9 replied to ThumbtackR9's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I am going to make an appointment to get on the monitor. Hope I am not wasting my money. The guy said he would do a full bag fitting for 100.00 which isn't bad I don't think. What I really want to know what driver specs I should be hitting and firons also but mainly the driver. I do fairly well the the irons just my driver killing me. I don't necessarily want a brand new driver and would be satisfied if he could use one of my driver heads and maybe change the shaft or if he has a used driver he could fix me up with. I just can't pay 500.00 or 600.00 or more for a driver right now. I'll just have to do the fitting and go from there but like I said it is mainly the driver I am concerned about. I feel almost positive I will fall in the senior shaft bracket. I just can imagine me swinging more than 75 or 80 with a driver. I'll just have to wait and see. -
Senior survey on driver loft
ThumbtackR9 replied to ThumbtackR9's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
What are some of yall's swing speeds? I am going next week for a fitting. Looks like most of you that listed your clubs use a 9.5 or 10.5 degree driver. I am curious what the swing monitor will say what I should use. I'll post my information after I get it done. -

Senior survey on driver loft
ThumbtackR9 replied to ThumbtackR9's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Thanks for all the comments. We only have one fitter here where I live. He owns his own golf shop and has been in business for 17 years. He seems to be knowledgeable from what I have talked to him. I watched a couple of videos on you tube by Tom Wishon. I understood a little of it. He had one on about the adjustable loft and it sounds alot like what Hacker James said in this post so when I get fitted I am not going with that. I don't have tons of money to spend on a driver and I am not sure how to go about buying one and getting fitted. I think I will go ahead and do a bag fitting for everything except the putter. I guess on the driver he will tell me what loft, lie shaft, type grip and so forth. I should have the option of what head and shaft I want to buy and what grip I like and I guess he will put it together. I am going to try and go one day next week. I just wonder with me being a high handicapper will I really be able to tell a difference in my drives with a fitted driver. I'll keep everyone updated. -
Just wondering what different degree loft drivers some of the seniors on here are using and what shaft. Senior shaft or regular or stiff. For now I am going to bite the bullet and have a driver made. I lost count but I think I have 8 different drivers from over the years. They go from 9.5 to 13.5 in loft. I bought a Callaway X2 hot off ebay because it had been shortened. I like the way the shorter club feels but the swing weight is way ( 16 or points off) off. Too light. I came home and put some lead tape on the head but I think I am just going ahead a get a new driver made. Don't know exactly what I want. I may ask the fitter if he can reshaft my X2. It is a 10.5 but I can go to a 9.5 , 11.5 and 12.5. I like the looks of the head also so maybe I can use it. I just don't want a really long shaft. RIght now I think he measured it at 43 1/8. I would like to not go more than 44" I have always heard the older we get the more loft we need. I have an old Taylor Made Burner 9.5 draw with a Taylor Made stiff shaft I bought at Academy years ago and it seems I can hit it about as well as anything else I have. Just wondering if anyone has any information on their clubs. I am 70 with a half bad left shoulder. I know my swing speed with a driver can't be more than 75 or 80 and wouldn't surprise me if it is less. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

Sent my Callaway xr clubs back. Bought some Cobra Fly Z used irons that look like new. Really like the way they look. They have senior shafts in them which I am convinced I need now. I have trouble with my left shoulder and I just don't have the swing speed. I am going to buy some hybrids to go with the irons. I have a 6 through pw. I'll probably get a 3,4 and 5 hybrid.. I am looking at some Taylor Made M1's at Callaway Preowned in my price range. They also have some M2's in my price range also. Anybody use these or could recommend another hybrid. They make so many. I haven't been on a swing monitor in years. We only have one golf shop here where I live. I may go in tomorrow and see if he has time to let me get on his monitor adn check at least my swing speed. I was watching a video on youtube and the guy was demonstrating a couple of different swings on a monitor. One of the swings he said was 87 and the other 84. I would say I am nowhere close to that from what I could see on the video. It's hell to get old. Anyway has anyone used the M1 or M2 hybrid.

I added a little lead tape to the head of it just for the heck of it. Gonna play Monday. We only have one golf shop here so I may go by and let him check it. I know I like the feel of it being short and find that if I don't try to kill the ball I can hit it pretty close to the sweet spot and I can really tell the difference.

If I can get to that I would really be happy.

I chipped a bunch of balls this afternoon off my mat here at the house and I think they are growing on me a little. I think the bottom grove having the white line on it makes the bottom edge of the club look like it is sitting higher than it really is if that makes sense. I made quite a few good chips where it really felt solid. I do know that when it is a good hit it really comes off the club face. Here is another question. I bought a Callaway X2 Hot driver off ebay. Wanted to experiment with a shorter driver. This one measures 43 1/8. I really like the feel of the shorter driver. I need to carry it in and have the swing weight checked I guess. I put a few pieces of lead tape on the sole. Can't really tell much difference. I wonder what swing weight I would be looking for. If I don't try and swing to hard I can hit it pretty close to the sweet spot most of the time. Oh well, time to go to bed. Thanks for all the comments.

I have some older adams tech o5 hybrid type clubs with steel gs 75 r 300 shafts in regular flex. Not sure of the swingweight.. I want to put some type of senior shaft in the 7 through pitching wedge. I can check the weights of the clubs with my scales. The pitching wedge weighs 425 grams with the steel shaft and a lamkin grip. Wonder if I could go ahead and pull the shaft and lets say the head weighs 300 grams. Could I buy a shaft and grip combination that weighs 125 grams and be close to where I was at. Just wondering. Thanks

Did you just feel that they didn't sit right on the ground or especially a practice matt. I can trade them back in and lose some money but I think I would rather do that and be satisfied with the club. I don't know if all Callaway clubs are like this or not..
-
Anyone playing Callaway XR irons? I bought a set about a month and a half ago. I just can't make myself completely satisfied with them. They have the Fubuki AT 55 x5ct shafts with regular flex. I just don't like the way they sit on the ground when you address the ball. It is like the bottom on the club is rounded so much the leading edge of the club sits too high unless you lean the club way forward. I have two other sets of clubs and they don't do this.. If you really lay the club back to hit sort of a flop shot the bottom edge of the club is about the center line of the ball. The clubs have a thick rounded lip. I am not sure what to do. I bought them from Callaway Preowned clubs and I talked to them today. I was just wondering if anyone else plays these clubs and what they think.
-
I have a older set of Adams Tech 05 clubs. 3,4,5,6, are hybrids and the irons have a little wider sole. I also have a older set of Adams Idea clubs. The tech o5 have steel regular flex shafts and the Idea clubs have senior shafts. I bought a new set of Callaway xr irons a month or so ago with regular shafts and I am think I should have gotten senior shafts. I can hit all three and it does seem like the ball comes off the face better with the Callaways but they just feel stiff. Really intruly just putting all three clubs on the ground and looking down at them I like the looks of the Adams Tech 05 better. I am thinking about switching them to senior shafts and was just wondering what would be a good one to try. Been looking at some pull offs on ebay. Just a thought.
