Cavity Backed Wedges vs. Blade Wedges
Gaviao replied to Gaviao's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Okay...... I will check into lessons. Something I've been thinking of doing anway seeing as I've never had one. But for sh#ts and giggles. Which club would you suggest? -
So I'm sure that this topic has been covered before but here goes..... I'm looking at buying new clubs. I'm looking at two possible avenues, used and Gigagolf. For used I've been going to golf stores and trying out different kinds of clubs to get an idea of what I like and then looking for deals on used ones. For Gigagolf I thought I would buy a club to see what I think since their so cheap. On to the question at hand...... Right now I have a 56 and a 60 blade wedges. I'm beginning to be able to hit the 60 on almost full swings, but I still have a hard time hitting the 56. So should I get a cavity backed 56 or a blade 56? Or for that matter should I also get a cavity backed 60? Here's a link to the wedges I'm looking: http://www.gigagolf.com/wedges_listing.jsp right now I'm between S2 and the SGS but I'm up for suggestions. Thank for the help

Thanks for the reply. I think the "Clones vs Brand names" argument is starting to make sense to me. First and foremost I am a musician, specifically a guitarist and the same debate can be found in that arena as well. After a lot of research and discussion on guitars I basically came to the following conclusion.... If you have the money to spend then why wouldn't you buy a name brand guitar? For example an American made Fender Stratocaster(think Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn etc) which sells for roughly $900 to $1,100 (and up) depending on the model. The resell value will be significantly better and you have the security of the history of that brand as well as knowing that you have a "pro" quality piece of equipment. However if you are on a budget/learning to play/just don't play that often, then you can find a "clone" that will suit your needs. Like a Squier Vintage Modified Stratocaster which sells for roughly $250 to $300 depending on the model. The resell value basically doesn't exist and there is a better chance that the product won't live up to the hype. For guitars the trick is knowing the components that are vital and making sure that the clone company doesn't skimp in those areas and, as you mentioned, the company's customer service is top notch. Let me know if I am off base here as I'm new to golf

Good point

The closest Golfsmith is about an hour and a half from me, but there is a Golf Galaxy about 45 mins from me. Like I said the Cleveland felt AMAZING in my hands, just had a harder time hitting it. Then again it was a GI set and the Callaway set were SGIs. Back on the consitancy issue I would have to say that the Nike set was the most consistent and the farthest, but I hit them with a consitant draw.
-
Gotcha... to be honest I meant that the callaway's stayed the closest to center. I did hit some of the other clubs with a pretty consistent draw, which was weird cause on the course I usually slice.

Best way to know which shaft flex I should use
Gaviao replied to Gaviao's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
The problem is that I don't know my swing speed. When I was at Dick's Sporting Goods the computer read the club head swing and it went everywhere from 48 to 68 mph(and possibly more, to honest I wasn't paying that close of attention). I was hitting 7 irons with steel shafts. My age is 31, I am fairly strong (for my height of 5'5") and I'll have to get back to you on the driver flex and 8 iron flex. I want to say that I hit my 8 iron around 150 yards. -
So I finally had an excuse to get to a Dick's sporting goods and test hit a couple of different irons. Here's what I found... My favorite "feel" was a set of Cleveland game improvement irons(I believe they were the CG16 Black Pearl Irons), but I wasn't very consistent with them I really liked the Callaway Diablo Edge - R, definitely the most consistent I also liked the Nike VrS irons. Not as consistent as the Callaway's but I hit those the farthest. So which is the most important? "Feel", consistency, or distance? I also tried Adams, Cobra, and Taylormade but I was not a fan. To be honest I was a little surprised as I thought I would like the Cobras... So I'm planning on going to a different store to hit some more clubs but I did have a couple of questions... One possible route I'm considering is the used route and I'm having a little difficulty finding the older models of the above three brands that I liked. So any help there would be great. Also The other route I am considering is the clone route. Now I know there is a lot of debate and I promise I'm not trying to stir the pot here, like I said I am also considering the used route as well. For those of you who play/have played clones which do you feel is the best clone brand? The two that I have looked at are Pinemeadow and Gigagolf . Thanks for all of the help, seriously this forum has REALLY helped improve my game. Also I really don't want to start a debate over the clone thing. I am giving equal weight to both options and in the end I promise to make an informed decision

I'm looking at getting new clubs and I'm not sure if I should get regular flex, stiff, etc...etc...etc... So what is the best way to know which to get? I'm sure heading to a golf store would be the best, but the closest that would be able to tell me is at least 30 mins away. So is there a way to do this on my own? Would it help if I posted a video of my swing? Or do I need to suck it up and make the trip to a professional golf store

So I was at Dick's Sporting Goods trying out some new irons. When the sales associate setup the computer for the "driving range" he took a couple of shots to make sure it was up and running. I noticed that he bent WAY over at his waist to hit the ball as opposed to myself as I stand fairly straight up. Are these just different techniques? Or is one way better than the other? By the way he claimed that he usually shot in the 70's... Thoughts?

Right now I'm working on doing a half hour on an eliptical in the morning 5-6 days a week. My hope is to start fitting in additional workouts after work... namely the "Insanity" program. Oh! Plus more golf

Motown88 That site is sick! Thanks for the link. So what I'm hearing from everyone is that the Mojos(or something cheaper) is fine for now, but I'm going to want and upgrade as my game gets better... just like my clubs

Where should the ball line up in your stance
Gaviao replied to Gaviao's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I modified my stance by opening WAY up, but that has never been consistent and it forced me to play a miss hit .... which means I usually miss the green... just one of my many problems -
Currently I am hitting Nike Mojo golf balls. I do like them, I was just wondering if there might be something better for a beginner. http://www.golfsmith.com/product/30038252/nike-mojo-golf-balls-double-dozen-
-
When I started golfing I got the advice that the club I am hitting with changes where I line up my feet in relationship to the ball. So if I am hitting the ball with my 5 iron the ball should be in the "middle" of my stance. If I am hitting the ball with say a 7 iron then the ball should be towards the "back" of my stance. With the driver the ball should line up slightly in front of my left foot(I'm a righty) and with the wedges the ball should be slightly behind my right foot. 3 iron in the "front' of my stance etc...etc...etc... Last week however I went golfing with a friend who lined up ever shot in the middle of his stance and he out shot me(not a tough thing to do mind you) So..... which way is correct?
-
I've been choking up, I basically place my right hand thumb on top of the "alignment marker" at the bottom of the grip. My uncle was my height and I know that he played with shorter clubs so I will definitely look that way soon. I do have a stupid rookie question..... Could you explain more about the "lie angle"
-
Got it, like I said honest question.
-
Just out of curiosity why the backlash against clones? As a guitarist I play knockoffs all the time, they don't appreciate in value like the name brands and the fit and finish isn't always as good... but a lot of times you get a guitar that's not too far off a name brand guitar for half the price. So, honest question, how does this differ in golf?
-
Well it's good to know that I'm not crazy to try and buy new clubs. As far as getting new clubs... Is used the best way to go? Should I even bother with clones? What brands should I look at and am I right in going for "game improvement" clubs?
-
I forgot to mention that I recently have read a lot of articles/forum posts/reviews on "game improvement" irons, sounds like something I should look into.
-
Haven't posted in awhile....sorry. So since my last post I have improved my game, nothing spectacular but last week I played a pretty wide open course and shot a 49 on 9 holes AND got shot my first ever par on the first hole.... so getting there. I've been looking at possibly getting new clubs, specifically new irons, and wanted to know if I'm at a point to start looking for new clubs or if I'm just having a "I want something new and shiny" moment. I now would like to take a moment to apologize for the TON of information I'm about to put out there, just want to give you all the details..... Here's what I have: Top Flite Cannon 460cc 10.5" loft TI-Power 3 and 5 wood (not sure of the loft) 3,4,6,7,8 Northwestern (Tom Weiskopf) irons with new(er) Medalist grips. All are in roughly the same condition. Acer XDS pro 5 iron Trend XTS 56 wedge Next CX3 60 wedge I also have a "Head" pitching wedge More info on me... I am 5'5" and have a floor to wrist measurement of 30" I do not know what my swing speed is, though I use to play with a 4 hybrid with a regular flex graphite shaft and it always felt "lose" to me but I haven't tried to swing it in awhile. I am on a budget, I CANNOT drop $300 to $400 on a set of irons. I would like to keep it to $150 tops on irons. I have no problem going the used route and I have looked into clones such as GigaGolf and Pinemeadow and would have no problem playing a set of clones if the price is right and the quality is decent.... I do not play enough to care if I have name brand clubs or not. Sorry for the long post and thank you for any feedback

So I played 9 holes yesterday with my cousin, we played the back nine and it started rough. But by hole 15 I started to improve. Finally on the 17th I borrowed my cousin's Callaway Perfect Plus 3 wood and hit a dead straight drive down the fairway. When I got up to the ball I realized that I hit roughly 260 - 270 yards... that felt gooooooooddd.
-
So first time out playing, well seriously playing anyway, and I shot a 70... on 9 holes My cousin, who I went with, said that it was pretty good for my first time out. What's more important was that I had a blast.. even tough I clearly suck I have to say I didn't expect to use my wedge as much as I did!

What are the best courses in Michigan.
Gaviao replied to JWILL203's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
I play in SE michigan and I go to Wolf Creek Golf Course outside of Adrian MI http://www.thegolfcourses.net/golfcourses/MI/1772.htm Being that I'm REALLY new to the game I'm not able to comment on how challenging it is... as ANY course would be a challenge for me... but the people who work there are really nice and the course is well maintained. Also several of the holes are nestled back in some really nice woods. I also live close to The Legacy: http://www.legacybyarthurhills.com/main.htm Haven't played there yet but it looks really nice. -
So what is the difference between hybrids and fairway woods? Awhile back I asked what other clubs I needed and the overwhelming response was to get a 56 wedge and a 3/5 wood. However when I've gone to a sports store looking at clubs there are a TON of hybrids compared to 3/5 woods... this also means that there are more on sale Should I consider getting a hybrid instead of a fairway wood? Or is this a personal preference thing? Lastly I noticed that hybrids are classified by degrees, so what would be the hybrid equivalent to 3 wood and a 5 wood? p.s. I got the 56 wedge
