  1. Thanks for the replies. I'll try and find some more info on the two drivers that I'm looking at. As far as getting new clubs altogether... I completely understand where all of you are coming from but I just simply cannot justify the expense... even the cheaper beginner sets. I'm hoping to get better clubs here and there as I can. I have new wedges, new/newer hybrids, new putter, and hopefully soon a new/newer driver and woods. So right now it's just my irons that are older.
  2. So I have a fairly old used set of clubs. the Driver has a small head, especially when compared to the oversized drivers. I've tried to hit with it at the driving range and I've had a real hard time getting anything close to resembling a decent drive. Then I asked my brother-in-law to use his driver(Golden Bear Driver 10") for a ball or two, he was at the range with me, and by the second ball I hit my first drive over 200 yards. So the question is should I spring for a new driver or should I suck it up and learn how to hit with my old driver? AND if you think I should get a newer driver I have two in mind. The first is a used King Cobra driver for $40, the other is a new Top Flite 460cc 10.5" Driver for $18. Also if someone could explain to me what the 460cc and the 10.5" mean? Thanks!
  3. Well I'm new so I know that this is not an impressive shot at all, but I went to the range and hit my first drive over 200 yards!
  4. So I went out this morning with my future brother-in-law and we went through 3 large bags together... and NO BLISTERS! I used a little tap and that seems to help. Also I think I might have figured out what the problem might have been... of course I'm guessing here. But I think that when my cousin told me to tighten my grip, I tightened my right hand instead of letting the glove on my left hand do it's job... if that makes sense. Also I think that I was trying to push the ball with my arms as opposed to pulling the club with my hips... again if that makes sense
  5. Gotcha... so what I'm hearing is loosen the grip a bit AND get new grips on my clubs. So I come back to are new grips something I can replace by myself or do I need to take them to a pro shop? Also what grips might you recommend? Here is a site that I was looking at for grips: http://www.golfsmith.com/display/category/cm/grips Thoughts?
  6. So I bought some tape and it helped, but I am interested in the several post referring to my grip being too tight/wrong. When I first started hitting I had a BAD tendency to slice. So my cousin suggested that my grip might be too soft therefore the club was sliding in my hands opening the club face. So what's the fix? Is it a not too tight but not too soft thing? OR should I seriously take a look at getting better grips? And if I end up getting better grips is putting them on something I can do or do I need to take them to a pro shop?
  7. Right between ring finger and middle finger on the top of my palm and on my pinky, however those were from the day that I hit the 2 large bags and I just keep reopening them... not in a serious way. The one that I got today, and is why I posted this thread, is in the middle of middle finger. Good to know that the simple answer is to get some tape, I play guitar so earning callouses is nothing new to me. In answer to another question posted in this thread. Yes my grips are old... as are my irons ;-P
  8. Okay so just in case you haven't seen any of my other threads... I am VERY new to the game, so sorry for the stupid questions Anyway I've been getting blisters almost every time I go to the range AND except for the first time I went to the range (and went through 2 large bags) ALL of the blisters are on my right hand. I bought a glove for my left and I cut back on the amount of balls I hit (only 1 large bag at a time) Thoughts?
  9. Cool. That's good to know! I did have a couple of questions though... What is the difference between the putter I have and a blade style putter? To be honest I bought the putter I have because it was on sale for $13. Also what's the difference between hybrids and drivers/woods? And what does the 22 degrees printed on ym 4 hybrid mean?
  10. So... WAY new to the game and not a lot of cash to get new(and good) clubs. I was able to find the bulk of what I think I need(used and on sale), but I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. Here's what I have: Used Northwestern "Tom Weikopf Classic Pro" 3 - 9 irons(no wedges) and driver. *I have no idea how old they are, but they're in good condition* A SiMac by Simon Golf 52 degree wedge http://tinyurl.com/2ffsp7o A M.A.C. by Simon Golf 4 hybrid(it says 22 degrees on it?) http://tinyurl.com/35drkoo And a Roll In R10 Putter http://tinyurl.com/35nvbml I have a feeling I might want to look at more wedges???? Obviously I'm not sure and could use your help. Thanks.
  11. Can I find these in a pro shop/sports equipment shop? Or can I find them online?
  12. So I was watching a little bit of the US open and I noticed that the players seem to move their legs closer together for shorter shots while they kept they're legs farther apart for drives and longer shots. Am I crazy or am I on the right track?
  13. So I've been hearing about these foam practice balls that behave like real balls but they fly much shorter. Do the plastic practice balls behave in the same way?
  14. I'm another newbie and I have to say that this thread has helped a lot as this was something I was curious about as well. The 1st time I went out it was too a course, and being that I don't have a decent swing at all, this proved to be fairly fruitless. Now I've hit the driving range twice with a 3rd time planned and I already feel better about going on the course. Now I see that going on the course is going to be another form of valuable practice that I can't get on the range. Also I didn't know about the range balls either... makes me a feel a little better about my distances
  15. I'll give this a try. However I have to ask... What is the deal with the 7I? The first time I tried golf the person I was with handed me a 7I and said "just stick with this for now". And of course there's the part of the movie "Tin Cup" where Kevin Costner breaks all of his clubs but the 7I and plays the rest of the course with the 7I... So I'm just curious... why is the 7I held in such regard? Or am I way off and it's just like any other club.
  16. Well to be honest I'm not sure I'm going to be hitting 150 balls in one setting anytime soon as I got some pretty decent blisters from that, but maybe one large bag twice a week would be better I wouldn't be opposed to taking lessons but I don't have a lot of money to put towards this game right now... hence my used clubs. I am heading out to the range tomorrow with my cousin who has played golf for awhile so hopfully he can help me out a bit. I'm also trying to get some of my other friends that golf to head out with me with the hopes that maybe they can help me out. In the meantime I'll check out those videos.
  17. Thanks for the good replies! To be honest I noticed this trend somewhere in the middle of the two large bags, at the end I was shanking every ball... and getting some decent blisters. Now I'm noticing a lot of talk about good contact with the ball, can anyone explain some more on this? Or is it just as it implies and I'm not getting good contact between the club and the ball. Also Jetfan 1983 mentioned the "stack and tilt" method. Where can I find examples of this method? Or could someone explain it a little. Thanks again for the great responses. oh yeah... "scoop" ?
  18. So I went to a driving range today to try and work on my swing after watching some videos on youtube. So after 150 or so balls I noticed something strange. All of my shots, not counting the MANY that I sliced or just plan screwed up, they all went about 125 yards. Didn't matter which club I used... 3 through 9 iron and a driver (one of the shots with my driver did go around 175 yards). Is this normal?
  19. Thanks! That's really good to know. I ended up finding another used set of used clubs. They're Northwestern "Tom Weiskopf Pro Classic" 4-9 irons and a driver. I picked them up for $15, at the time mostly because the set I mentioned above is also in pretty bad cosmetic shape (lots of rust and stains) so it's good to know that I'll most likely be better off with the Northwestern set.
  20. So I am EXTREMELY new to the game. I've only played golf twice and hit balls out at a park/driving range a handful of times and I've never had any lessons. I recently came into possession of some older used clubs (which is what has gotten me to try and play) but I'm curious about proper club length. The clubs are a mixed set of women's and junior clubs and being that I'm a shorter guy (5'5") I thought that they might make a better fit for me. I'm I right in thinking this? Or should I look at getting different clubs? On that line of thinking if/and most likely when I get newer clubs how can I judge proper length? Or am I putting too much thought into proper club length
  21. Good to know I'm not the only one that's so new to this :) As far as the handicap I wasn't sure what to put... so I went with the largest number it would let me. lol! I went out today and it was pretty ugly, I think I might try and get a lesson or two.
  22. I wait tables to make a living, but I'm a musician at heart.
  23. Hey, new to the forum and REALLY new to golf. I honestly don't think many people expected to see the Blackhawks and the Flyers in the finals. Even though I'm a HUGE Red Wings fan... I'm happy that the Blackhawks won it all.
  24. Well if there was anything lower on the totem pole than a beginner... that would be me. I'm going to play golf for the second time in my life tomorrow morning. So today I took my really old used clubs out to a local park and tried hitting some balls. So my best shot, since a LOT of them went about 20 feet, went... well I'm pretty sure it was over 100 yards ( I want to say that it was 150 yards) with an 8 iron... not sure if that's good... but it sure looked pretty
