"5 Minutes Daily" Practice Challenge
MrLeek replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Day 25: Jul 7 Played 14 holes (slightly pressed for time); two drives off the tee, pick the better option and played from there. Promptly played bogey golf…and I couldn’t buy a putt (I must have run 6-7 putts within a holes width of the hole). I was aiming to prove to myself that I can do what I think I can do: quite often both drives were playable, or the first drive was the better option. Need to work on better execution of 75-125 yd shots; sometimes caused by poor shot selection.- 16,959 replies

Day 24: Jul 6 Range session, some good some bad (but generally acceptable). The feel of making a complete turn and trying to keep the club behind me seems to be creating a better clubpath, resulting in some very good shots. Some of my shots seem to have me chopping down on the ball a little too heavily - least I think that’s what happening. Little evidence of my bad miss (weak slice); been working on keeping the club square during backswing which I think is contributing to that.- 16,959 replies

Day 23: Jul 5 Lesson went well. I can create a neutral clubpath if I focus on it…but it’s a little more sub-conscious now. Plus it’s not terrible when I just swing the club. It’s continuing to trend the right direction. Drills I’ve been doin were correct (good), just gotta “keep on keepin on” as they say.- 16,959 replies

Day 22: Jul 4 Was originally planning to play 18 holes, but still not quite shaken the cold I’ve been struggling with. So plan B: more indoor backswing drills & putting on a matt. Lesson tomorrow to make sure what I’ve been doing is correct (god I hope so!).- 16,959 replies

On the side is completely fine. As that person goes further in front, there’s an increased risk to them…but they know the risk so it should never get too crazy. Plus it’s an extra pair of eyes for a blind shot (for instance). Lots of good reasons why it can be ok. But my worst example is having a playing partner standing 60yds in front on the direct line of the shot you want to play. Ok, it’s a 150yd shot. The ball should be way over your head….but you really think that standing there is a good choice? Really?? 😆

My absolute pet peeve is playing partners wandering off ahead, finding themselves in the way of my shot whilst maintaining that they’re in an ok place. No, you’re really not. It doesn’t happen often….but when it does… 😡

Day 19: Jul 1 Continued with plenty of backswing/transition drills. Also spent time thinking about my pre-shot routine; I’ve had the idea of incorporating the first stage of my backswing as part of that routine to encourage setting the wrists early. Part of what I’ve been doing is inadvertently what Annika and Padrig do for their preshot routines. So this is about creating a consistent approach (which I recognise is an organic process and not a mechanical one); my terrible golf shots typically have a poor preshot routine. If that wasn’t enough…Add a couple of 30 min indoor putting sessions (on a mat) for good measure.- 16,959 replies

Day 18: Jun 30 Yet more backswing drills, combined with transition into downswing. A good feel seems to be keeping my right shoulder behind me as long as possible. I think it’s all having a positive impact.- 16,959 replies

Day 14: Jun 25 Played 18 holes. Was shaping up to be a good round (-3 nett after 10) then blew up my card on 11. Still played some good golf coming home, but the damage was done. But plenty of positives to build on. Lesson learned: if I don’t have a clear picture of the shot…I don’t have the shot. Especially for a seemingly “safe” shot. What’s my goal? Where am I going to be playing the next shot from? If I don’t know that, I’m not ready.- 16,959 replies

Day 13: Jun 24 Range practice, working on improved backswing positioning. Results generally positive; a more controlled fade shape with driver/3-wood. Felt like there was less “cut” going on. There’s still some poorer shots, but that’s why we practice. Since then it’s been more takeaway drills (will be doing more later in the day).- 16,959 replies

Day 12: Jun 23 Takeaway/backswing drill swings. Lots of practice swings, setting the club correctly at the top of the back swing. So many in fact I’ve long lost count…- 16,959 replies

Day 11: Jun 22 Golf lesson followed by drills. I’m continuing to develop a more neutral clubpath with longer clubs and demonstrating better clubface control (both good). But worked to get a better set of ‘checkpoints” during my swing: club parallel to ground; right palm parallel to ground at the top of the swing; what feels like a forearm rotation through impact (I need to check my understanding on this). All this means better control of the club - I could use a neutral grip with a 3-wood and still close the clubface.- 16,959 replies

Day 9: Jun 20 Played a round of golf, some good and some bad. Made sensible decisions to minimise the damage as much as possible. I have to trust what I’m doing, swing smoothly and not get into an “OMG, just smack the ball” destructive loop.- 16,959 replies

Day 8: Jun 18 Practice day at the range, continuing to try and develop/maintain a good swing path. As before it’s gets away from me with driver & 3-wood, but it remains playable. Rest is in good shape; a controlled fade with a 4-hybrid upwards is adding more confidence in my game. The “bad miss” with my driver is either losing control of the clubface (leaving it too open) or maybe it’s down to the impact spot on my driver being near the heel. I’ve said this before…but I need to understand what’s happening. That means a solo trackman session or two.- 16,959 replies

Day 7: Jun 17 Played in the monthly medal (first time for everything). Shot +2 nett…and when I unfortunately remember how I had to write down a 10 for a par 5, I realise just how good a round of golf i put together from the back tees (where I’ve never played before). Played smart golf (mostly), made good decisions (mostly!) and rode my luck a little bit. But made plenty of good shots. Things to work on: make sure I’m aligned correctly for shots and focus on accuracy.- 16,959 replies

Day 6: Jun 16 Played 18 holes at home course. Some decent golf played, hampered by a number of bad lies (some caused by me, but others were just how things ended up after a sensible shot). Then started to flag during the last few holes and my form eroded away somewhat. Lessons learned: preserve my energy levels (so bring some food with me, no matter how friendly the game is). Also, really think about the shot when I’m in a sticky lie; don’t force a solution or try to do too much. As I play more I’ll better understand what I can really do in certain situations.- 16,959 replies

Day 5: Jun 15 Short game lesson, looking at ensuring I have the correct technique for a standard chip (also spent time discussing and experimenting with different shot types; what’s good, what’s not, what to consider, etc). Then switched to putting: a more relaxed stance needed, square my shoulders, allow my right shoulder to drop. Feels quite different but I can see the logic in what my coach is doing - it seems to be creating a more consistent roll. But enough typing: time to go practise this new method on my putting mat!- 16,959 replies

Day 3: Jun 13 Played 18 holes and plenty of positives to take out from it but some mental errors cost me. It’s completely clear to me now that my next performance leap is going to come from playing as much as possible - making the right decisions, making sure I’m aligned correctly and so on. The more golf scenarios I’m exposed to, the greater the chance that I recognise similar scenarios in the future and know what to do…and what not to do. Granted there are course-specifics that come into this. But I have a fundamentally functional golf swing. What I need to learn now is how to play golf.- 16,959 replies
