  1. Day 11: 5 Apr Played 18 holes at home course. Was a struggle - weather didn’t help, but never really got into a groove. Yet, when I added it up at the end I still played somewhere near handicap, helped by my short game. Trust my golf swing, especially off the tee, and I’ll do ok. More drills planned for later: keep working the feel post-impact to help fix my early release.
  2. Day 10: 4 Apr Played 18 holes (first round for 2 month) and went really well (almost a new PB on my home course). Things to work on: be completely 100% sold on the shot I’m going to play before playing it. If in doubt, back off and reassess. Whenever I was unsettled and unsure, I hit a bad shot (I got away with some of them). Also need better touch around the greens, but more playing and short game practice will help. Also had a lesson later today. Club path consistently neutral (awesome!). The new drill is having a positive impact. Also chatted about mental approach (see above).
  3. Day 9: 3 Apr More indoor drills, working on keeping the club in front of me post “impact” as I rotate through. The feel makes sense and my divot mat really shows the in-to-out path that’s going on. So…so far, so good?
  4. Day 7: 1 Apr Just a few mins of takeaway drills as busy with other stuff Day 8: 2 Apr Golf lesson plus personal range practice. I’m clearly bringing the club from the inside - the video prove it - and that’s a good thing, but the early release is the issue now. It’s been an issue for a while, but coach has been trying different feels to help me understand what I’m trying to do. Today one clicked; the club is rotating back inside too quickly post impact, so my feel is to keep my hands square in the middle of my body as I rotate through. I also need to keep track of what’s a good/bad shot on the range. It can be too easy to get disheartened by “poor” shots if I set unrealistic measures of success.
  5. Day 6: 31 Mar Continued with takeaway drills, working on putting the club in the right place at the top of the backswing with no unwanted wrist flex to keep the face square. Also started my 20-30min flexibility/conditioning programme which I intend to do at least every other day.
  6. Day 5: 30 Mar Repeat of yesterday - plenty of takeaway drills to try and make a deep turn part of my normal game. Added ~20mins of indoor putting practice to finish.
  7. Day 4: 29 Mar more drills practicing my takeaway and transition. I’ve caught myself sometimes adding an overcock at the top of the backswing, but it’s translating into me bowing my wrist. That’s creating an open clubface. Something to work on for sure.
  8. Day 3: 28 Mar Range session today. Really striking my irons well, focusing on translating the drills/feels I’m practicing at home into hitting golf balls. Need to fine-tune my club head control so that I end up with a a consistent shot shape - it’s either a fade or a slight pull currently. It’s a nice problem to have I think. Also more work with 3 wood from the mat (no tee). I think I’ve largely removed the high-handicapper “duff shots” now, but I need to completely trust my backswing and make a full turn, then swing with confidence. Trust what I’m doing.
  9. Day 3: 27 March Essentially a repeat of yesterday; plenty of takeaway practice, really trying to groove my backswing and make a complete turn. This is promoting a better club path. Range session tomorrow.
  10. Day 2: 26 Mar Decent session of drills practicing my takeaway, completing the backswing, then transitioning down into an impact bag under control. Trying to continue to groove the right feels to make this swing change work more persistent.
  11. Quite a fascinating read. The last few weeks I’ve been working on having a more “deliberate” backswing - the idea being that I want to try and get the club in (what feels for me to be) a better position behind me. If the club is correctly positioned at the top of the backswing then it seems to promote a better movement of the club at the start of my downswing. In drills I achieve a good position where I’m not overswinging the club. But in practice I’m still taking the club further back than I should do. Reading this has got me wondering if I’m accelerating slightly later in the backswing and losing a little bit of control, which is contributing to my issue.

  13. (Technically I’m on a streak since I’ve been doing this challenge for a few weeks at least. But, since I’ve not been recording it…) Day 1: 25 March Had golf lesson, followed by personal range time. Really pleased to see my club path with mid-iron down where we want it to be (after 30 shots the worst was -3.3). Continuing to work on dropping my hands in the backswing to create a better club path - club head speed is decent, but that’ll come with time and practice. Ball strike sound so much crisper. Also did plenty of 3-wood practice (driver is a work-in-progress!). Ball flight is a lot better but can still leak out right if I’m not careful. But given that 6 months ago I was petrified of anything longer than a 5-wood it’s still really good progress.
  14. With time on my hands after being widowed (after years of being a carer) I’ve got time to enjoy(?) this beautiful frustrating game! I don’t recommend my method of getting here, but it’s been wonderful for my MH. Picked up an old (like near-20 year old) set of clubs plus bag for £30, hit a bunch of balls on the range a few times and decided it was a thing I could get into. Been putting in the work since with a great teacher over the last year or so. Switched out the Magreggor irons for Taylor Made stealth irons middle of last year (which I love) and he recently did me a really good deal on a new (well, unused) 3-wood. Take away the high-handicapper duff shots and it’s proving to be a rather savvy purchase. Right now I’m working on trying to flatten my swing path - I’m a *lot* less over-the-top than I was, but plenty of work to do. Anyways….though I’d say hello
