  1. I am of the school of thought that the majority of ams play way too stiff for.their game. I hit a 7 iron about 165 to 170 yards and I play regular in irons and driver. I do however play a genuine aftermarket shaft in the driver so in all likelihood it would be at least a stiff in off the rack drivers. I also like heavier lower torque shafts in driver. Like most guys at my ss I can play either stiff or regular in my irons but I prefer regular for a couple of reasons. On a good swing there is no difference, stiff will feel and perform just like regular with maybe a slightly more piercing flight. But I'm a single digit cap and can't stripe every shot, and find that regular shafts are less punishing in terms of feel and distance loss. For tour players who flush every shot they can afford to play stiffer to get the lower flight, but for ams stiff does more harm than good. I also find that with long irons you need the extra height regular provides, stiff fly too low and roll out too much on the green. In shorter irons I find very little difference between the two but in the 3/4/5 regular are much better. Even in my 20s and 30s when I could play stiff comfortably I still always had regular in my long irons and stiff in shorter irons. I think the best advice I can give is to leave your ego at the door when getting fit for clubs. Clubfitters wil do their best to get you into the right specs, but they often have a hard time trying to convince guys who see regular shafts as an insult to their manhood. I would put money down that nearly any golfer with a cap higher than about 5 would benefit from going softer in their irons if they play stiff now.
  2. Nope, wrong. You are definitely a fanboy. The "I'm not a fanboy" line gave it away as much as your bag.
  3. Putters are definitely one club top ams don't change much. Putting is a fine motor skill that relies on touch and confidence. Once a good player finds a putter they trust they stick with it. This is especially the case for good putters. The best am putter I've ever seen has been playing an old Slazenger Nicklaus anser style putter the entire time I've known him.
  4. Sounds like you were thorough. I have a stiff shaft in driver but play regular iron shafts cause I can be a bit smoother with them and I like more height as I'm a low ball hitter. You must have a consistent swing to get better results with S300s, I've always found them to be a difficult shaft to get consistent results with.
  5. Poulter wasn't being arrogant when he made this comment. Totally delusional maybe, but not arrogant. To be truly arrogant there needs to be a shred of truth in your boasts.
  6. Agree. The easiest way to deal with d bags trying to move before you hit is just back away and go through your pre shot routine all over again. Do that a few times and they will get the message.
  7. Nickel, Did you actually go out on the course and compare shafts or just rely on trackman? Reason I ask is cause personally I find it hard to believe you would play better with S300s than R300s. I'm firmly in the school of thought that most ams play shafts that are too stiff, especially in their irons. S300s are much more demanding than R300s, why make the game harder? I'd bet that in real life on the course you would not notice this perceived higher bal flight of R300s, but you would sure appreciate the extra distance and forgiveness.
  8. As long as Reeds clubs back up his mouth, I don't care what he says. If any tour player says he can whupp evryone else out there, then goes out and does it, more power to them. Personally I think the game could use a bit of trash talk leading into a tournament, as long as there is class and humility post tournament.
  9. I can confirm that at least one top am uses a Titleist 905T driver ;-)
  10. Most ams are heavily influenced by marketing, particularly by what tour players use. In theory this sounds sensible but in reality endorsement deals mean tour players are being manipulated by OEMs into playing their latest push and may not necessarily be playing what they would be playing if it were their choice. I think the smart ams are playing clubs that fit their game.
  11. My math has it a bit over $400 but I get your point. I would go for the cheaper clubs every day of the week but I'm a tight wad who has never shelled out for a new model anything. I always wait for the runout price.
  12. I wouldn't worry too much about the height, as long as it isn't ballooning the higjer the better imo. Most ams hear pros talking about getting their flight down in the lower irons and think hitting it high is a bad thing, but what they don't realise is that keeping it down for a tour pro is still a towering shot with more height than ams get. Those guys hit it so hard and so sweet they can afford to take off a bit of height to gain more control, but most ams need more height to get more distance. I certainly would like a bit more height on my irons and I'm a decent ball striker and longish hitter. For guys who struggle with distance height is your friend as long you are hitting it solid and not cutting across and ballooning it. If I were you I'd try the 105s just to settle your mind, but you will probably not notice any difference in flight between the two. I think you have made a great choice with the AP1s, they are a super solid feeling club but still have plenty of forgiveness. IMO they are a better club than the AP2.
  13. I totally get disparaging remarks to slow players as they are the bane of the game, but from my experience sloe play doesn't discriminate. Some of the slowest @#$ s I've see on the course have been low markers who watch too many tournaments in tv and mimic the tour guys stalking putts from every angle before hitting the damn ball.
  14. Nothing wrong with being confident and letting people know it. Being arrogant would be coming out and saying other guys can't play or something like that and as far as I've read he hasn't done that.
