I am going to have a couple of clubs built to my standard (2" over and 2 deg up lie, stiff steel shafts, jumbo grips) from different sets so that I can play them for a while and see which I like best.

This is because it is impossible to get "2 over 2 up" demo clubs in Singapore. It's difficult even in the USA. So I usually get one club made and play with it for a month before I get a whole set made up.

In the past I used a 6 iron, but maybe this is the wrong approach. The 6 iron is not a "scoring iron" and since the 3 or 4 irons are harder to hit cleanly (for me and many others), maybe I should be looking at using 8 irons or 4 irons as my demo club.

Any opinions? Remember: just one club in a set is the parameter here.

Thanks.

I components! Currently playing Alpha and Nakashima.

I choose the 6 iron because everyone hits the 7 and lower fairly well.

The 6 iron give plenty of distance and it can also loose a lot of control if it is being hit really badly. If you can hit the 6 pretty god with a new set of clubs, then you should take a clase look at buying them.

I like the 8 iron. Albeit it is easier and more forgiving to hit than a six iron, but I like to play to a distance where I am hitting about an 8 iron (or less) to the green. It lets me know what type of trajectory and spin I will be able to get out of a set. It may be just me, but I think the short irons are the meat and potatoes of a set of irons, and I would like to know how they perform.

7-iron has always been that one specific club to tell the story of the whole set for me. But 6-iron should do too.

345-67-89P ---> 6 and 7 irons are the median. So you can't go wrong with one or the other.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
