I'm a high handicapper who is trying to get better.

I had a set of Callaway Big Bertha 04 irons and I hit them well.

Some shots were effortless, straight and far....for me.

I decided to get the Mizuno MX1000 irons and things have changed.

After 2 trips to the driving range, I do not hit these nearly as good.

I do get some good shots but much more slicing and no consistency.

Most importantly I get a lot of uncomfortable vibration in the shaft on most shots.

When I hit the sweet spot it is nice and I do get distance but it is rare.

Is this because its a less forgiving club and I'm not striking it properly?

Does this mean these clubs are not for me or is it a matter of learning to hit the ball properly?

Any thoughts on the best way to proceed?

I want to love my Mizunos but the vibration makes hitting the ball like going to the dentist.

thanks

I'm puzzled as to why you didn't stick with those irons (?).

Mizuno MX1000's irons are in the "Super-Game Improvement " category.  Pig ugly and over-chunky in my opinion, but they are 5 star rated in all reviews for feel, playability and distance.

It might be that your just not used to them yet, or you could go back to the Callaway set ?

Lizzyboy,

Did you get a chance to demo the MX-1000 before you purchased them? If so, did you hit them well then? Some people have trouble mentally playing a big headed iron like the MX-1000. I hit them at a demo days and I was surprised at just how well I hit them, BUT,.... they were just butt ugly to me. If you were looking for a set of Mizunos,... I bet you would have liked the JPX-800 irons since they would have been more like the big berthas that you had played, but with newer technology with a hotter face and more forgiveness. I think the MX-1000 had two negative things working against them: #1 they were ugly and #2 they were pretty expensive, but they are a pretty forgiving iron. If you have your old big berthas,... I would suggest that you see how you still hit them. I would probably say your problem is more likely a swing flaw as opposed to being the MX-1000. Good luck,.........

Thanks for the input.

I did hit them before I bought and I hit them well.

Maybe i should have hit for a longer period of time.

I did hit the jpx800 today and you are right, those felt very good.

I will hit them again before I change anything.

I also hit the mx1000 at the range and at the store.

I'm hitting them much better but the 800's were really sweet.

Surprising since Mizuno says the mx1000's are more forgiving.

I also heard the jpx800's are very close to the mx300.

I don't think the Mizunos look any chunkier than the Big Berthas do.  I do agree there is always a learning curve with new sticks, and it might just be that you need more time & practice.

I would be curious what shafts you have on the Mizzy's vs the Big Berthas.  If you've gone with too stiff a shaft you'd probably hit more slices.  If your old Big Berthas had graphite shafts and the Mizzy's have steel, that too could affect both your ballflight (as most steel shafts are heavier so your clubhead speed might be reduced), and certainly the feel, especially on mishits.

Driver: Cleveland Classic 270, 10.5*
Fairway Woods: Adams Speedline LP (3 & 5)
Hybrids: Wilson Staff Fybrids 21*, 24*, UST V2 stiff
Irons: Callaway X-20 Tour, 5-PW, Rifle Project-X (flighted) 6.0
Wedges: Cleveland CG15 DSG 52* & 58* +/- 56* Niblick

Putter: Yes! Amy

Both the 1000's and Bertha's have steel shafts.

Interestingly, I liked and hit the graphite shafts better than the steel shafts today on the 800's.

I have regular flex on all clubs.

I hit for 1 1/2 hours today at the store and tried all combinations of 1000's and 800's.

I think you are right, for whatever reason, I needed to adjust to the 1000's as I hit them much better now.

I got an extra 10 yards, on average, hitting the mizuno 6 iron compared to callaway Diablos.

I was hitting the mizunos 800 much better.

    • Yeah, uhhh… keep them dry? Because, yeah, the chrome is partly to help them not rust. You could have them re-plated, though you'd have to check on the legality. You could have them refinished by a company like this: https://www.theironfactory.com (they have closed, but there are still some other companies like them). Or, use them until they rust out a bit too much, and buy a new set.
    • Good, sensical post. Kudos.
    • On further reflection, I take back my "stupid" comment. It does make sense when put in context that the rule is to prevent any external attachments to the face of the club. Any change to that rule to allow exceptions would complicate the rule unnecessarily when it is easy enough to remove the stickers, etc.  I was surprised with her coaches advice and I've told her to just remove them before any competitions.
    • Hey guys so I sanded the top.of my irons I'm worried about rust I dint know that they had a finish any helpful tips would be much appreciated
    • High school golf coaches are often not really knowledgeable about the rules, I have an issue when a coach tells a player NOT to follow A specific rule.  As for the "stupidity" of this particular rule, I can't see a way to allow SOME stuff on the club face without allowing everything on the clubface.
