I just traded out my cg15 for a vokey 60 and I am 100% glad I did. Great spin and feel with this club.

I literally JUST bought a Ping Karsten 1959 Zing putter. I used my last putter for the last 15 years or so and I hope this one has the same longevity! Coop

I guess I should have added this but today I took a mulligan because I could buy one (no evcuse) AND several ground under repairs saved about 3 OB's.

So I have noticed over my last three rounds that I am progresively getting worse. What started with a hook with my driver has since turned into crummy contact with my irons from the fairway and a loss in direction on approach shots. My scores have been 86, 89 and 90 respectively. I know not to ask "What is wrong with my swing?" but seriously, does this happen to others? Have I changed some fundamental technique that I am not realizing? I understand why this game is called golf (and not other 4 letter words) but seriously, how can things change this badly this quickly? Coop :~(

What kind of Pitching wedge do you use?
coopster replied to FryemanTX's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I play with the PW that came with my mp57's and I freaking love it! -
Hey guys, I hate to quote a baseball movie but "Some days you win, some days you lose, and some days... it rains." (Bull Durham) If this game were easy we would all be playing another sport (and cussing less). So take your medicine and realize that it was just one round, and round your handicap will soon forget, and keep at it. Coop

So what i'm seeing here is that everybody is talking about hitting different wedges with different strengths. What has worked the best for me is to get 1 club that I feel most comfortable with 50 yards and closer. For me it was too difficult having all of these different lofts and then having to hit them in different ways. What I do now when I am within 50 yds (with obvoius exceptions of bunkers, punch n runs and various flops and pitches) is to grab my PW and use the feel that I have gained for it to get the ball close. My 2 cents... Coop

Rain gloves ?
coopster replied to cape cod beachfront golfer's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
So I initially clicked on this post because playing golf in Bay Area often means getting wet and I was hoping to get so insight to rain golf gloves. However, after a google search I realize that you can buy golf gloves that are built to withstand rain. On another note, I played football (and baseball) in college and I can tell you that a receiver glove may be the last thing you want. The gloves have a rubbery/waxy inside that would seem to leave to some sort of death grip on a club. On the flip side, a baseball batting glove may be more what your looking for. They are primarily leather and tend to have have much more ventilation built in even though the leather is much, much thicker. Hope this provides some help. Coop -
Suggestions for the 5 wood to 3 iron gap
coopster replied to coopster's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Thank you for the great advice everyone!
I would go and get your clubs checked before buying anything. On average, you shouldn't be hitting your 3-wood as far as your driver or have a 40-yard gap between your 5-wood and 3-iron. Like B of H said, maybe this is due to shaft flex, or maybe the lofts aren't as stated. My old 10.5* R9 460 driver was actually 13* when measured by my clubmaker. If the lofts really are as stated and the shafts are consistent with your swing speed, yeah, maybe dump the 3-wood for another hybrid.
Larry - I tribute the gap in distance to the shafts of my 3 & 5 wood (x-stiff) to both the similar distance to my driver and the gap in distance to my 3 iron. I also know that on my r9 I have actually increased the loft of the driver in order to help me get it elevated so I'm sure I may lose a bit of distance because of it. I am not so worried for a club i can tee off with more so than i am looking for a club that I can hit when I am not in an ideal lie and still get some good distance. Thanks again Coop -
Suggestions for the 5 wood to 3 iron gap
coopster replied to coopster's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Mp57 3 Iron is 21* and the Adams 5 wood is 18*. I realize the gap in loft isn't very extreme but shouldn't a 21* hybrid go further than the 3 iron due to shaft length and club head? Thanks Coop -
SF Bay Area Course Rec's/ Home Course Tendencies?
coopster replied to 5nDive's topic in Golf Courses and Architecture
I play there ALL the time. They have this twilight players card where for $18 you can play 18 holes any weekday after 3:30 AND get two free beers! It is an unheard of deal for bay area golf.
I loved it, awesome place. From east coast tho, came back home eventually. Fortunately we've got great courses out here in philly/nj too. Also, there is a course at/near berkley that is pretty good muni, don't remember the name....
The course you are thinking of is Tilden. When I was doing my undergrad at Berkeley I played there a lot but it was usually an excuse to try and drink a 12 pack during the afternoon. I have played there a couple times since graduating, and not as focused on beer, and it is a pretty challenging course with lots of elevation changes. Coop -
Hi Guys, So I recently bought some Adam's insight XTD 3 & 5 woods from a co-worker and once again I have run into another club selection problem. I have found that the 3 wood goes about the same distance as my driver with lower trajectory but more roll and the 5 wood has about a 20 - 25 yard distance differential but I can hit it off the fairway easily. I am thinking of dumping the 3 wood in favor of a hybrid that can fill in my gap from the 5 wood to 3 iron which is about ~40 yds. I would also like a club that I could hit out of longer grass that it seems like I am too frequently in and struggle with hitting the 5 wood out of. Is their a particular loft/brand/design I should evaluate? Or do I need to make another trip to Golf Mart and hope the ball flight machines are accurate? Thanks Coop

I think I made the wrong iron purchase ...
coopster replied to rocky74's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I originally had some Mizuno t-void pro II's and I made up my mind that they were the reason I wasn't hitting the greens I thought I should be (definition of Indian vs arrow). Anyways, I ended up purchasing some Mizuno JPX 800's thinking they would be the cure all of my GIR problem. I quickly found out that that wasnt the case as I could hardly hit the irons and when I did they had a trajectory that resembled a hump and no real gauge of distance. It also felt incredibly awkward looking down at them before i swung and thinking i had no idea where i was going to hit them. Needless to say the 800's lasted about a week until I happened to play with my dad and he had the Mizuno mp 57s and I fell in love with them. Now I have the mp57s (purchased for $275) got a couple swing lessons ($100) and I am hitting my irons better than I have in a long time. Coop -

Just got back from Palm Springs and the clubs worked out fantastic. The 48 degree was great for approaches of 115 and under and really got some great spin on the ball. The 54* sand wedge got a bit more use than I would have liked but really popped the ball out the bunkers (which happened to be incredibly nice at La Quinta Dunes). Thanks for all of the advice everybody! -Coop

Sean - Thanks for the great advice. I just purchased 48* and 54* cg15's and I'll be taking them to palm springs this weekend! Shindig - I didn't like the looks of the JPX 800 G and S wedges so that wasn't really an option. Cheers, Coop

So after purchasing my JPX 800 4 - PW set I came the realization that the PW is more like a 9 iron and lofted at 44*. I am now looking to purchase some Cleveland wedges as I already had a cg15 60*. My question is this, do I need to purchase 3 more wedges so that I can fill in all the gaps? (i.e. a 48*, 52* and a 56*) Going from the 44* PW to a 52* Gap wedge, seems like a rather big jump. Would a 50* wedge and 56* SW make more sense? Thanks in advance for any pointers you guys may have. -Coop

anotherday - Now that you mentioned it, I have noticed that the irons make more of a 'thud' versus a 'click' sound that my Pro IIs made (when I hit them clean). I'm not 100% sure as to why the sound would be that much different other than the fact that the Pro IIs were forged and the JPX's are cast.
-
I just bought them as well! Before I bought the JPX's I was playing with a set up of Mizuno T-Zoid pro IIs and they were unforgiving to say the least. In the few rounds that I have played with them I have noticed a much higher/arced trajectory and improved distances. My only concern with them is that Mizuno got wrapped up with the new generation of "distance irons" in which the JPX irons are lofted a full club length more than what they used to be. (ie my JPX 7 iron has the same loft as my Pro IIs 6 iron) -Coop
