  1. The real estate people in the Upstate area of South Carolina and western North Carolina tell you 12 months of golf - you might be able to play some part of every week but it takes a pretty strong desire in January and February. I marked 11 months - but I usually try and take the "Flordia swing" in February. It is probably good for the body to rest a bit anyway! Paladin
  2. I just wanted to encourage you on a really good round and tell you how much I've enjoyed reading the replies. This entire thread helped me because you are where I'm trying get to! I'm a 19.5 handicap that didn't break 90 in September, albeit, I did a couple times during the summer. I can see from your numbers where I'm coming up short and the advice you received either applies to me or will at some point. This is why I like this site so much - experienced golfers willing to share. Thanks for the great topic. I'm doing OK on my fairways but greens in regulation are just killing me because of my lack of distance. I average almost 6 double bogeys a round and that is hard to overcome trying to get into the 80's. Paladin
  3. If the "inside the ropes" kind of stuff is of interest to anyone there is one book that I read this summer (and later found his blog) by Chris Lewis. He wrote a book that is so inside I wondered how he did it (?) and how he could go back and face some of these individuals after the release of the book. It shows a different side of a dozen or so top players. I mean really different. I enjoyed reading this book. The Scorecard Always Lies - by Chris Lewis. On the same theme but gentler - all the John Feinstein golf books starting with the first, A Good Walked Spoiled. His current book Tales From Q School is a great read! Puts our own golf in clear perspective (at least mine). Maybe my favorite is Open. This guy is a good writer period. His basketball books are among the classics and Season on the Brink might be the best college basketball book of this era. Fearless Golf by Dr. Gio Valiante (the guy you see on the Golf Channel a lot) is better than the Rotella books as far as I'm concerned and I own them all. Valiante offers more relevent advice and drills vs Rotella good advice. Valiante is more actionable on the golf course. Leone Rubinstein's, A Season at Dornoch made me want to buy a plane ticket. Just haven't gotten around to it get. I love that little book! Paladin
  4. I think the perfect answer would be to call your shot and play them all as needed but I can't do that and may never be able to! So, DRAW it! I think draw and I practice draw and try to "play" DRAW! I find most courses I play are set up to kill a slicer - the draw works and gains some distance. I've pretty much taken the right side of the course out of play. I'm far from 100% on this but over time I have eliminated most of the slice - which is a start. Paladin
  5. The Walker Cup website shows the Golf Channel coverage as; Saturday: 11:00am - 1:00pm EDT Sunday 4:00pm - 6:00pm EDT I remember ESPN covering this is recent past - so watch that listing as well. Paladin
  6. I believe it is always good to be flexible by course and conditions but as a general overview I'd drop that 3 iron in a heartbeat! My 5 wood is actually a "go to" club - and I see that with so many golfers these days. I wouldn't touch the wedges regardless of course or conditions. There is likely a different answer for almost everyone of us - that is what makes this sport so interesting. Paladin
  7. I'm still new to golf after years of distance running but I do have an opinion about weights - the "newer" equipment like the Precor Functional Trainer are much better for the combination of strength and flexibility. The traditional weight machines and free weights are not sport specific but the Precor machine allows you to replicate the golf motion and still do some strength work. Most new gyms or gyms that are updating equipment have these cable type machines. I used one on a road trip and came home and purchased the S 3.23 by Precor for my home workout room. I can do all the normal "stuff" I'd do on a standard machine but more important to my golf I can use that swing motion and strengthen specific golf muscles. I also agree, from recent experience, with the post that said a little bulk (I'm sure you could overdo it) does nothing to hurt flexibility. Paladin
  8. I'm not sure how long Michael Thompson was actually on the radar screen prior to the US Open but the last two picks, Fowler and Stanley have had good numbers all summer. The process is very closed door. I was equally surprised that the Virginia Tech player, Drew Weaver wasn't selected. (I think he is an alternate) He only won the British Amateur! Tough team to make wouldn't you say? A big question on Kuehne but I think he brings experience (he might be the only player with Walker Cup experience?) to the team. My pick for the MVP of the team is Jamie Lovemark - hands down. iT will be a good couple days of golf for sure. Let's hope we get some same day coverage in USA. Paladin
  9. I practice once a week on "average" for about 90 minutes or so - I'm flexible about the effort. It has been so hot in August that I've skipped it for the most part. I practice more when things are going wrong. I do focus on chipping. pitching and putting more than just hitting balls. I'm lucky in that I actually enjoy it. Paladin
  10. I like the four hole playoff with the 18th play over and over if necessary until a winner is produced for ALL four majors. (and maybe the Players (the 5th Major) I wish the Masters would change. Sudden death is fine for other events.
  11. I'm just hope we get some TV coverage in USA. I really enjoy the Walker Cup - but it doesn't seem to actually get much buzz in the golf mainstream in USA. One reason I think is that it always comes at a busy time of the year. The FedEx, Solheim and President's Cup all going on in September. We are sending a strong group to Royal County Down - potentially a great team. Colt Knost, Jamie Lovemark, Trip Kuehne will be a match for anyone. The leadership of Buddy Marucci is as good as it gets. Of course all eyes on Rory McIIroy for GB&I.; It will be good golf - lucky is anyone who can be there to watch it! Have fun.
  12. I would have to go with Tiger - that's not exactly going out on a limb of course! I think the scheduling of four back to back events does open the door for some off form performances and lets some others in. I'm not surprised that Tiger skipped Westchester nor that Els isn't playing this week. My vote ---Tiger winning two of the three remaining tournaments. I also predict some fairly major structural changes in the format by this time next year. This whole FedEx event is probably better long term - career wise for guys like Stricker or Beamer. Paladin
