  1. wow, i didn't know places give them away.. around here the courses are so stingy they wouldn't give anything away.. if it came down to it, they'd probably charge if you asked them for advice on clubs or just general course advice... but yeah, scrounging up tees on the teebox is about the only way to get anything free on the course... unless you find stray balls... but that's another story...
  2. Do you guys prefer to buy a bag full of tees (i think i've seen bags that had 50 or so) or just buy a handful at the clubhouse before a round? I prefer to buy 5 or so at the clubhouse, and if i happen to see any in the course that aren't broken, or still have a good piece of the part that goes into the ground, i'll pick them up and pocket them for later use.. I do this for several reasons. for one, i never think during the week "perhaps i need to buy a bag of tees for the weekend".. number 2, i notice that not all tee's are straight, and i prefer to hand pick mine...and number 3, in a way, it might be cheaper because the guys i golf with will leave a perfectly good tee still setup in the teebox... they always say "ahh, there's plenty of them laying around"... the last time i went out, i paid a quarter for 5 tees, broke 3 of them, and ended up with about 10 in my pocket at the end of the day! i don't know how much tees cost if you buy in bulk, but that seemed like a pretty sweet deal to me, if you add all the ones that i found on the course
  3. in my lenghtly 3 weeks of golf, i have used a tee with an iron once.. i don't like doing it just because it feels like i'm cheating in a way... not so much cheating as "finding the easy way out"... i didn't do it at first because it was in my head that people would laugh or just look down on it.. and then when i tried it that one time, i felt so awkward that i messed the shot up... what i do however, is find a nice mound of dirt/grass, possibly in between 2 divots, and use it as a natural tee... I only use an actual tee with my woods, because i haven't bought a big bag of them, and with as many broken tees that i've seen around the teeboxes, i don't want to waste any of mine (i usually buy 5 from the clubhouse at the beginning of the round, and pick up any that i find in good condition throughout the game)
  4. umm, wow... As a christian, i do to, but yeah, i don't really have a comment on that off-subject reply... so moving on!! wow, i'm really surprised that i came up with a good idea! especially since i'm only on my 3rd week of golfing! of course, i know that the BEST practice isn't really practice at all... just spend a lot of time on a golf course and learn as you go... but with my schedule about the best i can do is be a "weekend golfer"... i only have about an hour of daylight after i get home from work...
  5. hey guys, i came up with an idea the other day, and i tried it out last night; i just don't really know if its a good idea or if it will end up ruining a game... say you have problems with using your pitching wedge, more specifically, hitting from the rough onto the green... well, what i did was put a dog bowl (my original idea was to use a small bucket or something) in my back yard, and toss out some balls in random spots, and tried to pitch them into the bowl... or at least find out how close i can get... obviously its not the perfect plan, because all of the grass in my yard is rough, and if you try this on an actual green, the ball will roll off the other side... unless you can get the backspin down pat.... basically this is just target practice, and nothing more, now that i think about it..... but anyway, would this still be a good idea for game improvement? any tips on how to improve my idea?
  6. well, i had never heard of upswing either, but i googled it, and found upswinggolf.com.... and i know that i shouldn't buy a set of clubs based on what looks good with the putter... what i was trying to say, is that you wouldn't but a thousand dollar driver and use a hundred dollar iron set... but then again... apparently, my driver is cheap as crap (knight venom, but i plan on keeping it for a good while, because i can drive straight around 200 yards with it
  7. Can anyone give me a valid review on the upswing putter? one was included in a set that i paid 80 bucks for... i thought it was some off-brand deal, because ALL that was on it was "upswing golf".. but i looked online, and found out that they're worth 60 bucks... anyway, i was just wondering if upswing is actually a good company or just overpriced? Also, what set of irons would complement the putter pretty well? what i mean, is i don't want a great quality putter with some really sorry irons or a sorry driver...
  8. i forget the details of mine, but my driver is a knight, 10.5*, chipped paint, but its got a bubble shaft; the best feeling driver i've ever felt (I've only tested a few though, so that may not mean much)... 3 and 5 woods, some sort of wilson... irons, AGS widebody II, 3-pw minus the 8.... and an upswing putter this is the first set i've ever bought, and i've had them for less than a week.. paid $80 for them from a guy that i played golf with a couple of weeks ago... any opinions whatsoever on this set?
  9. yeah, that makes perfect sense! what i'm saying is that i know i have that problem... how can i train myself to stay down low?
  10. hey guys, just have a question about my skills (or lack thereof)... my ball has the habit of going far right when i take a swing... my first instinct was to turn the clubhead inward, and my brother told me not to do that, but instead to put my right hand basically on top of my left hand... ok, bad explanation.. he said i should rotate my right hand on the grip, and leave the left where it is... but that feels unnatural to me... anyway, when i was playing with another group of guys, they told me to close the face up... which was my first instinct... so who is right in this situation? the second time i was out at the course, i did it "my way" and seemed to have straighter flights (in all of my clubs)... but i was also using a totally different set of clubs from the first time... so i don't know if it was my technique or the clubs...i think i have enough power to give the ball distance, but i just want to confirm the path... also, with my new set of irons, which are standard length, how can i train myself to squat down more so i can get under the ball? everytime i hit with an iron, i hit the top of the ball, and it rolls and bounces down the fairway.. that's why i feel like i need extensions, but everyone tells me i just need to crouch down lower... but when i do that, after the backswing, i have the tendency to stand back up when i go for the swing... just because it feels unnatural and uncomfortable...
  11. I kind of have a question to add to these questions...hehe... ok, the first time i went out, to cullman municipal course in alabama, it was beautiful, no dead grass, perfect greens, everyone was friendly on the course... then, this past weekend, i went to what was supposed to be one of the nicest courses around; but it sucked... a lot of the tee's consisted of such a hard ground that you couldn't tee up... full of rocks and such... not a single bunker was a bunker anymore; all of them were filled with grass... just looked like a bunch of old, grown up craters...empty beer cans and trash all over the place (especially piled about 10 feet away from each trash can)... and after a while, all of the holes started looking the same, with the exception of 4 or 5... however, there were several holes that had a near perfect sight from the tee... looking from the top of a mountain to where you can see everything below you... incredible view, and you almost forget about how bad the condition is... another complaint i have about the last course, is the cart i was on started dying about halfway through the course, and by the time we finished the 18th hole, me and the guy i was with had to push it to the clubhouse...
  12. wow, i don't know why i gave this that subject... i had the intentions of asking what i should replace and when should i do it, but i got in a hurry and forgot about that part, because as i said, next year i plan to have a whole new set of clubs anyway
  13. hey guys, if anybody has been paying attention to all of my previous posts, then you'll know that I'm new and have only been playing for a little over a week now.. well, i finally got some clubs (supposedly knock-off callaway's, turned out to be AGS wide-body II's)... the driver is a knight with 10.5* so on and so forth, a bubble on the shaft (don't know what purpose it serves; its just a bulge close to the grip).. 2 fairway woods (3 and 5), don't remember what kind they are... AGS irons, 3-9, minus the 8... oh, AGS pitching wedge, and an upswing putter... I absolutely love the driver! its old and the paint is chipped, but it hits so smoothly, straight and far! I haven't really used the 3 and 5 woods enough to have a "review" on them, and the irons i hate! it may just be me, but they feel way too short for me... everybody says they're standard length, but they just feel a lot shorter to me, and i feel awkward stooping down to prepare for a swing... and finally the putter... what else is there to say about a putter? just like any other putter i've ever used... i do like to use the back end of it to scoop up the golfball and toss it up in the air so i can catch it though! so here's my broad plan, and hopefully you guys can help me narrow it down a bit... if i play on a regular basis for the rest of this year, i plan on buying a whole brand new set in january '08... until then, should i leave my current setup the way it is, and try to learn with what i've got? or should i have them reshafted/extended/fitted? about how much would it run me? also, upon getting my new set next year, i plan on having a few hybrids thrown into the mix... i don't really know what the purpose of a hybrid is, but i know that a lot of people hate them because they can't hit with them... but of the 2 i've tried, i like it almost better than the driver i was talking about earlier.. one final question; what affects will i have if I commense to painting my club heads? avoiding the club face of course... since my driver feels so good, but the paint is so bad on it, i was thinking about stripping it and repainting it with some color-changing paint i've got laying around here at the house....
  14. well, i'm gonna buy these, and if i play regularly until the holidays, then i'll give myself a christmas present! let's see... that's 4 months for 80 bucks, spend about 200-250 on a new set of clubs (custom fit for me of course)... then a year after that, if i'm STILL playing, upgrade again to some "top dawg" kind of stuff.. i really like the nike SQ series that i've seen on the net...
  15. I've also recently been bitten by the bug... I've had an interest for a good long while, but haven't been able to afford a set of clubs, and no one would ever invite me to go play... i guess I had a secret fixation to it... but last saturday, i finally got invited, cussed a few times, almost made the club head dig into the ground by wanting to bang it against something... watched all the balls that were given to me (probably 6 total) go into the water, and almost hit a guy from a pitch in the rough.... all in all though, it was a good game, and guess what! i'm going back tomorrow! first time out, i used a set of borrowed clubs, and tomorrow i'll have my own personal set waiting for me at the course! i'm buying them from a guy that's going with us... for a whole week now all i've been able to thnk about is golf... pretty crazy huh? or is this normal??
  16. hmm...must be called different things from different manufacturers... that site that masa posted calls them step tees... either way, i like them... the one that i used, even though it was broken, gave me a beautiful shot the first time i was out.. but i must have used the last of the good juju that was in it because a few shots later, i ended up taking a bad shot and losing it at the same time... ball went about 50 feet up, and landed about 10 feet away from me, and i never saw that tee again...lol
  17. hey guys, while on the course last weekend, i found a few tees laying on the ground (they were broken, but still served their purpose)... the bottoms were like any normal tee, but about mid-ways, they came straight out, and as it went up, curved inward, and back out to where the ball rests at... here's a VERY quick drawing using paint... (if i can get it figured out) anyway, what kind of tee is this?
  18. i would definately wear the golf flip-flops (just did a quick google search, and all i could find were "bite flip flops").. the only problem i see myself having is that i broke my foot earlier this year, and i'm still having swelling across the top, so for sandals that have a non-adjustable fit, i can't really wear them... but where i live, shoes are kind of a statement.. and you choices are pretty much flipflops and boots.... oh, and new balance cross training style tennis shoes... but back on subject, yeah, i'd try them
  19. i dip, i spit, its a natural way of a dipper's life... not on the tee's or greens... i thought about it, but since for one, they are high-traffic areas, and 2, the grass is so short that it would easily be noticeable, i changed my mind... so i always at least step off of the green or tee about a foot...
  20. Amen to that one! I also like the fellowship among golfers. Plus, that inner calm that you must find, and which can only be found playing golf...sounds weird, but that's how i feel...
  21. i used a borrowed set of clubs when i went out, and i actually liked the hybrid better than any of the others! especially on that 18th hole... it was a truly beautiful shot... the only thing i don't like about the hybrid is it felt like i was hitting a metal pole with an aluminum baseball bat...
  22. well, i can't say that i'm much better than the very first post on here.. i did the same thing the first time i went out, which was last saturday... but my brother did have a pretty terrible shot that day as well... he had a great swing, solid contact, all the good golf mumbo-jumbo that i haven't quite learned yet; but his ball went at an exact 45 degree angle to the left i have a good story for a home-made driving range though! but first, a little visual setup... i live on a low-traffic road, and my great uncle is a big golf fanatic, so we used to always go to his house to hit balls across the road (about 50 or so feet between his house and the road, and across the road is nothing big a huge open field)... ok, here's the story... i was just starting out and learning about golf, so i stepped up, took a backswing, and heard "don't hit that truck!", but i was already coming down when i realized there was a truck coming down the road... the ball miraculously went between the front tire and fenderwell, and the truck kept on going..
  23. well, i had read in a golf magazine that even a small extension would make a big difference... in posture... the article said something along the lines of golf clubs are generally made to fit people up to 5'9", and say, a 2 inch extension would be good for people up to 6'1" or something like that... I don't remember the exact wording, because i was at a doctor's office and i wanted to hurry up and get out of there... i was waiting on my mom to get a shot.. a-ha! from golf.about.com.... "The standard, off-the-shelf length for golf clubs corresponds to a male who is 5-foot-10. If you are around that size, then standard will probably work just fine. If much shorter or taller, get fitted." how much is "much" taller??
  24. hence the reason for me buying these clubs.. if i drop it as soon as i pick it up, its only 80 dollars that i lost, as opposed to what could be a few thousand?... and i can probably make that money back (as long as the clubs aren't rusty and stuff).. and maybe in a year or so, i'll know what to look for in a set of clubs.. and if i play for a year pretty steady, then i'll know for a fact that its something i can invest in; something that i will continue to play
  25. ever since I was a little kid, my family has called me Twan... and 13 is "my number" ever since middle school... I don't know why i put the 0 in there...
