  1. Punched out of the left trees on a par five to 155ish yards. Perfect 7-Iron with a small draw and nice divot. Ball mark was a couple yards from the hole and the ball stopped hole high with a 12" tap-in for birdie. Good way to finish.
  2. Thanks for the helpful reply. Not having an established handicap (and no explanation of what to do) had me stumped on the course handicap calculation. Also based on the description given for the score entry I wasn't 100% sure that the score to be entered was an adjusted gross score.
  3. 44-48-92. An 8 at the 14th and a 7 at the 17th really sunk what could have been a decent round for me. Bright spots were a 12' birdie putt on 9 and a 7-iron to tap in distance (for birdie) at the 18th. Only my second round this year. Should get better.
  4. Have decided to determine my handicap this summer and am trying to use the GHIN service at twincitiesgolf.com to do it. The service is requiring me to enter an ESC score and I don't know what that is or how to determine it. Here is the less than helpful Q & A the site gives as an explanation for determining my ESC score: What is ESC? A. All scores for handicap purposes, including tournament scores, are subject to the application of Equitable Stroke Control (ESC). This mandatory procedure reduces high hole scores for handicap purposes in order to make handicaps more representative of a player's potential ability. A handicap determined from scores to which ESC has not been applied may not be termed a Handicap Index. Course Handicap Maximum Number 9 or less Double Bogey 10-19 7 20-29 8 30-39 9 40 and above 10 Thanks in advance for any feedback.
  5. I agree about the lack of value in memberships around the twin-cities. Rounds are way down at the courses where I play yet the membership rates are still $1300 and above just like they were at the tail end of the golf boom. Doesn't quite pencil out in my mind. One thing I do is play in a Monday afternoon league. The league fee is the twilight fee so after the league 9 is over 3 or 4 of us can often tack on an extra nine. I also golf a lot in the fall. Last year Tanners Brook in Forest lake started a $20.00 rate for walking the last week of September. By taking an afternoon off here and there and getting some guys to go there on weekends I got in 7 or 8 good value rounds at a pretty good course last year before the weather turned bad.
  6. Definately not the case here in MN. Play is way down and the courses are typically only crowded at peak weekend times. In fact there are a couple courses close to my house that I simply don't play because they won't allow twilight golf until 6 PM or seldom offer discount rounds.
  7. Just gave it a quick look and appears to be a pretty good deal. About $1000 per year which is a little less than a season pass at some OK courses in the twin-cities. Also liked the arrangement someone posted on here a while back that Ryan Moore was trying in the Seattle area. I'd be all over a similar deal if it were ever available in my area.
  8. I have a general rule about what I want to spend in most situations on my golfing habit. $1 a ball and $1 a hole. I can acheive this a lot of the time by doing a couple of things. 1. Buying older generation golf balls. My current pick is the Precept Laddie 24-Ball Value Pack. 2. Walking rather than riding and playing courses that start twighlight fees at 4PM or 5PM. Admittedly I can't get this done all the time. I still by a couple dozen better balls every year and often ride & pay full greens fees when playing with friends or groups on weekends but with a family, a mortgage, retirement savings etc. etc. golf can be a big expense. Equipment expenditures aside how do some of you keep the costs in check?
  9. First golf of the year on a pretty empty course. Shot 47 (12-Over) on the front nine and because the back nine was busier and the front nine open played the front nine again and shot a 41. Too many big scores on the first nine but only one 6 (bogey on a par five) on the second trip around. No birdies all day but enough pars to feel ok about the first round of the year. Had a bad case of the lefts (and more left) with my irons and a topped shot on the first nine. Second nine was better except for a couple of trips into the left trees with the driver. Honestly putted and chipped much better than I expected after the winter lay-off.
  10. That is the purpose. I would like to see them narrow it down to a "Sweet 16" throw out the points and then do match play over the last four days. Single elimination for $10M would create some drama and eliminate the need for all the tiresome "if Webb finishes 3rd and Luke finishes 8th or worse" talk we get subjected to over the final weekend.

  12. Prodigal son. Returning to the game after a 20-year stint in purgatory where I was lucky to play 3 or 4 rounds of scramble golf a year. Rediscovering the game and all that is good about it. Got in 20+ rounds this year. Broke 90 several times after mid-summer and despite a lot of inconsistency peaked with a solid 84 a couple weeks back. Intend to double my rounds next year and hope scoring in the 80's becomes the common theme. Ultimate goal is to break 80 in the next 18-months before I turn 50.
  13. Monday. 11-28. 39 degrees but the sun was out and the wind was bearable. Temp greens were starting to appear and forecast isn't good. Likely the last round of the year. Hoping for a short winter and an early spring.
