  1. Thanks Mitch and Yakuri...the advice is much appreciated. I went and spent a bit of money on some wedges today so think I'll need to put the bag buy off till the next paycheck (and will need to manage with the staff bag till then!). Thanks again...will definitely give the stand bags a look (probably at the end of the month).
  2. Thanks, that's very informative and explains a lot. Unfortunately, I caved yesterday and went out and tried a bunch of wedges at the pro shop and ultimately bought an MIzuno MPR 12 wedge (48, 52, 56 with DG Spinners). Absolutely loved the feel and the versatility of the clubs and at $120 a club, pretty good value (comparable in pricing to most others). So it looks like my experiment/thoughts about on-line shopping for clubs without a demo has come to an end for the time being, but I may well give it a try sooner, rather than later. Thanks again for the info/feedback.
  3. I started playing at the age of 8 with a hand me down mixed bag as well (2-3 tommy Armour irons, irons/woods from my dads starter set (a brand called McGill which I had/have never heard off)...used to hate the fact that I didn't have a more flash set...but my Dad was very clear...he said, break into single figures, and we'll think about a new set f clubs. When I eventually did break into a single figure h'cap (around the age of 15), didn't get a new set, but my did did get me a TM metal fairway driver (still in my bag today)...it wasn't before I started working around the age of 25 (post law school), that I bought a set from my old coaching pro (which I still ave and will play if my game settles down again): 1. TM R580 Driver-UST 65, stiff flex 2. Hogan Director Irons 2-Eqaliser 3. Yasuda Putter (this is from my old mixed set, only putter I ave ever owned and unlikely to change it) I have a 5 wood and fairway driver from my old set In there as well as a sandwdge (the McGill lives!) Recently returned to practicing/playing regularly after a decade (hardly ever played) and bought a set of Wilson Ci9 irons- will game them till my swing is back in good shape and then go back to the blades!
  4. Sport, media and technology lawyer with experience primarily in Asia and the Middle East. Most of the time it's just dealing with a lot of paperwork, but on the odd occasion I get to work on some pretty exciting stuff (including with pro gofers and their agents (not so exciting))....pays the bills and lets me have the odd round of golf so can't really complain!
  5. Hi mvmac...thank you for the welcome and the info on the site/forum. Will definitely check it out. Cheers
  6. Thanks again. here's the link to SCOR's webiste: http://www.scorgolf.com/ As regards these clubs, I'm exteremly tempted to buy them. Everything they say about the clubs seems to make sense to me (short irons are specialised clubs, you should be fit for them, they must all be versatile (playable from all kinds of lies in all conditions) etc...)...just can't seem to pull the trigger, because there's no way to try before I buy!
  7. Thanks...as regards the shafts...that's another thing that bewilders me (from a decade ago, when there was a lot less choice)...seems like the list of shafts out there are never ending....still can't complain..just means I have more testing ahead of me...which is always a fun thing!:)
  8. Thanks for the reply. I can indeed go out and demo a bunch of wedges/clubs (and have personally always bought after trying clubs out). There are however manufacturers out there who almost exclusively distribute their clubs thorugh internet sales (SCOR being one of them). Most of these companies will send you your clubs after you've bought them and if you aren't happy with them you can return them (and get a full refund including the cost of freight)...but nevertheless its a hassel to do this. I was just wondering, why it is that companies would chose to sell this way, given that the traditional (and according to me best) way to buy clubs is to know what you are looking for techinically (lie, loft, lenght, flex, look (blad, MB, Players CB, GI, SGI) and then to go out and try as many clubs that fit that spec before finding the one that suits you best.
  9. I apologise if this came acrross as somewhat brusque...that wasn't the intention though I can see how it may be looked upon that way. I have been out of the game a long time (over a decade), and I just put the questions out there to get a feel of what people were playing and what thier thoughts were generally in respect of their drivers. Personally I have struggled with the size of the drivers these days (the great big bertha had just come out when I stopped playing) and have no idea what is considered good/bad/poor value by today's standards. Apologies again for any offence I may have caused.
  10. Hi I'm new on here but was wondering if someone could offer some help/insight. To give you some background...I started playing golf at the age of 8 (mostly hacking around-following my dad and his friends around). Then at around the age of 14, I made friends with a coaching pro and though he had retired, he was kind enough to help me sort out my game. by the time I was 16, I was shooting scores between 4-8 (best ever round is a 2). The old pro actually gifted me a set of Hogan Director blades, because I was hitting the ball really well at that stage (my first set was a set of tommy armour 845s Silver Scotts). Then I went off to college, started working, got married etc...and basically ended up playing one round of golf every couple of years. Anyway...I am 34 now and last month played a round with some friends from the office and I'm hoked again (by the time I got to the 6th hole, I was hitting my 3 wood 270 with a slight fade)....my game is, as expected inconsistent...sometimes I know I have done all of the right things in my swing and it shoots off the face with a nice divot... this of course is accompanied by tops, heavy shots and everything else in between. I have been going to the range for the past week and have been focusing on making the right swing movements. Then yesterday, I decided to see where all the work had got me and hit 50 balls at full tilt with an 8 iron. The good news was....the contact I was making on every shot was reasonably consistent (I think I only topped one shot, hit two shots heavy and thinned one...which out of 50 isn't bad). The bad news was, that despite enjoying some good ball striking, I was mostly pushing the ball with a high fade (at my best...my natural shot would be a high gentle draw... and the bad swings would result in a snap hook). Would anyone on here have any suggestions on: a. correcting the push; b. I suspect the fade is because of my grip/hands not turning over at impact but am open to suggestions; c. let me know if any of you who have decent game (meaning, you have more or less settled golf swings) have taken a very long break from the game but managed to get back to it and how you did it? p.s...I still have the Hogan's but decided to put them away till my game recovered to a point where I could play them again. I bought a set of Wilson Ci9 irons, to give me the confidence I need, though I hope to be back to my blades, sooner rather than later. Thanks in advance.
  11. Five questions: 1. What driver do you game; 2. How would you describe your level: a) beginner; b) high handicaper; c) mid handicaper; d) low handicaper; c) play the occassional scratch or better round; 2. how many times in a round do you use your driver; 3. how much did the driver cost; and 4. do you believe you are getting value for money from your driver?
  12. I'm currently in the market to get a 48 and 52 degree wedge and have been trolling the Internet for information on what's available out there. I've been very impressed by SCOR golf's system in particular (everything they seem to say seems to make sense). However there's no way to try these clubs out without actually buying them (yes I know you can return them if you don't like them but then you've got to go back to the drawing board to find something you like). For the vast majority of gofers, buying equipment (and especially short irons/wedges) is about looks, feel and the confidence they generate (yes we like to know there is tech behind the club, but we don't care about all that when we address the ball). How do you feel about buying clubs on-line without the chance to try them out first?
  13. I live in a part of the world where its exteremly hot and humid (i.e. you can break into a sweat, just standing in the sun for 5 minutes). As a result, most 18 hole courses here require you to use a cart (they don't want people collapsing out there!). I play one (maybe two) 18 hole rounds a month, practice (range+putting/chipping green) 2-3 times a week and on the rest of the weekend days, I go down to a couple of small 9 hole courses, none of which offers a cart. I currently have a staff bag, which is fine, when I have a cart, but it does me no good (and is bloody difficult to lug around) for two hours when I play 9 hole golf without a cart. Ideally, I'd like to have one bag, that I can both put on a cart (can comfortably carry 14 clubs) and that I can carry around when I need to (so not too heavy). Any suggestions?
  14. Hi Everyone...just signed up to the forum and looking forward to hearing what all of you have to say (and maybe contribute a little bit myself)! I'm based in Singapore (have been for the past year and before that I was in India for most of my life). Starting playing golf at the age of 8 and was around 4HCP by the time I was 15-16 years old. Took a major break from golf (over 10 years), going to college, getting a law degree, job, marriage etc....but I'm back to practicing regularly (hope to rebuild my game) and playing the odd round. Though the golf swing and the fundamentals haven't changed, I'm amazed by the amount of change in terms of equipment (especially) these days - back when I was shooting close to scratch (in another life), a 460 CC driver would have been called a shovel, but these days its what everyone is making and gaming (who would have thought it!). Really love the content on the site and really looking forward to catching up with everything golf! Cheers Buj
