  2. Thanks for the advice. I will try to find an instructor in my area with video to see what is really going on. The wrist c o c k release you mention brings up a good point. I have been progressively getting more and more aggressive with this on my irons which has yielded good results with them and I have started take divots on the correct spots (I think so anyways, about an inch or less after ball contact) more consistently getting more distance and higher ball flight. This may be crossing over into my driver. Should the wrist release with the driver swing be any different than with the irons?
  3. Around March I started playing after a 10 year break from the game. Since then I am now on my 3rd driver and in the market for a 4th. I was hoping to get something that will grow with me to avoid having to replace it in another 2-3 months as this is starting to become a trend. Here is the progession of what I had and why I replaced it. Driver 1: Nike SQ Dymo Str8-fit, 8.5° loft and extra stiff shaft. Came with a used club set I purchased on craigslist for $100 to get back into the game. I signed up for lessons back in March, the instuctor said this was too much club for where my game was. He suggested I trade it in on something with more loft and more flex. I hit this maybe 20 times, very few were playable shots but this was also in the first week or two that I got back into the game. I do not recall what disances were but they weren't great and I was rarely in the fairway range. Driver 2: Adams Speedline F11 draw, 10.5° and what ended up being a senior flex shaft. Traded the Nike in on this one at a pro shop for $90. The pro shop didn't have anywhere to hit the clubs before purchasing so other than "more loft, more flex" I had no idea what I was looking for. The Adams seemed like a good deal so I went with it. At the range with my swing still being quite slow this driver was a big improvement. Distance and accuracy improved. At the range I was holding around 240-250 carry and the accuracy in general was playable. After about 4-6 weeks of playing 4 times a week either on the course or at the range I noticed my swing speed increased a fair amount. I was having to pause at the top of my back swing and conciously slow my swing considerably or I would push the ball every time. A friend of mine told me that the shaft was way too flexible for me and said it would probably be better to continue to learn with something without any offset. So the shopping began for driver number 3. Driver 3: Clevelend SL 290, 10.5° and regular flex shaft. Traded the Adams in on it for about $110, new. I did have a chance to hit this a several other clubs in a similar price range before going with this one. From the start I was very happy with this. Carry increased to sometimes as much at 270 on the range and I soon hit my first 300+ drives on the course with roll and a little help from wind (not the cart path though). I have had this for about 2 months and now the same thing is starting to happen with the Cleveland that happened with the Adams. I am not having to pause quite as much at the top of my swing as I did with the Adams but I am having to lay off it quite a bit or I push it quite a bit. I borrowed a friends driver for a round that was 9.5° with a stiff shaft and the push was gone. This has lead me to again start shopping for another driver. I have not idea what my swing speed is as I do not know of any simulators in the area that could tell me. My current drives carry about 240-270 and I hit the fairway %75 of the time. Those numbers are on the course and are starting to drop now that I am having to lay off on my drives. I am wanting to get something that I won't be looking to replace again in October. I watched a video on youtube on the 4golfonline channel comparing the Taylormade R11 and R11s. He said the R11s was a good club for golfers ranging from high handicaps to scratch. I am having a hard time jumping the gun on this as it is expensive. Has anyone had any experience with this driver? What exactly is adjustable about it? Offest, loft? Are there any other drivers that anyone would recommend? I was going to go with a stiff flex, whatever driver I end up with. Without knowing my swing speed is really any penalty to getting an extra stiff just to avoid a stiff flex possibly not being enough as time goes? I was also considering a lower loft at 9.5° but this is hard to decide on since the only pro shops in the area that I know of just have nets to hit into and it's hard to tell what kind of ball flight I would get. Thanks for any help, Tyler
  4. 94, par 71 from middle tees. I was happy with it but kinda screwed myself over as I walked up to the 18th tee box. I added my score up and saw that I had a solid shot at topping 90 for the first time. I usually par 18 but not this time. Tee shot in the water, then 4th in the water again and ended up with a 9 on a par 4... I usually bogey that hole. I just started playing this season and that was the first time I kept score over a full round. That 9 on the 18th hole just shows how much of a mental game golf really is for sure. Was nice to see 90 within reach, hopefully I will hit it soon.
  5. 2004 Audi S4, manual. This is an older pic from right after I got it but it's still in the same condition.
  6. I almost always wear cargo shorts along with a collared short sleeve athletic shirt because they keep me cool on those hot days and the extra pocket are nice. I have never heard anyone complain about my shorts. Granted, I am without the means to pay an expensive membership fee at any respectable country club so I am limited to the regular pay as you play type courses. Personally, if someone approached me and told me my shorts were inappropriate golf attire and that they would not be allowed at any respectable country club I would get pretty pissed off. If my shorts make you uncomfortable, go back to your country club where they are not allowed and let me enjoy my game. As for the respect for the game comment, what about respect for your fellow human being?
  7. I have had my Ogio Ozone XX for a few months now and love it. Light, very stable, loads of features and comfortable. I also really like how the score card, pen sleeve, ball mark tool and water bottle are all easily accessible while walking with it.
  8. I just started playing on a weekly basis this season and I usually play by myself on my lunch break. Since I am not very good, I mainly focus on what I did hole by hole rather than how I actually scored which has been giving me a better grasp on how I am improving week by week. Because of this, general rules of the game and golfer etiquette haven't been an issue. This weekend I went down to the course to play a twilight round and there was a two-some that started right after me. They politely asked if I would like to join them, I explained that I was just getting into the game so if they wouldn't mind me holding them up here and there I would be happy to have the company. The said they didn't mind at all and admitted that they too weren't scratch golfers by any means so I joined up with them. Over the next few holes I had actually been playing one of my better rounds and I think I was hanging with them fairly well but I did evidently break/bend a few etiquette and game rules. A few small things came up while playing that I normally don't even think about since I don't play with other people. Things like, what the tee off order is, grounding the club in the bunker, where to drop the ball after hitting into water, etc. On a par 3 with water in front of the green I came up a little short with my 9 iron and ended up in the water. I asked the gentlemen I was with if they minded if I hit another, there wasn't a group behind us and they said sure. So I jogged back to the cart, grabbed my 8 iron and hit again after they had both taken their turns. The next shot was, for me anyways, a great shot which ended up in the rough but still still only about 10 feet from the pin. They were both on the green but a fair distance from the hole. I assumed since I wasn't on the green that I would hit first and mark my ball and then they would hit. I guess this was wrong and one of them asked "So I guess we are playing ready golf?" I didn't mean to step on any toes and had never heard this term. A few other issues came up by the end of the game and the two I played with were polite and patient with me but I would like to avoid un-knowingly breaking any rules with other players in the future. Does anyone know of an article I can read through explaining some basic rules of the game so I can be a little more prepared next time I group up with some people? I really enjoyed playing with those guys and I think I learned quite a bit from them throughout that round so I would like to group up more often from now on but I want to avoid being an inconvenience to the others if possible. Thanks in advance for any help, Tyler
  9. Thanks for the reply. I'll take them out for a round or two next week and see if they even need adjusted. I got ordered from GolfDiscount.com. http://www.golfdiscount.com/cleveland-cg16-black-pearl-irons They have an instant rebate marking them down to $424 and there is a sale they are doing right now for another 15% off. I wasn't sure if the rebate and discount would stack but they did. Also free shipping so after everything the total bill was $360.40. I hit the same irons last weekend at Dick's Sporting goods and almost bought from them for $499. Glad I waited.
  10. I had been meaning to replace my current old set of Titleist DCI Oversized+ irons and was planning on getting fitted in a month or so. Today I came across a great deal on a new set of Cleveland CG16's in the Black Pearl finish and couldn't pass it up. Since I ordered online rather than buying from a local pro shop, should I still be able to get fitted for them? Are the shaft lengths all they adjust when fitting a player for clubs?
  11. I am a structural engineer. Went to school at the Missouri University of Science and Technology, formerly named the University of Missouri - Rolla.
  12. I used to play quite a bit when I was in high school about 10 years ago and recently moved into a subdivision with a golf course so I have caught the bug again and have started to get back into the game. The few rounds I played in the past few weeks didn't go too well as I expected so I decided to take some lessons with hopes of improving enough to enjoy the game a little more. The first lesson was Saturday morning and I think it went quite well. The instructor took one look at the grips on my irons, Titleist DCI's, and immediately gave me a homework assignment to get them re-gripped before our next lesson. He also told me the driver I had in my bag was all wrong. It was a Nike SQ 8.5° with stiff flex. Right now I have what I assume to be a fairly slow swing. He said that was way too little loft and way too stiff for me and highly recommended picking up another driver. After the lesson I want to a local pro shop to irons re-gripped and see what they had in the used driver department. I ended up getting an Adams F11 10.5° Draw with regular flex which was still new. This leads to my question. What exactly is the difference in a driver with draw and without? Should this effect how I hit the driver? I had been consistently slicing the Nike driver and the salesman at the pro shop said the Adams driver with draw would help that. I am not sure if this new driver is actually right for me or not but I got what I think was a great deal on it at $80. I guess they were just trying to get rid of it with it being a model from a previous season and still unsold. I have only hit the new driver in the store and it felt good, hopefully that will translate when I get to the range this evening. Thanks in advance for any advice on this new toy, Tyler
