I recently figured this out. My body separated at the top and all of a sudden I started using the muscles on my stomach. It feels like I didn't even use these before because I am feeling the aching muscle pain. Correct me if I'm wrong but now my downswing feels like 3 stages. hips and lower body slide forward and turn shoulders turn with the torque gains from the added separation gained from this first move. hands whip the club through. I noticed a definite improvement in my distance, and a different trajectory that seemed to fly much easier through the air... I hit one 320 downhill, it must of rolled 50 yards. Before this change I would get high shots with my driver which would have no roll at all. I think I was getting a lot of spin. But now due to the correct movement my launch angle is better and the lag just happens on its own. Or so I suspect But hell my stomach muscles are aching... I reckon that if I really tone up these muscles the power generated with be epic. Anyone else had the same epiphany in separating the body at the top of the swing? Geesh I must have just been turning as one unit before LOL man sometimes we get so closed minded and think we know what someone is talking about. I must have heard separation a dozen times and just ignored it thinking that I already knew what it truly was.

Yes it Does!!!

I've figured it out at last. I just hit a 315 yard drive, 20 metre downhill but still. Didn't have enough separation, I was not creating much torque in my torso when my hips fired and left my shoulders behind.... This takes some getting, if you think you have it, be open to the possibility that you don't. Thinking about the angle of lag is obsolete, how you get real distance is this separation and trailing the arms behind, which then fire through at the last minute and even bad contacts like this go further than good contacts with not so much trailing of the arms. Thank god I have now got the distance game sorted, now time to concentrate on short game and start winning some tournaments!

separating upper body from lower body (on the downswing)

You can turn the shoulders to 100% yet the arms could be pointing upwards still. These are separate, but still connected. Concentrating on shoulder turn rather than thinking of getting the arm into position is the way. -

This is true, but also keeping arms loose and wrists loose. Don't try to hold lag or work on getting lag, the separation is the key. What happens is that after the full shoulder turn the torque or tension between the shoulders and the hips is stretched by starting the hips forward and turning them but the shoulders delay behind. You really need to get used to the sensation of separation between shoulders and hips. It feels like you are tightening a rubber band and then releasing it. Also you can lag the arms and wrists behind further, this and the maximised x factor seems to be where the power is at. -
I also have this problem with longer clubs, I can hit my 7 iron 180+ but my driver only 250 carry

Nope, for some reason I get 7 iron distance of about 180 but above that I get massive declines, driver cary is 250 max :( -
How far do you hit your clubs?
Joehuggy replied to SpringBokVol's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
My 7 iron is 180 carry. My best Driver is 250 carry. -
It's a callaway diablo 10 degress stiff shaft but I only get 240-250 carry.... But saying that I have been on a trackman and 105-107 was my swing speed. Now I have just figured out my 9iron distance to be about 145 and my 7 iron to be 165-170. Is it just me or does my driver distance seem low in comparison?

I think my swing technique looks ok so I guess I just need to work on fast twitch muscles and strengthen my muscles as well as timing and strike, although strike definately comes with timing. I think that my driver swing is always forced and looses timing because I should be getting more distance, surely -

I just played around with your rhythm concept that you gave me and it really made sense.... My problem is that when I try speed up the rhythm or timing for each muscle group gets out of sync and my contact with the ball gets worse... But I had a little insight, I feel as if, if I work on strength with flexibility it will really free me up some more so that I can start firing faster while keeping my rhythm.. -

great advise thanks, will try and let you know for sure... Although Im pretty sure you hit the nail on the head, it's all about gradually increasing speed. With shorter irons I feel like its easier but its the waiting part with driver especially, being patient I guess -
I've been Playing Golf for: On and off since I was 10, now 27 My current handicap index or average score is: single figures My typical ball flight is: draw The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: any drive which carries below 260 Videos:

Went to a Ping club test and had a go on the trackman... As I said my clubhead speed was around the 105 mark. The pro said I look like I've got the power but I'm getting in the way of my arms and trying to hit at the ball too much... Really need to stop trying to smash the ball but I'm struggling to find the correct sensation of smooth controlled swing with correct launch angle. I was apparently putting too much spin on the ball and wasn't making good contact. My carry distances were from 230 to 250 but I think with better launch angle and smoother tempo this could be more like 260 with the same clubhead speed. Does anyone know of any drills to help me avoid the trap of lashing at the ball.. I feel like my technique is good but when the ball is put in front of me my smooth tempo goes out the window.

The reason why I believe it is best to open stance on shorter swings like this is because I need to feel the tension in my left arm as I am starting the downswing with my body.. But with shorter swings you don't get the arm and torso turned enough to feel this tension... Hence open your stance and you will being to feel the tension lower in the back swing.
