For context here. What the RO asked me about when we came off was: Had the guy making the stroke stated what he was going to do? I replied yes he had told the three of us he was hitting another ball from the tee. (that is his right,) He asked me what was happening when he was asked if that was a provisional? My answer was he was at address in the process of making his stroke. The guys making the stroke was pretty pissed at the timing of the comment he felt that he had told us what he was doing. That why he took it to the RO he was also a pretty experianced player that knew the procedure for playing a provisional. What was in his head and why not play a provisional I don't know. Nor do I care thats his course managment not mine. Maybe he was pissed because the guy popped off and broke his concentration. The point was he got the RO to see that the advice affected his making of the stroke.

how does shaft flex affect ball flight?
Snowgolf replied to donkba's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
A lot of oversimplifications here: Variables Flex L,A,R,S,X Weight 50,60,70,80,90g Kick Point Low/ mid/ High Tip stiffness Soft--> Stiff Tourque 1.7deg to 3.2deg All these can be manipulated to effect launch and spin Example Aldila R.I.P. Shafts Models Alpha, Beta, Gama Weights 60g, 70g, 80g Flex R,S,X So 3 types of shaft with 3 different weights and 3 different flexes = 27 different shaft combinations Thats why a professional fitting is so critical. Generally players with over 85mph clubhead speed 135mph ball speed should launch between 12-16 deg with less than 2500rpm -
Simple if you knowingly witness a rule violation and don;t call the player on it or just "let it go' you can be DQ'd. If your a newbie player and are ignorant of the rule violation and you don't realize its a violation it's one thing. If your a 1st flight player and you watch a noob take a practice swing in a trap and hit sand and don't call him on it you can be DQ'd for waiving the rules.

Four putt, For an "honorable" person you dancing on the line here. First you called my honor into question now your calling me a liar. Easy to be so bold sitting behind a keyboard little different when your face to face with the man. We have a term for people like that where I come from. I suggest you check your honorable self and keep it civil. I know what I witnessed and I know what I was asked by the officials and I know what the decision was. He stated as is his right he was hitting another shot. He addressed the ball then the guy pooped off about hitting a provisional. it took the guy out of his shot routine. The claim was made that the advice was unwanted and unsolicited and intefered with his playing of that shot. You don't wait till a guy is at address to ask him if he is playing a provisional. When the guys says "I'm hiting another" thats when you ask.

@Luu5 It's not being uptight it's the rules period. If it's a casual round do what you want. I play practice rounds at times where I play 2 balls and hit shots from different places to work on my game. I also don't post that round. (and no i'm not holding up play) But in a competitive round ( Tournament, Match Play, or Money game) you have to follow the rules as they are written. The rule book is a must read before playing any type of competitive round. Many of the rules in there exist to help the golfer. Case in point the unplayable ball rule. I can't think of how many times i have seen 3rd and 4th flight players get DQ'd because they didn't read the rule sheet handed out at every tournament or took an illegal drop or were conceding puts in stroke play. I had one guy straight up ask me as I was at address what club I was hitting on a par 3.Yea I called him on it. FYI do you know what the penalty is if you witness a rule violation and knowingly don't call it in a tournament. Hint Rule 1-3 The "sure is windy" or "should have hit a 5 iron" comments have been adressed in the decisions section of the USGA rules. 8-1/8 Comment About Club Selection After Stroke Q. After playing a stroke, a player says: "I should have used a 5iron." Was the player in breach of Rule 8-1 ? A. If the statement was made casually, there was no breach. If the statement was made to another player who had a shot to play from about the same position, there was a breach. 8-1/9 Misleading Statement About Club Selection Q. A made a statement regarding his club selection which was purposely misleading and was obviously intended to be overheard by B, who had a similar shot. What is the ruling? A. A was in breach of Rule 8-1 and lost the hole in match play or incurred a two-stroke penalty in stroke play.

You guys are missing key parts to the rule. A player teeing up in front of the markers or more than 2 clubs behind would be in breach of the rule if they did play that shot. Stopping him from doing so would not be giving advice. A player saying 'I'm going to hit another " has not breached any rule nor would a rule be broken if the player waits till everyone else has hit and silently spikes up another ball and hits it. The only time the rule would be broken would be when he/she finds the first one and wants to play that ball. Likewise if the player hit a provisional not being "virtually" certain that his ball was lost in a hazard then finds that ball in the hazard. He/she must abandon the provisional and take the proper steps based on the type of hazard. So when your opponent says "I'm hitting another" they have not and are not about to violate any rules. And in fact have stated their intention as to how they are going to procede. When he/she plays the shot the ball is in play. If they have stated their intent to play another ball and as he is in the process of setting up or addressing the ball and you ask " Is that a provisional" and it causes him to stop or have to begin his set up again you have breached the information rule at that moment since you altered their process of hitting the shot. I have seen this happen at a tournament. The player on the tee turned around and said " No I'm replaying my shot thanks for the advice that will cost you 2 strokes" The player on the tee claimed that the comment caused him to stop his process and restart when he was aware of his rights and had breached no rule. The rules official upheld the penalty. If I see a fellow competitor about to break a rule I will say something to prevent the penalty if possible. But only if a rule is about to be broken. Other wise I was trained to keep my mouth shut on the course. Joekelly is right most of the better players I know prefer that you not advise them of rules or anything else golf related on the course. Nor do we want to hear how your changing your swing, grip, or clubs keep it to yourself. In competitive play if you have a situation you call your marker over and discuss how you are going to procede. If need be you both pull out the rule book and figure it out. In an extreme case you play 2 balls in note the scores down and check with the rules official before signing your card. I have seen more mid/high handicap players get hit with 2 strokes for the advice rule because they just couldn't keep their mouth shut.

I find it funny that the kids with the RC were looking to get a reaction from the golfers by messing with their golf game. Notice how the RC was manouvered to move the ball on the green. Well they got a reaction just not the one they wanted. Most of us learned early in life not to mess with strangers.

Same goes for playing the ball down at all times. That means out of footprints in traps divots in the fairway and any other crap lie you get. If you do it every round it's second nature in a tourney.

Asking him what he is going to to could be considered a breach of the iadvice rule 8.1. Since a young age I was taught to keep my mouth shut until after a player hits. I have seen guys open their mouths before a player hit and get hit with the two stroke penalty for advising them on how to play. It's the responsability of each player to know the rules. If it's a casual round I don't care if you want to hit a mulligan or breakfast ball or what ever you call it. The minute you want to play for money you better know and play by the rules. Knowing the rules and following the correct procedures is what being a "honorable " player is about. Rule 27-2 provisional ball is very specific regarding the procedures for playing a provisional ball. FYI this was the guy who wanted to play for money and then wanted to have a mulligan on the first hole of the match. Both my partner and I told him no mulligans but he was free to hit a third shot. If anything his partner who could give him advice should have asked if it was a Provisional.

Going back to the OP. The moment he stated that he wasn't hitting a provisional everything is moot. As soon as he hits from the tee that ball is in play and he is lying 3. We had this happen recently in a money game. on of our opponents hit and it looked like it went through the fairway and into the garbage. He then stated "I'm going to hit another" he never said the word "provisional" or identified either ball. When we all got into the area where the balls were we found both. he then stated "oh thats my first one i'm playing it." My reply was "No your not. You never declared a provisional ball so your playing the second one and your lying 3".

General rules and etiquette for a for a beginner
Snowgolf replied to Sighbot's topic in Rules of Golf
One of the biggest things in the game is to play the course as you find it and leave the course better than you find it. Have someone show you the right way to fix a ball mark on the green. Always carry a divot tool with you (its the thing that looks like a two pronged fork). Rake All footprints in bunkers. Even if it's not important to you the group behind might be playing a match or money game. It doesn't matter if your playing at the Country club or the local Muny we are all stewards of the game. -
I guess all the guys posting on here like seeing women over 60 rocking knee length skorts and capri pant on the golf course! Every woman on BB this season is pretty damn good looking and almost everyone has worn an outfit that was not appropriate golf attire. As on course I was at not to long ago states in its dress code "skirts or shorts can be no more that 4" above the knee". Creamer, Gulbis and Wei all wear skorts more than 4"above the knee. Atractive athletic women should be able to dress in a modern fashion if they want. My girlfriend is going crazy trying to find where they sell the clothes the women on BB are wearing. All she can find in golf shops is the stuff that the old bats in the womens club wear. Golf for many years was a punchline for old white guys wearing clothes you wouldn't be caught dead in. Men have moved past that. Time to let the women have their turn it's 2012 boys not 1952.

If you hit into the group in front or get close just apologize it's easier for everyone. Better yet yell fore if you think your going to reach. We've all done it. felt the group in front is clear and then tagged one. It's more likely for a mid handicapper whos distances may not be consistant from round to round. The guy who picked up you ball was very much in the wrong. When that happens call the pro shop on your cell and let them handle it. A holes like that are bad for golf.

Hitting a power line off the tee box, what do I do?
Snowgolf replied to Timothy Voyles's topic in Rules of Golf
IIRC Ball hitting power line means stroke must be cancelled and replayed no penalty. -
Titleist 910f 3 wood for a 15 Handicap?
Snowgolf replied to jrduck7's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Go online and find a Titleist fitting center and get fit. The fitting clubs in the 910 family are the same as what you will buy due to the Surefit hosel. More important you can try different shafts. The shaft powers the club. -
Anytime I play in a tournament we always identify your ball that you are hitting (make/model/number/mark) on the first tee. We also exchange score cards you never carry your own card. Also when hitting a provisional ball you need to declare it as a provisional and identify he ball before hitting. I you know that your opponent is posting a incorrect score YOU can be disqualified for allowing it and signing as his marker.

I play the ball down and play by the rules period. As a matter of course I don't rake puts or take gimmies. As far as the OB or possible lost ball I play a provisional ball after declaring it unless the local course has a lateral rule. I find it amusing how many golfers can't make a two foot put in tournament play because they never putt them in casual rounds. Same goes for playing out of divots and footprints in bunkers. As far as what other players do in a casual round I don't care as long as it doesn't affect the course. RAKE THE DAMN BUNKER AND FIX BALL MARKS! However if we are playing in a tournament or playing for money (i don't care if it's $50 or$0.50) you will follow the rules. Everyone of them, and yes I do have a copy of the current rule book in my bag. You don't want to know how fast I'll call a rules violation on you in match play.

FYI Adjusting the loft, lie, or weights in your shiny new driver after starting the round is a violation of the rules as well.
