Well, I went ahead and bought a cheap 454 I found on eBay. We'll see how it works out.

Hey all, I'm trying to decide which of these drivers to move to, as my Si3 is beyond it's usefulness. I've narrowed it down to the R5 and the Big Bertha Ti 454. Both seem to get really good reviews, so I'm asking what everyone's opinion of them is. I like to hit low-ish drives, as I tend to play on windy courses. I'll probably be getting 7.5, 8, or 8.5* loft (my Si3 is 8*). I last had my swing speed measured in 2005 and it was an average of 126 (it's definitely down from then but I'm not sure how much). I'll probably end up with an X-Stiff shaft. What do you guys think? Thanks.

Yeah it's alright. I'm more a fan of classic bluegrass from the 40s-60s though. Guys like Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, Lester Flatt, Snuffy Jenkins, Jimmy Martin, Earl Taylor, the Stanley Brothers, etc.

That's what I figured you were getting at, since I hadn't noted any other mention of German steel in any other club's promo material. Here's what I was able to find out about the so-called GSS inlay for the Scotty Cameron Studio Style Newports: According to this site (Google cache page of SC's website), the steel that is called GSS is 303SS, which corresponds to Type 303 (Type A1 for ISO3506 numbering) stainless. The SS either stands for stainless steel, or less likely, denotes that there is added sulfur in the mixture. Type 303 stainless is a derivative of Type 304 (Type A2 ISO3506) stainless (your common 18/8 stainless, or what everyone knows as stainless steel) only with the addition of sulfur and phosphorus. All 300-series stainless is austenitic chromium-nickel alloy base. The added sulfur changes the steel in these ways: - reduced ductility - reduced impact toughness - decreases corrosion resistance - decreases weldability - decreases tensile strength - decreases yield strength - adversely affects hot working - increases segregation tendency - increases machinability The added phosphorus has these effects: - reduced swelling rate - reduced creep rate - increased rupture life - can cause pearlite banding due to segregation during casting - increased intergranular embrittlement (if segregation occurs) - increase in ferrite grain coarseness Mainly all this adds up to is that the steel will be softer (due to the sulfur's lowering of impact toughness) and much more brittle (which leads to increased "feedback" and "feel" via vibrations through the club face). In short, it's nothing special and is mainly one more thing they can use to sway the minds of less informed consumers. It is not unique, for the most part. It is possible get the same effect from a polymer insert. Really all the "GSS" is good for is fancy acronyming. Whether any other manufacturer currently makes an insert putter with the same qualities as the "GSS", I cannot say.

I highly doubt that it's specifically steel from Germany that's better. More likely it is just a better grade of steel. Where did you hear/read that German steel is better? Do you have any more info on the steel other than that it is German? Manufacturer, Type, DIN number, EN Name, ASTM/AISI Type, UNS serial, finish and/or grade would help me in telling you any differences and/or advantages.

Mainly her alt-country solo stuff. NP is a little too poppy for me. If you haven't listened to her in either The Corn Sisters or Maow, check that out. TCS is kinda like fast country, pretty decent. Maow is more of an Alt Grrl Punk. Both are really good.

I've got Titleist 735.CMs, and I wouldn't give them up for the world. I demoed 18 sets of irons before I bought these. By far the best irons I've ever had.

That's the truth. I'm 6'5" and about 285 so I can give the ball a ride. When I went for my fitting when I got my 735.CMs, I had the pro laser-measure my drives to see if I needed to change anything there and I was just getting over 300. And my swing speed is in the upper 120s. I don't think I could hit it farther if my life depended on it.

Mine is definitely making my first hole in one with my dad by my side. Considering I was there three years prior when he got his first, it seemed almost poetic.

I've played Torrey Pines twice and shot 85 and 87. Those were from the back tees. I'd think if the setup got any harder than it was, I'd shoot myself. I'm used to shooting like 73s on my courses. It was a shock to the system to show me exactly how much better the pros are than I am.

Hahaha. I hear you man. I didn't get my first until 4 years ago, then I got 2 last year alone to make 4. Now I bet I won't have another the rest of my days.

I buy memberships at 4 of the 5 courses around here (one is too new and has no trees). I spend about $8700 between the 4 memeberships, but I play every day in the morning before work (can usually get 9 in) and try to get the other 9 in after work and usually 18 (or 36 if I have the time) on the weekends. Yeah, I play a lot of golf. But I wouldn't have it any other way!

13 years of golf that I've had at least one 18-hole round under par each year. I've technically already made that 14 years since I got one down in Florida on vacation, but I only count at my home courses.

From Champaign here. Man I can't believe this snow comes and goes and then keeps coming back! I just got back from 2 weeks in Florida so I cannot wait to get the grass back out so I can scratch the golf itch some more.

I have 4 myself. I was there for my father's first and he was there for mine. Doesn't get much better than that.

I'll remember them as the complete arrogant losers they are. They should have beaten the Giants. Badly. But all the wins over the years have made them soft, and it showed. Giants put on the pressure and the Patriots couldn't respond. But hey, at least I made a bunch of money on the game because all my friends were sucked into the hype.

I have all the HD channels Comcast provides, as well as Blu-Ray capabilities through my PS3. As of this last weekend, I'm up to 6 HDTVs in my apartment. One in the bedroom, one in the living room, one in the kitchen, one on the deck, one in the bathroom and one in my roommate's room. Just can't get enough TV.
