Super hacker to decent golfer..... Who's done it?
Fromthecoast replied to Fromthecoast's topic in Golf Talk
I took my blade wedges out and went to playing my 56 degree Cleveland 588 as my only blade wedge. I only use it out of sand or maybe an occasional 1 or 2 shots per round. I use my 51 degree cavity back gap wedge that matches my set. I also moved away from teeing off with my 5 iron and forced myself to use my driver or 5 fairway. Smart recovery shots when I have a bad hit. Playing shots that I can handle and have practiced. -

Slid in under 110 today with a 108, so its getting whittled down. Last 3 weeks were 126, 117, and 108. Not sure if I will get under 100 next week but I am hopeful to improve my score. -
Taylormade Burner 2.0 Balls

Surprised there isn't more information available on these or that more people haven't tried them. I looked at the usga list of conforming golf balls and they were one of the small few that were listed as low spend off the driver and high spin off short irons. -

Definitely feeling better. Hoping to break 110 in the very near future (short term goal). Season goal is under 100. Have to play in a golf tournament with family in about a month and don't want to be the worst one there. -
Took my son out for his second round in a week. He's doing pretty well considering and I'm actually impressed with his determination. He's having fun after he gets over the fact that he's not going to hit the green with his first shot. That lasts about 3 holes before he finally calms down.

Super hacker to decent golfer..... Who's done it?

Just got back from playing. Shot a 117 which is several strokes better than what I did last week. Tried to apply my evolved lessons today and even hit my driver today. I had some really short drives hut the majority of them were in the low 200 range with a very very easy swing, but they stayed straight and I will work on the distance later. Started pitting things together better on the back 9 where I was 11 strokes better than the front even with a big blow up hole (8 on a par 3). Would have broke 50 on the back if it weren't for that. -

I tried playing many years back in my 20's but didn't really know how to swing at all. I still don't know in my 30's but I'm at a point where I want to improve and at least break 100. I think if I can commit to getting out there and playing as well as practicing I should be able to. I think that the evolvr lessons and hitting at home a little bit might put me over the hump. -

My plan is to plan at least once possibly twice a week with two range sessions and maybe hitting a few balls into a net once or twice a week at home. And I'm signed up for evolvr. Just waiting for my first analysis. -
In addition to myself, I've got my 6 year old son hooked and even my old man out on the course. My 4 year old daughter is getting interested too.

Thanks for all the responses. Definitely feels good to not have to expect to be in the 90's next week. I just signed up with Evolvr and my son is now starting to play some and he really enjoys it as well. He's only 6 and he played twice last year and once this year so far. He's been hitting a US kids 9 iron with the training grip and a US kids putter. I just got him a fairway wood for being a big boy on our last 18 holes last Saturday. Anyway, the heat is on because as the Dad, I've got to try and be a good player and set a good example. I've sent in my first video to Evolvr this afternoon after playing 9 holes shortly after work. So I'm starting a journey and seeking some help. I'd say I am officially a 125 player right now and as a goal I would like to break 100 by the end of the season/year. Having my son wanting to play is a lot of inspiration and I have set up a 10'x10' net in the backyard for us to use for hitting golf balls and baseballs. He's not doing too bad himself. Even my old man is wanting to play again, so it looks like I have two built in playing partners, although I don't mind playing alone if I have to in order to get some practice in. Played my 9 today solo and it wasn't bad. I need to get a push cart because if I a playing alone, I would rather walk. Either that or one of those Sunday bags for the little 9 hole course around the corner from work. -
Realistically trying to understand how many people have started off as a 110 or 120+ golfer to get down to a respectable round? Realistically I'm around an honest 120 and hope to break 100. I'd be satisfied to be in the 90's even long term and absolutely elated to ever sniff breaking 90. I'm looking to see how many people here have done just that. I'm working on some things and I'm expecting to see some results. I've even taken a lesson locally but I did not get much out of it. I'm planning on starting lessons through evolve soon. I may even sign up tonight. So who's made the journey from hacker to respectable and wants to share their story, key to success, or even just a few words of inspiration.

A very lightly used set of Callaway Diablo Edge R Irons. The set is 4-PW plus an "attack" wedge, also known as a "gap" wedge. Used for one round of golf and a few driving round sessions. They have been sitting in my garage for many months unused. $200 PayPal'd and shipped FedEx in the 48. SOLD

what is the best 3 iron hybrid on the market???
Fromthecoast replied to agoodmanmbk's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I just picked up two Mizuno Fli-Hi's used for $20 each on global golf and I am really liking them. I usually don't hit hybrids well and these play more like irons so I like that. -
Another player iron vs GI/SGI question
Fromthecoast replied to Fromthecoast's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Well if I hadn't hit a perfect shot with my 6 iron the other day with these I'd give them up but I am really enjoying them. I was very surprised when a pured shot with my 6 went 200 on the nose. In front of my 5 year old so he now thinks I am as good as tiger. Can't beat that. -

The 57's look similar except for the center cut out portion, but I have never seen them in person. Mizuno's definitely have a classy look to them either way, that could play into why I like them. -

MP30s do have a slight cavity back with blade like top line. Certainly not a huge cavity back but more than a blade. -
Another player iron vs GI/SGI question
Fromthecoast replied to Fromthecoast's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
The offset on my diablo edge irons causes me a lot of problems like snap hooks and pushing the ball left which is very uncommon for me with a more standard offset. The ability to not hit it perfect does help but then I still lose my trust when I put one way left and in the bushes. -
Another player iron vs GI/SGI question
Fromthecoast replied to Fromthecoast's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Generally speaking, my mishits are such that I don't think SGI's help that much. For instance, MOST of the time I mishit in a straight line, meaning fat or thin but the ball still goes straight I just end up coming over the top or digging a trench right behind the ball. Other misses are pushes to the right, where an SGI won't help either. -
But slightly different. Today I was playing with some SGI irons and while they sure do seem to offer a lot of help, when I played with my Mizuno MP-30's I didn't notice that big of a difference. Generally I have had the feeling that my mishits were bad enough that no iron was going to make them better and when I make good contacts, well then they both do about the same. One thing that I did notice, is that for the same lofts, I got more distance from the player irons. I don't think that I will see many strokes difference in a round, maybe less than 5 at worst between the two. Because of that does anyone think that I would be better served going with the mp-30's so that I can get more feedback and improve my ball striking? Right now I am hovering around 100. I know it seems kind of silly to play forged players irons at that level, but if I am not seeing that big of an improvement from game improvement irons, I think that I would be better served learning to hit the ball correctly to avoid getting sloppy (which is causing my mishits with the other clubs). Does this make sense, at least in the higher lofted clubs like 5 or 6 and down? Thoughts?

To be honest I never though about second shots with shorter irons but I did notice that I wasn't using my wedges much at all. I'm actually having a lot of fun but I'm up to try te shorter tees as long as no one sees me. In all seriousness though, my buddies will never play any closer so it will only have to be when I'm playing solo.

Looking for some input guys. Just getting back into golf. Typically a double bogey golfer but showing some glimmers of getting between bogey and double bogey. Local course has four tee selections. 7000, 6500, 5700, and 5230. I've been playing from the 6500 but I since I don't hit my driver consistently I only tee off with a 4 or 5 iron, typically 5. Should I be playing the 5700 tees right now. I'm thinking yes? At least until my driver gets consistent and my score comes down?

Seeking a new set of clubs
Fromthecoast replied to abnjim6's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
A good reference point is the Maltby Playability Factor. I do not think that it is the be-all end-all on how easy to hit a certain set of irons are, but it is a starting point. A high ranking on there generally indicates are large clubhead with a low center of gravity which are generally helpful to beginners or high handicappers. -

Wilson Di11 is less than $300 shipped on amazon right now just to name one. Nike machspeed sq are as well. Diablo edges can be had for well under $300 and they are super game improvement with lots of help for a beginner. -

What is it you are looking for? Lots of good options out there for good prices. I've been doing a lot of shopping lately and would be glad to help. Honestly though if you are new to the game and a high handicapper, some "clone" clubs from gigagolf might be the best idea. You can get a custom fit set for around $100 and will put you in a better position to learn with minimal investment. I have a set and sold my Cleveland's to keep them. I also have a set of off the shelf diablos that I haven't even unwrapped yet.
