8 over on the front (good for me) and a disastrous +17 on the back.

Lately I have been playing a draw off most every tee box. Sometimes this is turning into a big hook and landing me OB left which is something I would like to eliminate. Recently I was at Dick's hitting on the simulator because it was a rainy day and I could not get to the range. I was hitting a draw with my Cleveland Classic Custom XL 10.5 with the JDL6 Stiff Shaft but not near as much left as I was with my Cobra Amp Cell with the Prolaunch Red Stiff (also set at 10.5). I started playing with the adjusment and thought I was opening the driver. I started hitting a high cut that instantly was much more on line than my other shots although it was ballooning some and distance did drop off. I was launching anywhere from 15-18 degrees and I typically play the ball forward and hit with a positive angle of attack. When we finished I realize that instead of opening, I had actually closed the clubface -1.5* and the loft was now 11.5. I was seeing total drives at that time around 255-265 with minimal roll and the decent was definitely steep. I'm somewhat confused as I would not have thought that a closed clubface would make me cut the ball more, but those were the results that I was getting. What does that indicate about my swing path? I thought I my path was relatively down the line or just slightly in to out, but the changes I was seeing makes me think differently. Another point of reference, I was just recently custom fit to C Taper Stiff Iron Shafts by the Mizuno Swing Optimizer with positive results. My swing speed was pretty consistently 102 with some jaunts up to 105 when I was hitting the driver on the simulator at Dick's. My longest drives were with the Amp Cell at 275 or more but were all WAY left. I've also recently played with a X Hot Driver 10.5 Standard Setting with a Stiff Black Tie and still hit some hooks into the trees. Obviously I can improve on my swing but I am also curious to what I was seeing with the change to a closed face. Seemed different than what would be expected.

Super hacker to decent golfer..... Who's done it?

Knocked down another milestone today. Finally broke 90 which was a big personal goal of mine. I felt like I needed to get there to feel like a real golfer. I didn't expect that today would be the day at the turn because I was +13 on the front nine, but finished the front nine with a couple of pars. Finished up only 2 over on the back which consisted of 3 bogeys, 1 birdie, and the rest were parts. Finished up with an 87. I was thrilled especially since I was even on the back 9 after 6 holes I knew I had a good shot at getting under 90. Hopefully I can continue to confirm those numbers. This week was a week of ups and downs and honestly a week ago I was ready to quit. I was having trouble with my irons and really spent a lot of time this week working on improving my swing and closing the clubface which paid dividends today. I played my stock shot off the tee box, which was my push draw. Had some really nice drives even though I was using a new driver, getting out there to 274 on my longest that I GPS'd today. Today was one of those days that will keep you coming back. The oldest score that I have recorded on oobgolf is the end of march last year which was a 117, to an 87 today only 11 months later. 30 strokes difference even though some days it didn't feel like it. This site has been a great resource and I've found some words of wisdom and inspiration here to keep me going. -
Bought a Taylor made Jetspeed driver but am going another route. This driver is about a week old and has been hit a few times at the range. Asking $80 in the 48 states. Paypal preferred.

I hit one today at DICK'S and was pretty impressed. The weights were set to neutral but I noticed that even my mis hits turned out really nicely. I'm too high of a handicapper to even think about spending the $400 on this club but I was wondering if I could get similar performance from the SLDR or Jetspeed which are available for much less. -
Thanks all. Not knowing what to call it definitely won't keep me from using it since it has worked well for me in the past. I'm going to guess that over the last 2 or 3 times that I have played thinned or fatted pitches have cost me at least 5 strokes per round. I'm guessing it is more of a pitch and run based on what I'm seeing on these replies.

Well the year has gone by and I haven't improved on my best round of 95 but I did end up breaking 100 more times than I remember this year. My handicap is down to 26.5 and my average score is right at 100. I'm hoping that with some substantial improvement in 2015 to lower my HC to at least under 20. I think if I can do that my average score would be around a 93 or 94 (give or take) and that would be progress. I'd like to start dipping my toes into the upper 80s at least a couple of times this year. We shall see. These days I am mostly struggling with my approach shots and putting. Hitting short iron approach shots fats and wedge shots thin has been the case lately. Way too many putts to score successfully. I easily see 10 stroke lying on the course right now that could be picked up. -
Evertything goes high, right, and short

I will definitely look at some of the advice suggested above. I played this weekend and made some interesting observations. I switched back to some more SGI irons instead of the J40 dual pockets that I've been playing (probably better clubs that I should be playing but damn they are good looking) and j also purchased and wore a swing glove to rule out cupping as an issue. Even though my score did not reflect it, my iron play was overall pretty good and I only had a few shots that I was disappointed with. I left with the driver on every hole but had good contact and a ball flight that made me happy. My chipping, pitching, and putting were absolutely horrendous cause my score to go though the roof. I was somewhere around my usual expected distances with the SGI irons. I think the offset really helped me the most. I still had some fade but not nearly as much with the irons and the driver was mostly draws with a few baby fades here and there when I didn't finish my swing correctly. And it may not be that I have to roll over the forearms as much as I might need to "feel" that way. Right now I am holding off all they way through. I may not have to actually roll the forearms as much as just finish my swing properly. We did take video, but not high speed. -

Well stretching is something that I can do outside of focusing on the swing. I'm naturally more comfortable with an upright two piece or two plane swing so that's not something that feels awkward. For now I am going to focus on keeping the club face more closed on the backswing and rolling over the forearms. Those will be my two main things to work on although as you know those two things have multiple elements. -

I took a lesson yesterday from a local pro that I trust. I've got a lot of things going wrong, and I was a little upset to find that I am doing all the things that I suspected were an issue. Swinging out to in, and not getting the clubface back to square. Not squaring the clubface was do to me over rotating the club and opening it way up on the backswing but not coming through during the swing. Currently working on a combination of things: Swinging less around my body and more upright, keeping the clubface more closed in the backswing, rotating my forearms so that I quit "holding off," and realizing that I need to stretch my legs much more because it is limiting my swing. Got a lot of homework to do, but hopefully will get back on track. -

Thanks guys. I am definitely "cupping" the wrist but have a lot of trouble when I try to bow it. Any tips for how to actually incorporate it into the swing. And yeah, I do have my shots mapped out as long as I don't mind going up two clubs and aiming to the left of wherever I'm trying to go. -
Looking for a little help with a problem that I have developed over the last month or so. All my iron shots and most of my driver shots are going very high, right, and several clubs short. I am occasionally able to hit the ball straight or with a slight draw with my driver, but this is becoming less and less possible lately. Sorry I don't have any video I can upload at this time. I've hit the range several times and tried to shorten my backswing and follow through and attempt to hit some draws with absolutely no success. At most, everything goes dead straight. In fact, if I just shorten my backswing, everything is going dead straight although still very short. I am still getting a lot of trajectory on the ball. I'm not sure exactly what I am doing, but I do believe that I am not closing the clubface for one thing. I'm probably also swinging from out to in, which has been a real issue for me and difficult to correct. Any suggestions on where I should start? I'm thinking that I must have something pretty serious going on after the halfway point in my backswing. If I stop my swing and half or shorter, everything goes straight.

Callaway Razr X Forged Irons 4-AW, Rifle 5.0 Mint
Fromthecoast replied to Fromthecoast's topic in Marketplace
Ready to move these. Dropping the price to $325 shipped in the 48. Great deal on some really nice irons. -
I just recently picked up a set of Callaway Razr X Forged Irons only to come across a very good deal on the irons that I originally wanted instead. My loss your gain. All have velvet tour type grips with the exception of the 7 iron which has a midsize Lamkin Permawrap grip. If that is a deal breaker I will throw in a tour velvet grip fo you to change out. Some of the standard grips are installed logo down and some are logo up, not sure why. Project X Rifle Flighted Shafts in standard Callaway length. Irons are in excellent condition with very minimal wear.

Super hacker to decent golfer..... Who's done it?
Fromthecoast replied to Fromthecoast's topic in Golf Talk
Range sessions have been up and down. My swing is definitely off a lot from where it was. I just started experimenting with more of a two plane swing and I am having some success. Even though range sessions have been pretty poor overall, I managed to shoot a 97 today and had many chances to shoot better than that. The last three scores that I have are 95 and 97 on 18 and a 49 on 9. My handicap is now just a hair under 28, so things are going in the right direction and I guess soon I will officially be a sub 100 player (at least according to handicap). -

Just got back from a productive range session. Laid off about 4 days and it seems to have helped. Back did not hurt very much and after a few balls I started working my whole body back into the swing and things were working really well. Distance was coming back strong. I started with a big fade, and that eventually started working to very straight with maybe a minimal fade. I'm still having consistency issues, but I feel much better after today's session than I did going in. Unfortunately I won't get to play much this week, but pretty much plan to be on a boat or on a golf course over the 4th of July holiday.
