  1. I would concentrate on keeping your head still through your swing and always accelerate through impact. This has helped me a lot with my pitching and chipping. Also, as someone else pointed out, if your divot comes after you contact the ball - it is a good thing. The fat shots kill though. Good luck!
  2. Well I grew up in MN and learned the game there so my favorite course is still probably Mississippi National in Redwing. Now that I am in Tucson my favorite course is the Omni Tucson National but I doubt I will see it again until we reach 100+ again next summer and the prices drop.
  3. I usually like to have around 10-12 balls in my bag. I've been experimenting with new balls over the last two months so right now I have about 20 due to extra sleeves of the Top Flite D2 feel's that I was trying out and still like on some of the tougher desert-style courses around Tucson. Something about losing $1 ball instead of a $4 ball. Other then that it is the ProV1's.
  4. Thanks for the insight. Now that I've had several hours to process things I'm feeling very positive. The lesson really felt like information overload but now that I'm able to step back I'm really looking forward to working on these changes. The grip changes feel strange but I feel like the club is much more in my fingers - where I used to think the club was but now I have a better feel for what that really means. Here's hoping I can keep improving. Thanks
  5. Hi Folks, Had my first golf lesson in 15 years today. Was a fairly positive experience and was nice to have my swing taped to see what was going on. The pga pro who gave my lesson was very impressed with my swing mechanics, in fact he was suprised at how high my handicap was considering my swing mechanics - however, I am leaving the clubface slightly open through impact and not swinging down on the ball enough. We spent about 30 minutes working on swinging down on the ball and taking a divit after hitting the ball. It certainly was a struggle but I feel like I will gain a lot but working on this. He also commented and had me work on building a "stronger" grip which is amazingly uncomfortable but from what I understand is probably a big problem with why I can tend to leave the clubface open through impact. Now, I will continue to get lessons but at $75 a pop, it is going to be monthly instead of weekly. I'm wondering if anyone else has worked through similar problems and if they have any drills that helped them achieve their goals. All he really left me to work with was to grab a small dowel and work on getting the "swoosh" sound by bringing it outside in, and practice hitting a hook over and over again. Any suggestions? Thoughts? Thanks!
  6. I love my fiance dearly, however, the 4 1/2 hours I get on the golf course with my buddies this week would be severely soured if she decided that she wanted to come along. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with gals on the course, I just look at golf as my time, away from everything - the job and the girl. For what it is worth, I did get her out to the range once, she hated it. :)
  7. Really enjoy Harp and Smithwicks. Used to live in MN and would die to get my hands on the Summit Mai Bock that they brew in the spring... Tough to go wrong with a good Pacifico.
  8. Good luck! It sounds like you want to improve your game and are willing to work through some of your problem areas. I like the routine you set up trying to mimic an actual round of golf (or a few holes at least). Something I did a few years back when I was consistently shooting in the 105-110 range was after a round go through every hole and map out what I hit and how may putts I had. It was eye opening to see my pitching wedge (i didnt have a gap sand or lob wedge at the time) was being struck around the green 20-25 times a round (approx 22% of my shots) and i was avg around 40 (yikes, 35-40%!!) putts a round. I reevaluated my practice and decided to break up my practice time into amounts similar to the amount of strokes I was taking which meant that over 50% of my time at the range was spent chipping next to the green and putting. I came up with a little game/challenge that I wouldn't let myself leave the putting green until I could two-putt every hole (there were 12 pins on the green) It really didn't take long to drop my score into the 90's after starting up a practicing routine that forced me to work on areas that dramatically effect ones score. Good luck and have fun.
  9. I went to college (New England Conservatory of Music) for Bassoon Performance. Played with the New England Philharmonic, Boston Civic Orchestra, Hingham Symphony, Gardner Chamber Orchestra to name a few while a student. Studied with several members of the Boston Symphony and got WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY burned out. 6 hours a day alone in a practice room for 4 years was enough for me to know that it was not what I wanted to do with my life anymore. Great memories and some of my old classmates are doing quite well in major orchestra's these days but I am pretty content with my choices. Now I'm learning guitar. Just got a new taylor - love it!
  10. Played Sunday and played well, in fact best round of the year with an 84. Have a chance to break 40 on the back nine but need to finish par-par. 17 is a 180 yard par 3, pin is up and i sweet-hit a 6 iron to 10 ft... miss the putt, but a great shot for me non the less. 18 I rip a drive 280 (which is really long for me) have 105 into the pin and chunk my gap wedge. Hit my 60 degree to 12 feet and drain the put. Finish 45-39 for my first under 40 side in three years.
  11. This is a kinda fun thread... Thanks to uncle sam and a stimulus check, my last trip to the golf store landed me a Used set of Callaway x-tours 3-PW A dozen Callaway Tour xi's A putter fitting for my Ping B60.
  12. When if was first learning, 14 years ago, I started off with the interlocking grip. When I played in high school my coach switched me over to the overlapping and it worked well. I stopped playing through college and when I came back to the game the interlocking just felt better and I've been playing that way every since.
  13. I manage a dozen homeowner's associations throughout Tucson and Southeastern AZ. Things slow down a bit this time of year with all the snowbirds home for the summer and golf rates drop up to 70%... That is, if you don't mind playing in 105 degree weather.
  14. http://www.crookedtreegolfcourse.net/ Not too bad of a place to play here in Tucson. Reasonably priced and better then most of the Tucson City Golf courses...
  15. Hi folks, brand new here. I work in HOA Management, yup we are the folks who tell you to clean the weeds out of your yard. I play weekly with the CEO of my company so at least we have good hobbies! Take care, BMA
