  2. Wasn't he just saying that because the dude's last name was Wood? That's how I interpreted it but everyone else I've talked to think they were mocking him for being worse than Tiger. Either way, not funny and pissed me off while watching. That couldn't have felt good to be that golfer.
  3. Wow, at first I thought they were just replaying ken dukes pitch, but it was just him hitting it in the same spot over and over again. I feel so bad for him.
  4. Jordan Spieth -7 Tiger Woods -8
  5. This is what bothers me about the competitive amateur golfing scene. In high school and college baseball we play against teams all the time that we know have no shot at beating us because they just aren't as good at us. They can end up scoring a couple runs and playing a good game for them, but in the end whoever scores the most runs wins the competition. Just because they play better than they normally do doesn't give them a right to say they won. I like handicapping as a system for accurately rating where you are as a player and for flighting / seeding competitive situations so the playing field is fair; but at the end of the day I think the numbers on the scorecard are the only things that should come into play.
  6. Mine's not correct and official but I keep track in a spreadsheet and calculate it using a handicap calculator I found online using the course rating and slope. I'm not correct and official because I don't know how to get it setup at the club I play at and I'm only living here temporarily so I'm not sure if it transfers.
  7. Played 36 holes Saturday. Shot 44,38, 82 on the first 18 which I played by myself because I got a half day off work. First 9 holes I just couldn't get my tee shots to go where I wanted them to go. Two or three times they ended up right behind trees which I'm stupid enough to try to just draw around which never works out the way I expect it to. I also hit the green on the two par threes and three butted BOTH of them. Nothing makes me angrier in golf than three putting par threes. Back nine was very good I figured out that if I put the ball in the middle of my stance rather than up near my front leg I don't pull it. Ended up hitting 7 fairways and 6 gir which got me a birdie and a bunch of pars. Second round I was pretty exhausted and after shooting 40 on the front nine rode the bogey train to an 85. When I get tired my short game just falls apart and what should be a chip one putt or two putt ends up being a chip->three putt almost every time. I legitimately have no idea how to read greens.
  8. I used a box set for a couple months and it was great because I didn't have to worry about shopping around for specific clubs that I needed, I could just go out and play. Once you start to be able to hit the ball consistently you're going to want to upgrade clubs as you go. I started out buying new irons, then a putter, than wedges and finally a driver. It's easy to justify the cost if you are only buying one or two parts every once in awhile. There's nothing wrong with the clubs in a box set but you will definitely see an improvement when you upgrade.
  9. Yeah I was going to just PM you how far I can drive but I decided to make a thread for that purpose. I'm going to play tonight I'll just PM you my stats for the round and all drive distances. Swell. And your user name is shorty.
  10. Ok so it's more of just a difference between the drivers themselves. Thanks for actually answering the question.
  11. The ball doesn't roll at all. It just stops where it hits.
  12. I have been playing the last three or four months with a hand-me-down "walter hogan" driver that my friends on our university's golf team have laughed at every time I have played with them. I bought a new Rocketballz 10.5 non tour driver on saturday and got to play with it for the first time today. It definitely carries about 30-40 yards further than my old driver, but it seems to just hit the fairway and die, sometimes only with one small bounce. So I did an experiment and hit my new driver first and carried it about 290 where it died; and then hit my old driver which carried 250 and then rolled up to 280. At first I thought it might be how high I hit the balls but I actually hit the old club higher than the new one. So my question is: what factors go into how much a ball is going to roll, and how can I improve that? Carrying 290-300 is a huge improvement, but with 20 or 30 yards of roll that would help so much.
  13. I play by myself two or three times a week and with others usually once. The key difference for me is that when I play with other people all of my shots seem to have a lot more meaning. On saturday I played in a group of four and had a couple really crazy shots that I still can remember like I just hit them because me and my friends laughed and talked about it for the rest of the day. I hit the same amount of good shots by myself but they feel so much less significant, especially when I play two or three more balls off the tee for practice. Another thing is that playing in a group is the only way to prove your skills to other people. Before this summer I used to only play once or twice a year and was pretty awful, so my friends didn't believe that I had broken 80 until I played with them and shut them up. Playing by yourself definitely shouldn't feel uncomfortable or weird though. Just go during off-peak times and you probably won't even have to get paired with someone else. Use the time to hit two or three balls and get some good practice in on things you struggle with.
  14. I don't really understand how vanity capping is even a problem. It doesn't have anything to do with you. When I play with my friends, we are not out there trying to lower our handicap; we are there to have fun. They cheat all the time (rehitting tee shots, counting scores wrong, dropping 5 feet from the green on par 3 after hitting it into the water, etc.) and never count it but I couldn't care less. When we play tournaments or in official events and they have to keep an accurate scorecard, we all say from the beginning that we will play this one correctly and it's never a problem.
  15. I would definitely wait to go to a real course until you can put the ball in the air and hit it straight(ish) a good portion of time. I have always been a fan of golf but I never played until about three months ago during spring semester. I started by watching youtube videos on how to properly hit the ball for short game, irons, driving, etc and took many practice swings. I then went to the range maybe 2 or 3 times practicing those techniques before taking it to a real course. Once you play on a real course though it's hard to go back to hitting at the range. Maybe that's just me and my ridiculous competitive personality always trying to shoot better scores.
