What a horrible round to provide data from. My driver was all over the place, and so were the rest of my clubs for that matter. I slowed my swing down and tried to simply connect and get one down the middle of the fairway after several sprays. I understand that's the whole idea, but only one of these felt halfway decent. I only had 2 - 3 drives that were straight enough to be accurately measured. The good, the bad, and the ugly: Most accurate drive of the day for me. Only 232 yards with a toned down swing, but center fairway. This was a line-drive pull to the left. But it was a straight line, so I measured it. 239 yards. I'm going to attempt another 9 holes tomorrow, depending on how my site visits go. As much as I want to turn this into a golfing trip, it's business as usual. Will also try to capture a couple of good ones from the tournament on Saturday. I'd like to see what my GPS registers on a ball I consider well-struck. I also plan on doing this for iron shots eventually to assist in gauging true distance.

97 on a par 72 course (played back 9 twice due to a tourney on the front 9) in New Mexico. First time to play this particular course, but the excuses for this round are non-existent. It honestly felt like I shot a 110+. I couldn't hit anything. Even my pitching was only on about 50% of the time, which is way off for me. On the flip side, the guy I played with shot a +1 for the round. I did discover something that helped on my putting about halfway through the round. Right arm straight and maintained at a straight angle on the follow through. This may or may not be basic putting knowledge, nonetheless, I sunk a 20 ft. birdie putt on a par 3 and got most of my other putts within 1 - 2 feet of the hole after applying this technique. I'm squeezing in a range trip and hopefully another 9 holes before this scramble on Saturday, or my time is going to hate me.

I agree that it would be fun. From what I've seen on here, not many of us live or die by our driver. But I disagree that it wouldn't prove anything. Lots of users saying they can hit the long ball... and even more casting doubt on the validity of those claims. Let's make this real and put each other to task. Honestly, I want to see if one of my crushed drives actually measures out to what I think it does. I'm consciously working on the rest of my game more than my driver right now, but dammit, I want to know. This would require that a certain degree of honor be upheld. You can easily cheat the system here, but that would only confirm the lack of a soul in your worthless, subhuman cheater body. I'm off to New Mexico for business tomorrow and I'm taking my clubs with me. I plan on playing a round when I get in town and contributing stats tomorrow evening.

20+ handicappers hitting 300 yards (mild rant)
muttbag replied to extremeld's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I wish I could hit a hybrid or fairway wood, period. I keep an Adams trouble wood in my bag, but its ugly. I either hit it less than 100 yards, or just shy of 200 (which is maybe 1 out of every 10 shots), and it goes everywhere. -
I see your point. But I don't see any way to prove short game performance other than having someone video your approach shots. I'm intrigued by driving distance and it seems to be a fiery red hot button on this forum, so I thought this would be a nice proving ground for all interested to put up or shut up.

20+ handicappers hitting 300 yards (mild rant)
muttbag replied to extremeld's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I was hitting about 15-20 yards less with my previous irons. These have easily added 15 yards+ to each iron, but I heard that may be due to the loft on the club. Either way, I'm just thrilled I finally have an iron in my bag that I can touch 200 with. Even though I barely get there. -
I'm just going to trust it, as it is currently the most accurate way to determine distance as opposed to eyeballing course markers.

Ah. There's the culprit. I'm still bumming the free version, but I don't mind the $20 (or whatever it is) to upgrade if I can access that feature. As well as get rid of those annoying ads.
-
That's google-worthy. I haven't found that feature on my app yet, I use GolfLogix. Sounds much easier! I'd like to see actual distances posted, and I don't think I'm speaking for myself.

Since there seems to be a running dispute on perceived driver distance vs. real driver distance, I'd like to propose an idea. Using a GPS-enabled golf app of your choice and your phone's screenshot capability, start documenting your drives on STRAIGHT fairway runs. I do not believe this will work on any type of dogleg fairway, because you can cut corners and skew the results since the yardage is based on the fairway route, not actual straight-line distance from tee to green. * Stand on the tee box from the spot where you hit your drive with your GPS-enabled golf app displaying your distance to the center of the green and take a screenshot on your phone. * Before hitting your 2nd shot, take another screenshot showing your remaining distance to the hole. * Post both screenshots. If I'm not thinking this through, someone correct me. I'm sure there is a slight fudge factor involved and the distance will be give or take a few yards, but if you're in the middle of the fairway, I don't see this being that far off. I'm doing this regardless.

20+ handicappers hitting 300 yards (mild rant)
muttbag replied to extremeld's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I consider hitting 160+ with an 8i long and a PW at that distance to be extraordinarily long. I once pulled a PW out for a 160 yd shot... on Xbox. My home course doesn't have many long ball hitters, nor low handicap golfers. So I guess my idea of long is subjective when compared to everyone else's. -

Maybe I'm just easily impressed. I have to hit a 6 or best case scenario, a 7i to get there. I don't consider myself a long hitter at all, probably average, I average 140 and max out around 145 with my 8i. -

I played in a scramble with one of our golf pro's from the clubhouse last night. Their is a major, major difference in watching a long-ball hitter crush every shot when he has a single-digit handicap as opposed to a long hitter who sprays it all over the course. The kid put a ball on the green pin high on a 163-yard (from the tips) par 3 with an 8 iron. He's 23 years old and hits blades. Truly one of the longest and most accurate hitters I have ever played with. -
Fake Tiger and Fake Jerry are as good as it gets for me. I couldn't wait for the Boys to get rid of Wade, but during that shaky period toward the end I found myself hoping they'd keep him week after week because I didn't want those Jerry and Wade segments to go away. It was the only light at the end of that dark Cowboy tunnel.

Yes sir. Dan annoys me to no end with his constant interruptions and ramblings. Musers and Hardline, all the way.

I play from the whites, which are middle tees on my home course. I've felt obligated to play from the tips once when a group I joined with played all the way back. I shot a 91, which is decent for me. But I still stick to whites regardless and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. I can't tell you how many times I've seen guys tee up on the blues and diff their drive less than 150 yards. If you can't get off the tee box consistently, blue shouldn't even be an option. 'Big dogs' are humbled very quickly when there's an audience stacked up behind them waiting to tee off while they fart the ball left into the drank.

Haha. That line from Phil is classic. And then "Thanks... Scoops."

Played in our weekly 9-hole scramble at the muni course today. I couldn't hit a damn thing. We finished -5, and I only contributed one drive which was about 270 with a slight fade. My irons were money on the range and horrible on the course. Played a couple of holes on the back nine because I'm trying to work some things out for a big scramble I'm playing this weekend with some vendors. The course was dead as it was getting dark, so I took 4 balls with me to each tee box. I crushed every single ball long and straight off the tee. From my calculations, I was hitting the ball between 270-280 on every 'practice' drive. Left elbow in, full hip rotation, and no fear on the follow through. Brain off. If I can do this on Saturday and get under my irons, I'll be happy.

So our local sports station here in DFW is 1310 The Ticket. One of the on-air guys doubles as 'Scoops Callahan', a takeoff of the boisterous 1920's fast-talking sports reporter who covers local sporting events. He catches Phil Mickelson here and produces an interesting exchange. In my opinion, Phil rolled with the punches and handled it like a pro. Good to know these guys can relax and mix it up on occasion. VOLUME ALERT- Start with your volume on LOW. The first few seconds are blaring. *This is fairly old... but probably new to most of you.*

Ran 3.1 miles yesterday. Holding off on any P90X routines because my back and shoulders are tight from either golfing or hitting the range an average of 3 - 4 times a week. Have a golf tournament this weekend with some clients and I'm afraid to push myself and pull a muscle. Lots of stretching the last few days has really helped though.

HA... I know what you mean. I have a separate 'holster' on my bag designed to hold a putter. This big boy won't fit in the sheath, so it's in my bag with the rest of the clubs. I rack the bottom of the grip almost every time I try to pull it out.
-
Agreed, sigfan. That is great. If I could put every 20' putt within 2 feet, I'd be happy. Out of all my shots on the course, my putts are the shots that leave me scratching my head the most. I'll have streaks of decent putting, but I can't read a green to save my life. The Fatso grip was a step in the right direction for me on a club that I need the most work on.

20+ handicappers hitting 300 yards (mild rant)
muttbag replied to extremeld's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I agree 100%, Jeremie. I can usually get one of these per round, if that (though not lately!). Most of the time, I live in the 250's - 270's, and less than that if my slice rears it's ugly head. Out of my golfing buddies, I play with ONE guy who comes even close to averaging 300 yards off the tee. He's a big guy and can consistently put it out there 290+. I'm ignorant with how handicaps are figured, but he shoots in the high 70's and occasionally low 80's. Simply put, the guy knows how to get through the ball. I was shocked when I recently witnessed a guy on my team hit a 345+ yard drive during a scramble. He couldn't have been 5'9 and had an average athletic build. His swing was amazing but he rarely caught his drives clean, except for this one. We used two GPS systems to confirm his distance. Now that's something I wouldn't have believed if I hadn't been there in person. That, to me, is the holy grail of tee shots... because I know I will never, ever hit a ball that far. Unless I'm on top of a cliff with a downhill fairway and a fierce wind at my back. -

I don't think this is being looked at the right way. If we were in the 1950's with wooden drivers and sub-par golf balls, I see your point. But 300 yards has seemed to remain this untouchable distance regardless of how many advances have been made in club technology. With the drivers we now have available, even an amateur golf with a big swing who connects can power the ball to 300 yards. Is it consistent? No! And regarding the amount of airtime vs. roll... I'm not sure if I see the point here. If you're driving a flat, wide open fairway, who honestly cares? The goal is to get the drive in the best position possible for your follow up shot. Maybe I'm making a mistake by replying after reading only the first few pages of this thread instead of all 25 pages, but this seems to be a common theme that some just cant seem to let go. I played with my neighbor and his 16 year old son a few months ago. The kid can play and consistently pounded 300+ yard drives straight down the middle on the front 9 (back 9 is a different story). Even 15 years ago, that would have sounded unrealistic. Look at the clubs we had back then. My point is, clubs have evolved, but apparently our viewpoints have not. If you still think a 300 yard drive is the holy grail, you're behind the times. We're not stuck with wooden drivers bound to steel shafts anymore. -
Lower rib muscle pull or something.
