Why Don't You Take Lessons?
Lowkie replied to ReviewMyGolfPro's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I have to agree. I've bowled for awhile now and just recently picked up golfing, but when I regularly bowled more I actually took a few lessons. I will say that I learned a lot of good information and had I had the time to practice would have helped me a lot more then it did. With golf I realize that the practice is just as important as the lessons. This being said I can only go to the course once a weekend and can either afford a round of golf or lesson. To me spending the money on a lesson that I know I can't practice between then and the next session just seems a waste. I know it's not the same but I have the books, the video's so when I can I'll practice their techniques in the back yard, but as the game is more about having fun spending time outside with friends and shooting the sh**, then it seems the better investment. -
I would tend to agree with thtat train of thought that yes when putting and chipping you have a lot less of a chance that you'll loose a ball OB or something like that. Although, as funny as it sounds, I have actually seen someone chip OB by accident. First off no I haven't read through the thread I kind of jumped in it because I'd recently had a similar discussion with a friend. When I say a "few feet" for me that's bee maybe 10-15 feet off my mark of where I am, which is typical for me. However that could also be the reason that I'm constantly told to work on my short game. I will admit that I have a very bad short game and have had several 4-5 putts or had to chip 2-3 times because I undershoot or overshoot the green. I'm getting it though lol

As a newer golfer to the game, and having read lots of the instruction books, watched hours of video's, and heard too many tips and tricks from friends to count, I agree with McLean. So you can drive a par 4 (I know it's an exaggeration) but so what. If you can't putt, chip, or pitch you might still bogey or double bogey the hole. From what I've seen you see more of your "faults" on the short game. What I mean is that the target is smaller, so the minor mistakes may make us miss the shot, when on longer shots we'd just be a few feet off where we really wanted to be but still in good position. That's not to say I don't think that long game should be practiced (I know I sure do!) but more time really should be spent on the short game and perfecting that. Again just my opinion as a newer golfer. Also this is what I've heard pretty much across the board since I started.

Hey I've worked long and hard to become the ultimate hacker that I am. LOL

At any of the three courses that I play at if I'd done that I'd have been asked to leave. @Cartboy so if when I'm golfing around the course and the marshall comes by me and my group often, not to tell us anything but just to bullshit with us for a sec and does this several times in the course of 18 is that a sign that we're going to slow or more that he's just bored?

This is correct, if you refer back to Post 25 there is a link to the the USGA rule on this particular subject.

Whoever comes out with that "zero skill" driver, I want one! I don't care the price I want one. Bet that would shave a lot of strokes off my game

@boogielicious ya....ya....it was my Iphone that messed it up. Damn you phone, and damn you Apple! -
You know I went by my gold store here after work myself and tried their chippers out too. Both were 20 but only one could actually be made legal. I'm soooo picking one up on payday!

I try not to take much personally, just like golf when you have a bad shot, laugh at it and move on. -
S
Yes, see my link in post 25.
Sorry didn't see the link. That sucks cuz all the ones at my local golf store either are double faced or have putter grips. Might just get one and swap the grip out myself to make it legal

LOL I won't tell anyone, and I don't take it personally at all just making a point. -
If there's a putter type grip on the chipper does it make it illegal

You know I see that I've been quoted twice in this thread, which is fine I realize I don't have perfect spelling, but I will say that if I went through your posts or anyone's really I'd find a myriad of mistakes. Spelling and grammar. -
I actually have already determined an "unofficial" handicap (30) but I like and will implement your ideas of keeping a "journal." I've heard about them before and wounds red what u would keep in there guess now I know
-
I don't have an official handicap, as I normally just play at municiple course not an actual club or anything, so I'd just probably put and X or to be more accurate a 10. Although while I do want to just go out and learn the game, I'd still like to keep acurate score to see if and when I'm improving.

I dont care who was cast for the part, I just want the dog!

I'm sure to see perminate results it'll deffinately take awhile, but hopefully I see at least a diffrence in feel on my shots. I golf 18 every weekend and practice just about daily in my backyard so hopefully it takes a little less then 6 months, but we'll see what happens.
-
So while I understand your thought and will do my best to impliment it, but I gotta ask, if you're using that method how do you score yourself on a whole. Like you said if you completely out of a whole pick up and move on, but then how would I score myself on those holes?
-
Thank you for the correction. Ya I'm still trying to get the vernacular down for the particular shots. I've started researching on youtube about grip drills and we'll see how that goes this weekend when I go out. One is acutaly a drill everytime you take a shot just to "remind" yourself what the feel is. Hopefully it helps. Also thank you for those videos, they were some good information and we'll see how they work this weekend.

So I will admit that I'm part of the "problem group." I show up on time for my tee time and tee off right at the time I reserved. However with myself being a new player and my normal partners also being new, we do play at a rather slower pace. Mainly for the reason that while the faster groups are playing a more leasurly pace they are normally making par or bogey on most holes while our scores have gone into the 10-15's for a single hole. Obviously more shots takes more time. However to offset this we let any group that is playing faster then us play through and then we continue on. My understanding is this is the considerate thing to do, and should therefore not be "penalized" by the other faster playing groups. Is this not correct?

I'm convinced now too, until I can afford it I'll probably just borrow my father-in-laws chipper that he has. I also have to make a correction, due to my ignorance being new to the game I was thinking that chipping when I talked about back spin when in reality I should have said lobbing. I tend to lob a lot of shots close to the green instead of chipping, but again I can't seem to get the back spin down on those shots, so it goes high and get's up on the green when I'm way below it, but then just rolls out, normally off the opposite side of the green. @David in FL , is there any drill or somthing that I can do to learn the proper grip pressure? I try not to "choke" the club but it always seems like I grip too tight and I can't seem to find that right grip pressure.
-
My father-in-law actually has this club and I've tried it out several times. For me at least I seem to have more versatility (at least I think I do) when I use a pitching wedge to chip. I've learned to control the loft and such during a strike and other then over hitting some times am usually pretty good. Still working on getting solid back spin on it though. I think next time I go to the course I'll try and suggested chipping more using the putter stance and see where that get be. I know off topic, but does grip pressure really effect your shot that much? I'm told I grip the clubs like I'm trying to choke the shit out of them and that if I stop I'd probably drop 5-10 strokes. But this way by a friend not a pro so I just wanted to see if there was any consensus about this.
