When I was first learning the golf swing the orange whip was by far the best training aid because it really helps your body to learn the golf swing. Now the best training aid I have is a maxfli australian blade one iron. It helps me with tempo and timing as well as ball striking accuracy. The better I get at hitting it the easier all my clubs are to hit. I would have to say it has cured my overswinging problem.

Whats the strangest thing you have ever seen on a golf course?
HackerBill123 replied to stealthhwk's topic in Golf Talk
A groundskeeper with loud squeaky shoes carrying a large bucket with a louder squeakier handle trying to walk behind somebody trying to putt. Instead of just stopping and letting the guy putt he tried walking slower which just made him stand out even more. He just didn't get it. The guy putting turned around and said really? He stopped loudly squeaking but the guy putting really couldn't recover his focus and missed a 6 footer. I bet we could start a whole new thread on funny groundskeeper stories. -
Backswing Sequence: What Leads the Way for You?
HackerBill123 replied to mvmac's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Definitely lower body, specifically left hip. I push with my left hip to the top and then pull with my left hip to begin my downswing. -
I've been playing golf for about 4 years now. I love to practice and I love inventing drills then testing them at the range. One of the regulars at the range had a one iron and I tried hitting it. It's a very difficult club to swing. Impossible to hit if you have too fast a tempo or a flaw in your swing. I got the hang of it by slowing down my tempo, now I can hit it pretty well. I would never use it on the course but for a training club it is great. For me it is serving two purposes; 1) It acts like a self correcting tempo timing club, if you swing too fast the ball goes nowhere or you get a very painful vibration in your forearms and 2) It makes every club in my bag extremely easy to hit. I bought a maxfli australian blade on ironfinder.com, it is a real bitch to get solid contact on the sweet spot but when you do what a great feeling it is. The more I practice with it, the more I'm hitting pure shots with my clubs, it feels like I've discovered a new training device. I have an orange whip which I think is the greatest training aid there is, I also have one of those short weighted clubs which is great for in the house training. I go to the range 4 days a week and hit 100 balls each session, and I play 3 days a week. I do probably an hour of drills a day for 4 to 5 days a week plus a daily 2 mile jog and some other assorted exercises. Anyone else use a one iron for a training aid ?

I'm pretty anal about keeping score. I want to know where I'm at scorewise always. I record shots to the green and putts. I normally average in the high 80's to low 90's. One of my best memories is sitting on a 72 on hole 17. I thought I could double bogie (it was a par 5) and still break 80. I didn't get excited and shot a par for a 77 and a P.R. I'm still chasing it but what I remember is I could stay in the moment and play one shot at a time. I have several rounds where I performed way outside my experience zone. I try and remember those moments before I play to keep my confidence up before any difficult shot,

Thanks ! I can't stop replaying the event in my head ! I'm going to have a glassy eyed look and a stupid grin for the rest of the week !

Got my first one today. I have been playing 3 years. It was at Fullerton golf course in California. Hole #6 176 yards. I used a 3 hybrid. I walked on by myself and was paired with someone. I bought him a beer. The hook just got set a little deeper with my golf addiction !

I have been doing the following and I usually one or two putt consistently; My stance is about hip width and I stabilize my lower body with a squat like stance. My grip is neutral and I lock my wrists, my fore finger tips are on the shaft. I bend down low enough so I use a regular size putter like a belly putter. My line of sight is directly over the ball and hole target line. Every morning I do putting drills. I do 50 or so putts without a ball using various strokes. I put 2 tees in the grass just far enough to barely let my putter through where the imaginary ball is. I then sink 10 putts on a putting board I made to set at compound angles. I also have an 8 foot felt type putting green but putting flat just got too easy. I can aim and estimate speed but I am still a work in progress when it comes to reading greens. I used to skateboard and surf so I look at the undulations in the green and visualize a path that I would surf or skate to the hole, I really don't aim at anything in particular just send the ball along that path. The shorter putts where I can see the hole out of my peripheral vision I try to use a stroke that the putter follows the ball to the hole. I fix my eyes on the ball when I putt after having visualized its path. I concentrate on a smooth pendulum like action where I am relying on gravity and minimizing all unnecessary body movement. I try to rotate only my upper torso.

Great videos, thanks. Avatar issue addressed.

One of the many things I like about golf is the practice. I expect continuous improvement every time I play. The range is a great place to practice but I don't think it is enough repetitions to groove the moves. I use the range to develop drills I can use at home and then practice those drills. Currently what I am doing is 50 repetitions each every day: 1) Orange whip hitting a rubber tee. 2) 3 iron impact drill also hitting a lower tee. I rotate about my left hip while holding the club in impact position. 3) 3 iron full swing hitting a tee. 4) Chipping swings at a low tee. 4) Putter keep my legs as stable and still as possible, rotate only the shoulders about the spine trying to perform a perfect pendulum motion while keeping the putter aligned as straight as possible. After the drills I jog 2 miles. Drills are dynamic and I am always testing new ones, the drills may be different next month but these are the ones that have evolved so far and they seem to work. Every time I play I feel more confident and get better good to bad shot ratio's. Does any one else use golf specific drills and what are they?

Stop Slice, Control Fade
HackerBill123 replied to skillzwhogolfs's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I am always fighting to keep my slice under control. What works for me is keeping my right elbow tucked into my hip on my downswing and not swinging too hard. If I do those two things I can hit a pretty straight ball about 240 yards. The more I work on keeping my right elbow in with my driver the better Im hitting my irons too. I do 100 repetitions a day with an orange whip to groove the move. -
What type of exercise improves your swing?
HackerBill123 replied to Sandbox22's topic in Fitness and Exercise
1. Are you a member of a private golf club? no 2. How many rounds per year do you play? 150 ish 3. Have you ever done exercise programs to alleviate pain or improve swing? Yes 4. If so, what type of program? Bowflex, Orange Whip 5. Does your home golf course provide exercise programs? no 6. Have you ever done yoga? no 7. Would you be interested in a yoga program that alleviate pain or improved wing? sure 8. If not interested, please briefly explain why. The one piece of equipment that not only helps my swing but taught my body how to swing is the Orange Whip. -
I was wondering if anyone would join a gym that had enough equipment for both strength and cardio, but also had a chipping area, putting area and net with simulators. A place where you can combine fitness and golf training. One day stairclimber and chipping drills, and another day cable strength workout exercises and hit balls into a net, maybe a 15 to 30 minute circuit of everything cardio, strength, putting, chipping and full swings into nets. I think it would be a great place to combine two passions fitness and golf. I would love to have a place like that to train, why isn't there anything like that ? Oh, I live in Southern California so you can go to a driving range or play golf year round, but I still think a golf specific gym would have some members, what does the group think?

I started golfing a little over 2 years ago. I have invented dozens of drills with a bowflex and golf clubs. I've discarded drills that didn't work and kept the ones that do. I have a drill for the backswing, weight shift, pivot and follow through all with cables on a bowflex. I have a mat and a net in my back yard where I'll swing for 50 repetitions and then hit 3 balls to test impact position. Lately what I do every day unless I am golfing. I golf Thursday mornings and twice on Sundays at dawn, eat, then play another 18 walking only. The other 5 days I do 100 swings with an orange whip then jog 2 miles. That is my current routine and I am really hitting the ball well lately. I also practice putting on an 8 foot putting strip. I have another putting drill I do that uses a 2 ft. x 4 ft board with a 2.5 diameter hole at one end, I covered the board with felt and tilt it up 3 degrees and practice arcing the ball into the hole from 6in, 12 in, and 18in away. That drill really helped with 2 foot yips. Anyway sorry for the long winded response but that is my current routine. I started as a 105 golfer and am currently in the low to mid 90's. I have shot in the 80's a few times with a pr of 83. My goal is to be a consistent low to mid 80's golfer. I am 54 and completely obsessed with the game.
