Does about $50 a club sound right? ($30 clubhead, $8 grip, $15 graphite shaft)? Golfsmith.com says that the components are made in the same factories as the major brands like Calloway, etc.
I just learned that you can make your own clubs by assembling them from commerically available components. The supplies needed seem to be basic; vice, pliers, hacksaw, etc. It looks like you can save money this way.
Anyone tried it?
I was reading Jeff Foxworthy's book on golf, where he says that all the holes in hell will be 55 yards. I'm a beginner, so I don't understand this. Are short holes like this considered the hardest ones?
PS - Just in case anyone's wondering, the book is only mildly amusing and not worth buying.
I've seen his Beginner to Winner and like it. He has others: The Swing, Greatest Golf Tips, Faults and Fixes, The Short Game, etc. His new series is Leadbetter Interactive.
Which ones did you guys like best?
I'd like to buy a set of graphite Pings ($900), but Wilsons ($300) are closer to my budget. So I'd like to ask: can anyone really tell the difference between a decent, inexpensive set and a top-of-the-line set?
Or it the difference only noticable to pros?
Why are golf shoes mostly worn? To stabilize the swing, or provide traction when walking across a damp, hilly course?
How important is it that I get golf shoes? Right now I just wear tennis shoes.
Can you wear modern golf shoes (ones with soft cleats) off the course?
Can I just wear hiking or trail shoes with a lugged sole?
Yes, that's it. The $100 price would probably include a driver and putter. Some of them, however, could be 20+ years old. It's a real random mix of irons.
Or do you think I would be better off by buying individual Ping clubs from the same set (G10 or I10) as finances allow?
I'm a total beginner and have the opportunity to buy a set of mixed clubs made by Ping. By 'mixed set,' I mean that the clubs will come from different Ping lines made over the past couple of decades.
Price will be $100. Does this make sense, or should a beginner avoid this?
I'm a beginner, and all my friends use Goodwill/Salvation Army clubs. One insists that there is no reason to spend more than $10 on a set of clubs.
How important are clubs for a somewhat serious beginner? What is least you should spend on a decent set of clubs? Are there any affordable clubs made in the USA?
Let's pretend for a moment that I'm a poor bastard in the 49th poorest state; an absolute beginner, but serious about learning. How do you recommend that I spend my golf budget?
Lessons at $45 each?
Golf videos?
Decent equipment instead of $1 Goodwill irons?
Driving range?
The local golf shop is giving away 6-packs of Srixons that cost $40 per dozen. I can't understand how the store can give so many of these away unless the wholesale cost of golf balls is very low.
Does anyone know what the manufacturing cost and/or wholesale cost of a high end golf ball is?
