Minimalist Golf Swing

Could it be that MGS teaches a traditional swing in a format more easily handled by non-superstars of golf? Could it be that small changes are really important in a golf swing? Could it be you should "live and let live" and not attack different things without really understanding them? "All we are saying...is give peace a chance!" Your gimpy buddy, Patrick -

I don't believe that will be the case Carl! But Tiger did pretty well with a very restricted backswingand a good shoulder turn today! Actually, that's the whole point. Kiran's MGS is about pre-setting the basic golfing positions- no big deal just different for people like me who are not Tiger or even you Carl, lol! Kind regards, Patrick -

Well, Matt if you have any insights to share or think I'm messing up somehow let me know-I was a little dizzy on the greens today after the front 9-it has been a few weeks since touching the sticks still I missed real birdie chances on 1,2, (made 4), 7. 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 real = within 30 feet of the pin. Kind regards, Patrick -

Acer, I have finished my first round on a par 71 less than 3 weeks after total knee replacement. Despite putting poorly I shot 39/42 on a par 71-my knee is a balloon and icing it now. Today, I simply pulled the club head past the ball and this was witnessed by Dr. Neil N, Commander D. Mann and Mrs Marybeth K. All 3 commented on my effortless distance. Some here will blame Kiran for my plus 80 score no doubt ignoring the 10 birdie putts/chips I missed while only making 1. They will also not admit their hypocrisy in allowing a student to slowly learn their system while demanding all MGS students completely follow every utterance Kiran has ever made. Likewise those 'all-knowing" marketers of re-hashed information will continue to ignore Dr. Suttie's approval of the MGS method since it does not fit their hate-filled narrative. When I step on my left heel, I am adding my own touch to what feels good for my body that day. Very much like many golfers do on certain days when playing a fade or draw-they go with it. As a result of the video, I enhanced my twist and hit a very satisfying draw all day being aware of my coming over the top of my knee in the video. -

I'm not sure of the question here nor of your objectivity. You guys do not like Kiran. I get it. You do not like anyone who follows her-check. You cannot have any opinion that disagrees with yours-check. So let me just reply with "asked and answered." Good luck with your marketing of Pure Strike-seriously. -

So it's not a shock the MGS system works since it's designed around better impact from inside but the films look tacky and there's not a lot of data that would help us work with students? I agree. My distance improved by 10% across the bag and even in a post-surgery haze, I was flying the ball 235-245 with driver, but I get your point because I like flashy, tied together presentations. Kiran's MGS is original research without the funding and polish of an effective program like PURE-STRIKE which I will study since it is serious original research which is always valuable. I gotta tell you that having grasped the pre-set/pre-twist by pushing off the right foot for MGS, fades and draws are very easy to adjust for with ball position and/or degree of shoulder turn at the pre-set. Keeping the right side lower than the left and lifting your left/front arm up the chest are the constants. Here is a fade in a non-flashy film. It looks silly but so does my cane and new artificial knee which is twice the normal size but both work. Good luck! Patrick -

Sometimes that stuff happens but we are on the straight and narrow now and just talking about the good and bad parts of the MGS swing, The Pre-Set Kinwar uses lowers the right side and head below the left and pre-turns the shoulders. You can see it here: Good luck in trying it! -

Kiran would be the first to say that keeping the right side lower than the left and the pre-twist are the magic moves of her system-there are only a very few of her student videos who do her entire system perfectly. Keeping the left arm lifting along the chest with "dead hands" and horizontal thumbs adds extra linear acceleration to the pre-set body mass into the ball. I still forget that sometimes and the swing works well-when I remember the dead hands feeling, I get extra power and distance. Kiran says the "what " of her system is set while the "how" is evolving. As Americans we are use to perfectly thought out solutions which are advertised as such-Kiran's MGS is not perfect but highly effective in my opinion. Cheers good luck in trying it! -

Innercity Mini replied to Phil McGleno's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Kiran says that in the video and agrees with your assessment. It is a very good swing with an "over-the-top" problem. The fix is in the spine's pre-twist which sets the weight forward and left side, left knee bent forward, shoulder high while setting the right hip and shoulder back and lower-pre-twisted. As the left arm lifts up the chest from the tricep against the chest the hands and right arm feel dead with both thumbs pointing behind the golfer until the arm gets to about 10 O'clock. Both feet were set with equal weight mid-step but back foot pushes the right hip and shoulder back sending left knee bent and forward creating the shallow guide for the arm lift and club face in the Angle of Approach. The hips are very powerful albeit slow muscles in creating torque and pre-setting them eliminates a lot of problems as does Jim Sutties "No Backswing Swing," especially timing issues, "over-the-top" issues, head movement issues and arm drop issues as the hands are already in the slot as the hip turns to impact. It is hard to unlearn the use of "Power Accumulator #2" the vertically cocked left wrist, but the gain in timing allows for full control of the back of left hand for controlling the club face! Right. Minimalist Golf Swing only. My video proves that a big right knee and a swollen right leg can be detriments to an inside path and a lot of other things. I know that there are other places to post "My Swing" on the blog but did so hear to try to respond to some of the challenges and attacks. Kiran Kanwar's MGS swing is about guaranteeing a shallow inside club head path to the ball repeatedly because 1) the club design, 2) the ball design and making physical changes in the golfer's swing that are bio-mechanically "friendly." On of Dr. Jim Suttie's pupils/assistants struggled with coming "over the top." In the following video Kiran get's Anthony to lower his right side and twist his chest closed as pre-sets and lift his arm up his chest to start his swing. At the end of the video are favorable comments by Dr. Suttie about MGS. The result of Anthony's Pre-twist and Tilt is to completely remove his "over the top" problem and to reduce pressure on his joints and reduce rotational sheer forces on his back. How does Anthony come down? More on that to come. Patrick -

The premise of your approach to all this is incorrect-I am not engaged in an intellectual spoof or debate. I am a teacher and I love to learn new valuable things to teach them to others-I'm not sure you get that Phil-it seems you are some type of "protect your ego guy at all costs by winning a blogging argument." You questions are weird and all based on your premise that you are all knowing and I am lying. At the end of April I knocked in a hole in one using Kiran's MGS components with a stiff but not surgically replaced right knee-school in session-just rehabbed from 3 herniated discs and torn shoulder muscles from Sept 2013- and I saw the power of a "non-backswing-swing," using a driver on a 190 yard uphill par 3. I still get teased by the guys about that since they hit a 5 iron on that hole or a hybrid. I don't care-finding consistent ball compression is big for me. School was out June 21st and my knee was bad and to be surgically replaced. I put Kiran's pieces together with a much more inside turn/tilt and a rt knee that was out of the way and her swing really allowed me to compress the ball like crazy . I mean do it on purpose when I wanted to! A golfer with a better short game would've busted par on two of those 3 rounds but my shock att being on new places on the golf course did not permit me to convert all the birdie chances. Your attitude Phil is lowering your altitude-take a bubble bath or drink a Fresca-eat a cheeseburger with grilled onions or get a lap-dance! My new knee is swollen and much bigger and guess what? It is in the way of my inside path and I'll fix it! THAT DOES NOT MAKE ME A LIAR OR YOU ANY BRIGHTER! IT DOES NOT CHANGE THE FACT THAT KIRAN'S MGS WORKS BECAUSE THE PHYSICS WORK ALONG WITH THE BIOMECHANICS! GRAVITY AND BALL DEFORMATION/COMPRESSION WORK NO MATTER HOW MANY KNEES YOU HAVE, LMFAO! THIS THREAD WAS A PERSONAL VENDETTA AND YOU GoT CALLED ON IT AND CAN'T TAKE IT! Your attitude on this Phil is claptrap-you forgot the joy of learning and love of the game! She has 70 videos, which video? What time of day? Which location? You see Phil anyone can be a moron by insisting on their point past absurdity! You 'lost" 150 yards-well what was the total-220 with a good knee your first time? I hit 250 with a good knee, 245 with a new knee and I'm outrageous? Figures lie Phil and liars like you figure-you see liars everywhere because of your own ghosts and demons. Some of those 7 irons rolled out past 160 Phil but I thought "it was hot and the ground was hard and range balls off of cement are juiced anyway." Phil, a great golf instructor must realize that an easy swing with a straight/more straight left arm from a shallow inside path at impact can make a ball fly! Neck tilt-check-standing up breathing-check, lol! Buying and selling is a daily event for me and this is a process that works long-term! Besides, Kiran has 70 videos showing people trying bits and pieces-it is an evolutionary process that is sure of the what and experimenting with the how. The more you protest my advocacy for her system and make these lame rules for the discussion, the more you reveal your own insecurity. Nobody? Why try so hard to shout me down? a 5-iron 130 yards-did you expect anyone to believe you Phil? I can backhand my putter out of the woods 130 yards on one leg, lmfao! Please note that I used multi-quote on this My mom would be proud! Kindest Regards Boys, Patrick P.S. since Phil is the moderator of this thread, and he is a "hater" of MGS, let me suggest that we agree not to call each other liars anymore since it advances nothing and either close this thread or try to create a friendly discussion of why it works/does not work and how. I will not stop posting willingly. Perhaps you guys can get me thrown-off the site because of your relationships but you sure don't have the intellectual firepower to win the argument straight out. -
Agree with most of what you said and thanks for saying it. I need a life-threatening reason and a clear background. It has to be both urgent and important to disregard the clear background! I think people need to be taught the NRA safety course in school along with a course on ballistics. If they can justify "planned" parenthood they can justify personal firearm safety.

Well Bill, my swing will get more MGS as my knee gets smaller! I am doing some of MGS with keeping a "right side in tilt" but still coming over the top of my knee, not my hip! Tomorrow will be better and the next day etc. But since when should a person stop trying something they don't do perfectly? There is a little strangeness "up in here!" And prior to my knee surgery I shot an 86, 83 and 82 with a stiff knee. attempting MGS. This swing is so good that doing just a few things right by a gimp like me can really make a difference! And thanks for the the well-wishes and temperate comments ! Kind regards. Patrick -

Phil, my video shows I have a pot-belly despite losing 20 lbs. due to surgery! And though I can hardly stand for 45 golfballs I still hit them pretty dang good! I f you stop accusing me and Kinwar of making stuff up I will be a new friend to you though my girlfriend who does hit her 7 iron 130 yards, might get jealous! Anyway, two wrongs do not make a right. And whatever mistakes you are making with the Minimalist Golf Swing (c'mon admit it) should not diminish the years of service you have provided your students and the game of golf we all love. I am sorry for abusing you and I have never lied to you! (BIG SMOOCH? ) KINDEST REGARDS, Patrick -
My Swing 15 days after a new knee replacement: The more I stare at this film the more amazed I am with Kiran Kanwar's Minimalist Golf Swing. Below is her description of the "what to do": http://www.cybergolf.com/golf_news/the_minimalist_golf_swing_part_ii How it Works - for the 'Just-do-it' type Golfer Think of a good set-up as good "planning." Then make your backswing the perfect "investment." Finally, simply consider the downswing as a time to rake in maximum "dividends" from a sound investment! Checkpoints for good "planning" and "investing" everything is the perfect stock (i.e., backswing!) A mirror might help to check these positions. ("FO" or face-on means with the mirror facing the golfer and DTL or down-the-line means with the mirror placed behind the golfer, when looking down the target line). The Minimalist Set-up The elbows should be as close to one another as possible, with NO tension in the hands or shoulders. The right shoulder, waist and the head should all be slightly behind (DTL) and below (FO) the left shoulder, so that the entire body feels it is slightly 'behind' the ball - leaning AWAY from the target instead of towards it. The ball should be centered or just slightly left-of-center of a shoulder-width and square stance. The Minimalist Backswing The takeaway, or first part of the backswing, is made by pushing the entire left arm plus shaft in a straight line towards the right foot (towards the right heel for longer clubs). During the takeaway, the right shoulder must remain below the left, and, when seen from the FO angle, no part of the right shoulder should be visible. The arms then continue to the top - which is up to approximately 10 o'clock or shoulder/right-ear high along the same path, with both thumbs, especially the right thumb pointing away from the right ear. In other words, there should be no angle between the right thumb and right forearm. There should also be no extra - that is, independent of what the arms cause - rotation of the body during any stage of the backswing. The Minimalist Through-swing The only downswing thought, if any, should be to simply slap the clubhead past the ball. The body - especially the nose, head, right shoulder and right leg, must face forward and not the target until well past impact, preferably with the right heel grounded until the momentum of the swing alone pulls it up. Why it works - for the 'Explain-it-to-me-First' type Golfer Once it is accepted as an incontrovertible truth that the club MUST arrive at the ball from an inside path and at a shallow angle, and, along with these two conditions, as fast as possible, and that NOTHING ELSE MATTERS (except a square clubface, which will happen as a result of using this swing) everything else merely follows on from these requirements (technically termed the Ball Flight Laws). Concede gracefully to these LAWS, make sure the backswing is set up to ensure that these things cannot help but happen in the downswing, preferably without volition - and voila, instant success! Consider the set-up plus backswing the cause for good impact, and the downswing merely the effect. To make an efficient minimalist move, a golfer must set up for the inside path, and swing back correctly for the required weight-shift and shallow angle of approach to the ball. The right shoulder, being set up slightly behind and below the left, establishes the golfer's body for an "inside" takeaway. The direction in which the left arm moves, with both wrists remaining as straight as possible, creates the width of backswing required for both weight-shift and a shallow angle. The wrists remaining as straight as possible have other benefits too - one being that they keep the "inside" path of the club from becoming "behind" (or too "flat" as some term it), and it forces weight-shift as the right arm is kept at its maximum distance from the ball. Another benefit is that a square clubface is maintained at all times. Many swing faults disappear simply by making the recommended backswing. These faults include an over-swing, a flying or chicken-wing right elbow, a reverse weight-shift and many incorrect clubface and shaft positions. The Minimalist Golf Swing can also be called the "do-nothing" swing, for two reasons: Firstly, the less independent moves a golfer makes in the backswing (bending wrists, rotating forearms, buckling elbows and knees, and moving feet to name a few), the less movements are required to be undone, in precise sequential order in the downswing. Secondly, every time a golfer makes a good "Minimalist" swing, the feeling at impact is, "I did nothing to make that great shot" - the club did, and was allowed to do, what it was designed to! So, golfers wishing to get better quickly, do nothing and achieve everything! Now, with my swollen right leg, back leg, and just getting off serious meds, I could not remember to distribute my weight evenly and only lifted my left arm up my chest instead of moving my straight left arm to my right heel then up! As a result, I slightly pulled more than a few shots coming over the top of my back knee and not my back hip! In other words, keeping my right -side in tilt throughout rescued my bad physical condition, still gave me great distance and would've allowed me to play a round and still compete! My overall weakness probably saved me from making big pulls. Tomorrow, I'll bend both knees with equal weight, move my left arm in to my right heel then-up my chest, keep my right side in tilt ! My distances on the fly at the range-7 iron 140-150 yards as I kept my balance, PW was 110-115, 3 hybrid was 175, driver was 235-245 and 5 iron was 160-175. Imagine a swing so simple that a guy with a brand new right knee can do so well after not touching a club for 15 days!

Thanks AB! However, I'm a teacher and golf is my one vice so I need to "bust a move" on the golf courses of America and I really like Kiran's MGS stuff and was doing great with it prior to surgery. This is all part of my rehab so no worries! anyway, my surgeon is a big golfer and he is taking me to his club in a couple of weeks if I am ready! Patrick -

I thought Erik was being like Phil, stubborn and obtuse about a new system Phil thought to rip with no resistance. I did not realize Erik has actually developed a swing system, Pure Strike, which carefully considers important factors of the golf swing. I no longer consider Erik in the same category as Phil. -

Well, my new right knee did not want to get out of the way of my arm raise! My right leg has gone down in swelling but is still huge! No wonder I pulled more than I ever had. More pre-turn and tilt! Also, I was so worried about the new knee I never tried to start with the weight equally divided on each foot before the pre-sets. Finally, i was pleased I was able to hit my 7 iron further than Phil's 5 iron though I am not a teaching pro! Seriously, as bad as today was, I could still break 90 with this and maybe do a bit better although getting the ball out of the cup will be a tough stretch-I'll have to buy one of those thingies at Golf-Galaxy! Kind Regards, Patrick
