  1. I greatly appreciate the discussions and input from all... The idea didn't work out for me, but I learned a lot! Thanks, guys! Tooz
  2. You can get a lesson and fitting from Mark: https://www.facebook.com/GolfUSAStuart He's very good at what he does!
  3. Senior - I played those in Toledo, years ago. It was great fun, especially when it was cold. I don't know if there would be the same draw in Florida...
  4. Lessons first - if you can't use the tools properly, it won't matter how good the tools are... Get your swing consistent, then get or adjust the clubs to match, IMHO...
  5. Wow - you guys are awesome - I really appreciate that you took the time to offer your honest opinions, as that is exactly what I need! I like the idea of the indoor range and memberships - I used one in Toledo years ago - but it wouldn't work well in Florida, as the winter is our busy season... but it's got me thinking... in the heat of the summer (our slow season) or dark of night (dark at 5pm in winter), how about a weekly "evening event" - driving and putting contests/seminars/lessons... That might be fun, one night a week... The internet is a huge competitor on price - this was mentioned a couple times - I wonder if a price-match would work, if I could match prices without losing money. It would get customers in the store and perhaps they'd pick up a few more things while they are there... The idea is coming together and it looks more like we may take the plunge than it did a couple weeks ago. The partners are excited and convinced it would work, although I'm not totally there yet. My main concern now is the investment, which will be a huge chunk of my retirement, so I'm naturally nervous about that. I'd like to get some outside financing or investors, but that adds to the monthly minimums and puts more pressure on making the sales and cash flow. Again - thanks to all who contributed your time and opinions - I appreciate it more than you know! Hit 'em straight!
  6. Most people play for enjoyment, right? If you hit clubs you enjoy, who cares about being called a 'pariah or an idiot'? If someone called me that because they don't like my equipment, I'd rather not play with them because they obviously have issues...I love my 30-year-old Palm Springs irons and have no reason to replace them - I play for my enjoyment, nobody elses!
  7. When I was in the US Navy, a Conscientious Objector was understood to be that way based on his/her religion. In my eight years, I only knew one guy who left the Navy as a CO - and that was in boot camp. I think the recruiter lied to him about what to expect in the service. I never heard any discussion regarding the aggressor or defendant argument... There is no way Bae would qualify for CO status in the US - even though many treat golf like a religion, it just wouldn't fly.

Animated and emphatic doesn't work with most police - it certainly didn't work with Michael Smith or Eric Garner, did it? When given an order by a law enforcement officer, comply and sort it out in court. People don't win fights with police.
  9. Phil, I appreciate your comment, you are correct that I should be more of a contributor. I will do so in the future, but I am too busy to even play these days as I pursue a potential career change... So do you have any advice for me?
  10. Wow - thanks again for the excellent responses and discussions! Someone mentioned books - how often, if ever, do you buy golf books at a golf store (impulse purchases)? 1BadBadger - I like the idea of a gathering place - perhaps a Kuerig coffee machine along with other drinks. Did you charge for the sodas? Has anyone attended a seminar or meet-and-greet with Tour players at local shops? There are a few pros that live in the area - would it be worth spending limited marketing funds for appearance fees and extra advertising to have a pro visit? If a golf shop includes supplies for the tennis crowd, is that more or less of a draw? What other sports could be included in the space, that would compliment golf? Club repairs are in the plan, as well as lessons. What other non-merchandise offerings are possible - low investment, higher margin items or services - could be offered? Is there any value in co-marketing golf carts?
  11. Thanks for the input, gentlemen. One thing I took advantage of, years ago, was a putting lesson which included a custom built putter, offered by the local community college - is that something that would attract people? Would you participate for $40 or $50? How likely would a coupon (10% off for purchases over $25) work to get you in the store? Would you pick one up off the counter at your local course? Is there value in hiring someone for lessons who is a PGA Pro? Is that qualification important to those seeking a lesson or series of lessons? Again, thanks in advance for your responses! Tooz
  12. I'm considering buying into an off-course golf shop. I don't expect to make a gazillion dollars, but I want to make a living.... What makes a shop successful? What makes you pick one store over another? What marketing methods get your attention? Thanks in advance for your thoughtful replies - hit 'em straight!
