Your 200 yards from the pin....
flanagan replied to kleraudio's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
If it's "your" 200 yards, I figure I own it and can hit anything I want and get it there. Seriously, 22 degree hybrid. -
I have a Leupold I bought for deer hunting, get much more use out of it for golf, works great.

Just received Newport 2 mid slant. Have played a mallet style Odyssey Black for last three years. Took it out without practicing last night and played. Like the feel, the sound, the look. Took a little adjustment, having used a much smaller headed putter, (a Cameron Newport with a compact head would really catch my eye), but got used to it, and most importantly, MADE PUTTS that were "have to make it" putts. Had been demo'ing different putters for several months. Is this Cameron worth it? Yes. Was my Odyssey worth it (not far from the same price)? Yes. Whatever putter suits you is worth it, regardless of whether it is $300 or $50, just make sure it fits, is set up properly and you hit it on the sweet spot with the proper stroke for your putter. I will say the cover that comes with this model, silver with red dots, is not to my taste at all, don't know if it has any value, but if someone with one of these model putters that REALLY likes the headcover and doesn't plan on selling it on ebay has some interest in my giving it to them so they have a spare or whatever, I would consider it. Send me a private message.

Is GPS worth even having?
flanagan replied to kleraudio's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
There is really no way for anyone here to know what $150 means to you or how a GPS fits into your golf game. Do you want it because it's fun? Get it, you'll have fun. Do you have the distance control to justify one? Who knows. I still think there is something to be said for getting a feel for yardages, referencing course markers, etc. But, if you jump around from course to course, maybe you don't really get to know one well enough. Just from the fact you've asked the question to complete strangers, you are destined to get it, so do it and enjoy. -
Can shaft flex cause a pull??
flanagan replied to kleraudio's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
It's your swing. -
Less control and the distance gain, if any, should be marginal. Pretty good body of research out there suggesting most people play drivers that are too long. If PGA pros could control 46" drivers, they'd be hitting them, most use drivers much shorter, at least that is what is reported.

Funny, but I had masking tape putting lines in my bedroom, subscribed to golf magazines with my paper route/mowing money and read paperback instructional books when I was in junior high, but never really had a "favorite" golfer until Nicklaus cemented that position for me during the summer of 1980.

I'm sure you'll get some good responses, but you might also considering shooting an email through the Cameron website or checking that forum (unless you have to pay to participate), just a couple of other possible sources of info.

I'm not sure he's cleaned it up all that much. My daughter and I watched him run through a succession of lip-read swear words earlier this year, at the Players, I believe, surprised the cameras stuck with him as he was walking and muttering "F***, G**D****, SOB", one right after the other. Mind you, she's 16 and she and I laughed, though she would prefer he didn't spout like that, and I guarantee everybody in earshot could hear him, so I wasn't too impressed by that. I believe he's concerned enough about his image that he probably thinks about toning it down, just also believe when he's in his "zone" of competition, he forgets. Hopefully, he'll get it all under control. Was at a junior tournament recently and got a kick out of all the boys looking very "Tiger/Nike" -- an example of how he has positively influenced kids to participate and look "professional", but you have to figure they catch all aspects of his persona, which is a legitimate concern.

Rules Question - Marking ball on the green...
flanagan replied to TheGeekGolfer's topic in Golf Talk
No, you can't use your bag. Read the rule. -
Who and when? Let's make sure the premise is accurate.

Titleist D3/Voodoo - what is ballooning?
flanagan replied to flanagan's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Appreciate very much all of the above responses and the explanations. Thanks. -
Titleist D3/Voodoo - what is ballooning?
flanagan replied to flanagan's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I'd fall into the "steep" category, loft is 9.5 on my D3. If I'm understanding you, and perhaps what I may hear back from our intrepid leader, I may be experiencing higher ball flight vs. whatever "ballooning" is, and my lots of carry, no roll may be tweaked with a different shaft and/or addressing a swing issue. No doubt that's the case, had seen "ballooning" in reference to the Voodoo and was trying to get a handle on what that meant and how to recognize it. Thanks for the reply. -
Titleist D3/Voodoo - what is ballooning?
flanagan replied to flanagan's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
My recollection is the v2 vs. the Voodoo was more the answer to the ballooning issue, as opposed to the D2 vs. D3. Great review by the way, nothing about my post is intended to suggest otherwise, quite the opposite. I hear what you are saying about ballooning, the question is, I guess, how would I distinguish/recognize its effects? It's a term I see used often. -
Beware of club lengthening effects.
flanagan replied to flanagan's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I researched the issue on some of the archives here and didn't really find any dissenters, before going through with it and as the clubs were being shipped out called Ping just to allay my nagging fear I should just have them reshafted(just didn't want them to come back and have a problem because she really can't be without them another week this summer). It's a distracting sound, the opposite of what you want to hear on a well struck shot, believe me. Should have gone with my instincts, but all available evidence suggested there would be no problem. -
Club and shaft recommendation?...
flanagan replied to Saint's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Ball flight and control are not mutually exclusive subjects, more to it than just not "maked you feel over", as you put it, though I'm not really getting that. Just because you say you hit a 9 iron 165 doesn't tell anyone much, maybe it's rolling 40 yards, maybe it's 165 every 5th big swing and pulled left and over the green 20 yards. Take the advice offered and get fit or find a place to sample some different shafts. Assuming your 80% 150 yard 9 iron is what you would hit from 150 to the green (and I believe that's what you are saying), and it's as accurate as your swing allows, I see no reason for you to go to an X. -
My daughter, who was fit for her Pings two years ago, needed her lie angles more upright and shafts lengthened 1/2" so they would fit her 2009 profile. Arranged to have them shipped back to Ping, work done quickly, no problems. I actually called and talked to one of their customer service persons, who was very helpful, but assured me lengthening would be the way to go, vs. reshafting, and would notice no difference at all in performance. She noticed as soon as she hit them when she got them back a much different sound to her irons, I've hit them and it is a strange sort of "thunk", and not real pretty. It is clearly related to the insert at the top of the shaft, and has affected the performance of the clubs. Come the end of October will be sending them back to Ping for reshafting, and another set of grips. Ping may take into consideration my conversation when it comes to the cost, may not, and I'm not putting this out there to really complain about that so much, as I am to relate this experience to others. From my perspective, based on this outcome, I'd recommend reshafting the first time and having one solid original shaft.

First, I love the feel of this club, did lots of research, hit it (but unfortunately at a time when my swing was a little out of whack) and bought it. Second, it is 1/2 inch shorter than my G10, which I like, and I have found a significant difference in finding fairways with the Titleist, for whatever reason. I have found on average, however, my distance is less and not attributable to the shorter shaft. Third, I seem to hit the ball very high, but no roll. In looking back at the review here, I see that was a concern. Obviously, there is no valid apples to apples way of translating someone else's experience as related in print, and I did not have the option of testing an alternate shaft. What is "ballooning" in a shaft as those of you who use and understand that term would define it? Don't know if that's what is going on, but am curious how I would recognize it as an issue, if that makes sense. Thanks.

I have them, I really like them. Now we've got that out of the way. One thing to check. Titleist AP2s have weaker lofts when compared with many other clubs (don't know about the Mizuno clubs you are considering), but you may want to check vs. those or your current, in case the lofts and potential for apparent loss of distance is an issue for you, then you can figure out how to address that issue, or not address it, as you see fit.

If a flag becomes destroyed or beyond cleaning/repair, the recommendation is it be burned. There is no requirement a flag be burned just because it merely touches the ground. You are really overblowing this issue. The only conspiracy I don't see suggested is whether Stevie shot JR. On a personal level, I don't really care if they want to use the American flag for pins, but I see the point of those who may be moved to concern (just maybe not to the level of suggesting they are getting away with something). Perhaps some flag bearing insignia of the armed forces might be a good substitute, but with the tournament being focused on D.C. and around the 4th of July, would expect them to keep using the U.S. flag on the pins.

It's been referenced before that the head movement, down, is something he really has to watch, and becomes an issue from time to time, even though it looks like he always has it to some degree.

What announcers are you talking about? There aren't any golf announcers on any of the networks covering tour events that don't know that all of the players know the yardages. Any time there is a question you see the shots of them discussing with their caddie and looking at their book. Nobody pretends it's a mystery when pros know the right yardages.
-
I thought the choices were 4 or 8 degrees, maybe the 7 is something new? I guess it depends on what you mean by firm fairways. I've got 8 degrees on mine and can't really think of any time I've felt like I needed less.

Clubs too short for my height?
flanagan replied to Ed_Bighead's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I'm 6'2" and my 5 iron is 38 1/4" long. That being said, the length of your arms will tell the tale. Get fit. If the rest of your set is consistent, you've got some short clubs and costing yourself distance and may be creating or grooving swing flaws due to the length of your clubs. Get it checked. I hope you shoot in the low 40s, also, but from your scores, you've got a lot more to work on than just consistent long irons. Getting the right clubs is the first step, so you can enjoy practicing and meeting whatever goals you set for yourself.
