  1. Good point, the 755 had the Tri Spec and Mizuno's have S300. As I recall the Tri Spec was suppose to be high launching with some mid bend, maybe that with the lower loft is the culprit. Almost feels like I'm hitting 1 or 2 iron. Even a flush hit just doesnt launch high enough. Probably just need more time to get used to it, maybe trying too hard for the first trip to the range. The good news is the 6-pw feel real good, just a bit more workability, and oddly enough seem more forgiving. I'm really taking a a chance on these, first non-Titleist irons in 18 yrs. I just felt a slight change would energize me working on my shot making this year. The plan was for the AP1 714 until I found these new for about $300 cheaper.....
  2. I just replaced my +1/2" Titleist 755 with mid size grips, with Mizuno MP-53 standard length / grip. Only my third set since 1996 (DCI 962, 755, now MP-53). Curiously just hit them all OK, takes some breaking in but I did have some observations. Much lower ball flight 3-5i and more right to left. 6-pw seemed fine and worked better left to right. Probably will still add 1/2" and get mid grips. Thoughts from anyone on iron changes? Especially the lower flight 3 iron, that bugs me a bit.

    I hate the wind

I'm working on it, still some issues with the driver. Probably more swing related than wind, but its in my head and I can rely on the 3w. I really want to get back to the driver more, but this wind has me focusing on target golf. If a 3w gets me within 150 I'm doing it. For some reason when I tee the driver low, I tend to get more draw than I want. Still working on it.

    I hate the wind

Moved to Corpus Christi, TX (Windsurfing Capital of the World) in 2007. My handicap went from 8.6 up to over a 12 in the first 18 months. I came from Baton Rouge, LA where the courses are typically soft and no wind, now in Corpus they are typically firmer with lots of wind (~15-40 mph). The worst issue for me was my driver and not being able to play the wind. Just now I'm beginning to flirt with the 70's after 2 yrs of issues. I've learned to hit stinger 3w's of the tee and many more 3/4 8's & 9's. When in Baton Rouge I could hit high full wedge shots, down here you have to be more creative. The bright side is during these last 2 yrs my chipping and putting has improved dramatically. Index is beginning to go down again, I expect a few more rounds and I can get back to single digits. Travis
  5. Actually, my Hogan CFT's the 1H is 17*, 2H is 19* and the 3H is 21*. The 2H is a nice fit between 3i & 3w. In my case I have thought about the 1H vs the 3w, as I would expect them to be similar in distance. But in that case I think the 3w is more versatile (a bit longer and easier to work off the tee). I'll keep evaluating a 3w vs 1H, but doubt that I'll ever pull the 3w out of the bag. Travis

  7. I use a Hogan CFT 19 deg 2-Hybrid, and no 5w. I absolutely kill it of the tee and its my go-to club if I need it straight ~240. Off the deck its much shorter, its my 215-225 yd club. I love it in my bag, especially since my driver has been horrible this year, at least this club can get me in the FW. Will never go back to a 5w, just not versatile enough for me. Travis
  8. Just ended an annual tournament amongst friends. Its a only eight guys, and we play 4 rounds (4 diff courses) in two days. I actually played a practice round the day before, so for me 5 rounds in three days. 87, 96, 88, 82, 91. All were par 72 and ~6600-7000 yards. Three of the four I had never played before and I never really got it going. I felt like every round I left 5-6 on the course. The best round of 82 I only hit 3 GIR & 3 FW, up and downs were about 50%.
  9. I've tried Greenfinder, but it seemed slow to me on my BB Curve. I have to admit I like the Golflogix, but would agree it does need some work. Notably the stat/score tracking concept is nice, but very slow and has locked up on me twice. At this point, I think its best to just use as a GPS only and no stat tracking. I've also found that the yardarge updated quicker than Greenfinder and was pretty accurate. At $40/yr, I'll take my chances for now. Certainly better than I had before, which was nothing.

    Texans

Corpus Christi here. Only two places in Corpus for quality golf... First is Corpus Christi Country Club and the second is Newport Dunes (it's actually in Port Aransas). I'm a bit new to the area, so if anybody looking for a player, let me know.
  11. 82 (46/36 par 70). 7 over after 3 and had a triple on 9. The rest of the day was pretty good, a couple of birdies on 10 & 11 and then 4 straight bogies, then pars the rest of the way. Felt pretty good about the day, despite the big numbers I had some nice up and downs. Even made a couple of bogies on penalty stroke holes. Haven't really put it all together this year, working on it. Travis
  12. Groove my driver swing to a power fade (from a draw). I've always been able to work irons a bit either way, but the driver has always been right to left, and this year it has been way more left than right. Been working for a week on the fade looks to be much more consistent. We'll see.
  13. Its the R9 460, but only one shaft option... RE-AX 60 graphite. Anybody have any experience with this shaft?
  14. I know exactly what you mean, some of my fears with the pull hook result in an absolutely massive push. I Literally can crush the push 300+ about 60-70 yards right. That push, doesn't slice, is probably 50 yards longer than my straight drive (when I hit it straight). Glad to know I'm not the only one with some weird driver issues. Another thing, usually these issues cause me to use my 3w. Some days my 3w is within 15-20 yards of my good driver swing. I think its the lower draw flight, but the 3w is always 240-260, but my good straight drives seem to only go ~250-270 and do not seem to roll. Anybody else have that significant difference in ball flight from the 3w to driver?
  15. For the shorter irons, I tend to de-loft with my steep swing thus increasing my distance on those clubs. This is less pronounced for the 3-6i. 160 for a 9i is a bit strong for me, but for not an issue for an 8i.
  16. D - 240-270 very erratic, ~25% fairways 3W - 230-250 more consistent & almost as long as the driver 2h - 220-230 3i - 210 4i - 200 5i - 190 6i - 180 7i - 170 8i - 160 9i - 150 P - 130 (48) G - 115 (52) S - 100 (56)
  17. Newport Dunes is fantastic. There are no courses within a 100 miles that compare to the condition it is in, almost perfect. I really like the layout as well, I hope they can afford to keep in this condition, but I have my doubts considering the recession and the lack of development of the neighborhood. I've played the CC Country Club several times, but haven't become a member so I play when I can. Most of my rounds are either at Northshore or I travel to Victoria where I have a customer I take golfing. Recently I'll take the kids to Kings Crossing, just to get out. That place is in terrible shape, but it's close, cheap and almost empty every time I go. Since I'm new to the area I really don't have a regular group to play with, so its random where I play. Most of my practicing is at the goat farm on Cimmaron. Good luck with your driver swing, I'll be working on mine as well. Nice to meet someone from Corpus on here, I haven't found many avid golfers in the area. Lots of hunters & fishermen though. Travis
  18. Wow ,you're in the same boat as me. I'm currently at 11 and up from an 8 since we moved to Corpus Christi in 2007. The wind, along with my driver swing is killing me. I scatter them from pull hooks, tops, whatever. When it goes with my driver, it can impact my 3w, really gets in my head. This is actually kind of a newer problem, especially the last 3-4 months. I've shot as low as 80 and as high as 94 (at Newport Dunes), the 94 I didn't hit a single fairway and 3 from the tee several time. Good news is that the rest of my game is getting better. I think the comment from above might be helpful to you and me, try a more flat/slower swing. By the way, where do you normally play? I'm in Corpus as well.
  19. I was so looking forward to playing this course this weekend with a pal, he plays to a 10 handicap and I'm over 11 since the move to Corpus Christi (from an 8). Adjusting to the wind here has been a bit of a challenge. Anyway, we played a course similar to a canyon course where if you scatter your drives your in big trouble. Well I got some type of hitch in my driver swing that caused me to start hitting low pull hooks, most of them starting very low hitting the ground within 20-30 yards hooking right. The bad thing is that after a few of those with the driver, i switched to the hybrid, same thing, then the 3W, same thing. It wasn't until the last 2 drives of the day I hit solid 3W (which for me is ~250 with a slight draw). Most of the day it was 3 off the tee or barely advancing out of the very thick desert bushes. Worst day of golf in 10 years, but got a lot of practice with 3i and 4i approach shots. Lots of scrambling to get to a 94, with 8 pars to go along with quad, 3 triples, 3 doubles, and 3 bogies. My swing is more of a digger style, rather than scooping. Somewhat aggressive swing and take decent divot with irons, but my irons are my strongest part of the game. Stats show 78% GIR when I hit the fairway, but on a good day I'm 40% fairways. But usually I don't have these types of misses. Question, has anybody had this type of breakdown? My driver swing has always felt different from my iron swing. I think I really need to find a simple swing for the driver or maybe just work the 3w for a while. Any thoughts? Needless to say my pal beat me like a drum, and to add insult to injury he had one of best rounds ever for a 74 (100% fairways by the way).
  20. yep, different strokes for different folks. I think more than anything the loft/shaft combination can make a huge difference in ball flight, which can in turn make a difference in the opinion. I play the 10*, which work perfect for me as I tend to keep the ball low off the tee and that loft compensates, I think because the result are pretty good. I've never hit the Grafalloy Comp NT Proto on the G5.
  21. I'll disagree with the above, as I have hit both the G2 & G5 and cannot really tell the difference. I own the G2 and haven't hit the Rapture, but I have two regular playing partners with the G5 (both with Aldila NVS 65 shafts) and I hit them and they feel identical, to me. I think the G5 has more shaft options, and obviously that will make a difference. The only real difference I can tell is that the G5 comes in different lofts G2 = 7.5, 8.5, 10 and the G5 7.5, 9, 10.5. There is a significant difference between the G2 fairways and the G5 fairways. I prefer the G5 fairways.
  22. I've used the same Cleveland 588 (53, 56) for the last 9 years and they seemed to have lost their pep. I'm considering replacing them and Wilson Tw5's are on sale for $39/each. Any thought's or experience with the Tw5's? I really like the Clevelands, but from address I expect the Wilson's wouldn't be a distraction. Or maybe general thoughts on replacing wedges (when/regrooving/etc)? Thanks Travis
