  1. Thanks for this! This is exactly the type of reply I was looking for. I appreciate all the replies actually. I probably should have been clearer in my original post that I've spent 3 years in Tampa, FL which is the biggest metro I've lived in. To me the traffic was absolutely insane so I think thats my biggest worry about Atlanta. Sure you can play year round, but if the traffic means you can only play Saturdays I''ll probably end up playing less overall due to other activities that compete for Saturday time. It sounds like I really need to get a local real estate golfer type and think hard about where to live. I'm hearing location, location, location in the replies. We dont have kids but maybe downtown isnt the best choice. At this point it sounds like we're headed that way. Like one of the posters said its hard to pass up promotions and increases in pay in this economy despite the higher cost of living.
  2. iacas, maybe this is its own thread but how about a simple/common fix for someone hitting ONLY pushes? Using an iron I align to my target and start the club square to my target. Out of 30 I'll hit 29 straight pushes (#10 from the book) and 1 straight shot. My self diagnosis is Im hitting the ball with an open club face with an inside/out swing. I've tried the suggestions from the book 1 at a time over the last 3 weeks but no luck. I hit pushes. (with driver I hit a right curve but Im not sure what to call it, it starts right and curves right at the end even more) I tried aiming right and that turns it into a right curving push. At this point I might just be over thinking it, any ideas? Thanks!
  3. Hi, I imagine this question would sound strange anywhere other than a forum full of golfers... My wife really wants to move to Atlanta from Wichita for a role change within her company, however I'm worried about how this will impact my newfound obsession with golf. She would be working inside the perimeter as its called... near the GP Building so I'm guessing in order to have a decent commute we're looking at living in downtown. I searched these forums for everything "atlanta" and "georgia" and got a lot of negative feedback. To summarize: Its expensive - $50+/round on weekends Its crowded - tee times are difficult, plauged with slow play The best courses are country clubs (initiation fee probably puts them out of reach) The best country clubs are invite only anyway Traffic makes driving to the courses tedious, esp driving from downtown So is this accurate? In Wichita I'm ~20 minutes away from 8-10 courses, sub $40 fees and rarely a need to make tee times. Am I in for golf heartbreak in Atlanta?
  4. FHopper, Can you post what you found out? I'm also looking to get fit in the vicinity of Wichita. I've been pondering just driving to KC... Thanks!
  5. I just started myself and had literally never touched a club before starting but for what its worth... I wish someone had explained to me: * what all the golf jargon meant earlier. The terms squaring, open and closed, toe and heel for example. * demonstration of the various grip types and showing me that the way you grip a putter or wedge isn't the same as a iron or driver. Maybe this is obvious to most and Im just dense but I didnt figure it out until my pro lesson. The pro actually said that I had a really decent swing and that it was my grip causing me to top the ball. (I was 10 finger/baseball griping the driver and irons) We worked on my grip first. Once he got me using the right grip for the club I saw instant improvement to my game.
  6. I'm also going to be in Maui for my honeymoon in a couple weeks... Despite having just picked up the game should I make a point to play The Plantation or The Bay? I'm staying at the Ritz anyway so its discounted. Would someone as new as myself find it enjoyable at all? Would my slow play just ruin some other guys day? Advice?
  7. I just played my first round over the weekend. I just picked up a driver for the first time a month ago and had only been to the range twice. I shot 138 over 18 ;) I thought that was pretty good considering I had never swung a club other than a driver prior to that! If you've been practicing I'm sure you'll do fine. Despite hitting nearly every shot from some hellish lies I had a blast. Just have fun and enjoy the experience. I did!
  8. Does your $400 include insurance? If so I would advise you to call and quote insurance on models you are interested in. I think you'll be suprised at what that costs. (include GAP insurance) To give you an idea my buddies '04 G35 runs $85/mo and he's 27 with a clean driving record. If you're under age 25 you'll easily pay double that per month for a '07. I second the opinion of buying a older/cheaper car until you can afford to outright buy something 1) Cheaper Insurance/Taxes 2) Being car poor sucks 3) Cars are depreciating at an incredible rate right now and you'll likely end upside down on it.
