  1. It wasn't a good idea. It felt really awkward, lol. Didn't hit very many shots trying this out. While I didn't really make any significant progress with the whole "divot" thing I did find out that if I don't remember to release the club, well taking a divot is the least of my worries!! I'm definitely going to post one as soon as I can hit the range with a friend who can record the proper angles for me!
  2. I'm going out tomorrow morning and plan to do some experimenting with ball position. Seems like a better idea vs tweaking the swing at this point.
  3. Yeah basically this. The problem I have with this, granted it's not a HUGE problem considering it's happened twice in the past 27 holes of golf I've played...but the problem I have with this is when I skull/blade the ball 20-30 yards past where I should be. When that happens I start to think about all kinds of things with my swing in regards to not taking divots and all that.
  4. Since making this post and watching a few things I believe I should have used the word Picking instead of Scooping. I don't feel like I'm losing distance on stuff or being "handsy" or "flippy" with my swing but I'll try and get a video posted sometime over the weekend. When I do make an effort, and it does require an effort for me to take a proper divot the difference in feeling is noticeable...I feel like the ball is being propelled more or something rather than just hit solid when I'm picking it clean. Maybe that makes sense, maybe not...I'm going to do some experimenting on the range and course!
  5. I guess I'd prefer to get in a habit/feel of striking the ball with my irons without a tee so I can translate that to my approach shots. Just something I do as I play more, like I said I'm a pretty big feel type player..some things just come naturally to me as I play more. Thank you for pointing out the terminology on scooping vs picking. Perhaps I used the wrong words in the title. I'm going to look into it more and get some video footage at the range this weekend!
  6. Going to the range this weekend and will get some video of the swing.
  7. Hmm...ya know I'm not sure to be completely honest because I'm not familiar with "flipping". If this helps explain the situation I am more likely to thin the ball vs doing anything else as far as mishits go.
  8. Right now I am teeing iron shots up on the par 3s..simply because I'm not comfortable/confident with everything again yet. When I start getting my "feel" back I won't tee up with iron shots.
  9. Finished up my 3rd round of 9 holes this past Wednesday after being away from Golf for a long time and had a few light bulb type moments while I was out there and after my round. Scooping vs Divots For as long as I can remember I've always been a scooper without really putting much thought into it. I think I've never really put much thought into it because I mostly play off feel. Playing off feel is fine and all that but I feel like I'm going to hit a wall somewhere and not continue to improve, and I really want to improve. My goal is to be a scratch golfer and the closest I've ever been is 2 over on my home course which is not that difficult. Since I'm coming back to the game after such a long absence I'm wondering if I could start tweaking things with the way I approach the game. What are some pros and cons of scooping vs divots? Example of me tweaking things Right now if I was on a fairway with a perfect beautiful lie my normal swing would scoop the ball up with either no or very minimal divot. I would have to really concentrate and think about striking down at the ball to get that good "pinch" or compression to take a nice divot. Would love to hear some feedback on this!
  10. Thanks for the clarification on that and this is a interesting thing to consider. I'm definitely going to be getting fitted but I'm most definitely not going to be picking out individual components and piecing my set together for a couple reasons, most notably because I simply don't have enough knowledge about everything. I've talked with the guy that will be doing my fitting several times now about different things and this is our plan as of right now. He knows I really like the Ping i500s, but he also knows that I really want to hit/feel some of the Mizuno's as well, and on top of all that he knows I really have a thing for Titleist as well! Soooo I'm gonna hit a lot of shots with several different brands and see what the data says and how I feel with each club/brand. At the end of the day I'm going to select whatever set gives me the best opportunity to hit consistent/precision shots!!
  11. Don't even know what it means so will be sticking to my plan. Lol!!!
  12. Anyone have any experience with these? Accurate, useful, pile of garbage, waste of time? Was introduced to one of these through a friend and just got back to playing again and a few things about it did peak my interest. Club path, hand path and plane are my #1 things I'm interested in because it's the most important to me. Naturally I'm a over the top kind of right handed player...so swinging inside/out is very important to me, and it's quite obvious when I forget about doing it. Anyone got any suggestions on this?
  13. I'll definitely be back with the results and pictures of the whole new iron setup! Irons, putter, wedges, driver, fairway woods/hybrids...Not all at once but over time that is the order of replacements being made!
  14. I won't lie...I'm getting pretty hyped up about it all, and you pretty much just listed all the clubs I'm interested in that are on my radar! I've already felt the difference between Forged vs non Forged but I didn't get a chance to hit some of the forged Mizuno's and people say they are pretty special so I've gotta get that done when I go back!
  15. Feel was out of this world compared to what I currently have, also the sound was too. More distance but that's because they are lofted lower and they are new, shiny, and look amazing compared to my oversized 10-12 year old irons. To be completely honest I didn't spend a lot of time hitting so we didn't get into dispersion and all that, but when I go back for the full fitting session I'm sure we will.
  16. I've made a list on what is most important to me, plan on bringing that list in when I go for my fitting. Consistency, feel, control, precision, work-ability. Honestly not that concerned with distance and always have been a feel type golfer. I do have some favorite brands as far as personal preference goes but I'm ultimately going to buy what I perform the best with, that's the plan anyway.

  18. Hey all! Returning player here who has been away from the game for probably somewhere close to 8 years give or take! I'm currently using a set of Mizuno MX-100s and I'm probably way overdue for a upgrade leaning towards more of a serious/competitive approach with whatever I end up getting. I went to a Golf Central shop this past weekend to have the Mizuno's re-gripped and while I was there I got lucky and was able to hit a few shots in their fitting studio. It wasn't a full blown fitting session as I told them I wasn't buying that day but was curious how some of the new equipment feels these days. I was blown away. I don't have an official handicap again yet as I've only played 2 rounds of 9 holes since coming back to the game but each of those rounds I sat at 5 over. I use to be about 3-5 handicap back in the day when I was playing a lot, this was when I was around 18-22 years old, I'm 32 now so I know a lot has changed but I was able to remember the things I've learned and hit some good shots in my recent rounds. A few things I knew I wanted when selecting the iron heads I ended up hitting were as follows.. Compact Head Forged Shot Shaping I only hit two brands, Ping i500s and Callaway Apex, both are forged and both felt great..like completely a night and day difference vs what I've been hitting in all my time playing golf. I wanted to hit more irons but also didn't want to use up a lot of the guys time since I wasn't buying that day and didn't schedule an actual fitting appointment. Some other brands I'm curious about are Mizuno and Titleist, I was told the sweetspot on the Titleist is literally the size of a dime so Titleist may be out of the question completely at the moment. I hit the ball decently but I don't strike the ball pure every single time so I'm staying away from a full blown blade/muscleback set for now. I was wondering if I could get some input on what to look for when going through the whole fitting process these days? I'm pretty set on the Ping i500s, they felt amazing and they also look super sleek and I like that a lot!!! I know I want a Forged iron after hitting some now and I also want control/precision, can't wait to see some input on this! Thanks in advance!!!
