I started golfing last August and have taken 10 lessons between then and now. I have a season pass at my local course (Mount Hood) and i have already been out six times this season so far. My issue is that all of my lessons were indoors hitting into a net and not much else(i push shots right, bad alignment, never realized this hitting into a net). I feel i learned the fundamentals of the full swing and i am struggling to take it to the course. I am looking for an instructor that works outside, or even someone i could pay to walk the 18 holes with me to point out things i should already know. Anyone have any recommendations? I am North of Boston (Melrose) Thank you, Keith

So the wife finally caved in and said i could put something in the garage that i could hit into. I was thinking a nice net similar to the ones you see in the back of most golf stores. What is the most cost effective way to do this? Has anyone done anything similar that can offer some advice? Would also need a mat of some sort to hit off , of course. Thanks all!

I started golfing back in August of last year and i have now taken ten lessons. We have worked hard on the fundamentals and setup and i feel confident when i get up there now. The group of friends i play with tell me i actually look like i know how to golf now which is nice to hear. But i have a problem. I slow down the group terribly because i take far too long between shots. I take too many practice swings, when i get to the ball i run through my fundamental checklist and re-set far too many times. What ends up happening is i over exagerate each fundamental each time i re-set until i am completely out of position and then i swing all arms. During my lessons my ball striking is great and i don't hesitate..Any drills or swing thoughts to speed me up? All help is appreciated!

I started golfing last August, first time ever...shot between 100 and 110 for most rounds, a few outliers. This winter i have been taking lessons, i hope i be a 90's shooter this season. Feeling much more comfortable with my swing, can't wait for this season. Signed up for a season pass as a local course 30 seconds from my house, going to get ALOT of golf in this year!

I shot 18 yesterday and brought a small notebook to jot down thoughts throughout the round. I found a reoccurring theme surrounding most of my duffed shots...uneven lies. I had multiple shots where my feet were above the ball or below the ball and i played these shots terribly. When it was below i kept hitting grounders and when the ball was above i kept hitting it a few inches behind the ball, ripping out a huge divot and hitting the ball very fat and not far at all. I also had 4 or 5 shots that i needed to keep low because of trees and i couldn't keep it low to the ground I am not sure if it were mental or mechanical, but what are everyone's thoughts on these types of shots? Thanks as always

Planning it out was one thing...executing it was another. Was having trouble stringing together consecutive shots to put myself into my "planned" position. It wasn't too bad, but i did learn that my short game needs a ton of work. When my approach shot came up short, i suffered and lost a ton of strokes. Thanks for all the suggestions and input everyone

I felt comfortable enough at the practice tee that i used the 3 wood on some of the longer par 4's and the par 5's. Felt great and i hit 3/6 fairways that i used the club on and didn't hit any in the woods or put myself in a position where i had to pitch out

Just shot my sixth round ever yesterday, have played all six at the same course. Shot a 100 even but ended up in the sand 3 times and it took me 8 shots to get out of it. All were greenside bunkers and i couldnt for the life of me get it up and down. Also had 39 putts (and five 3 putts), how does that compare for a 30+ handicap? Only had one penalty stroke for an unplayable lie so that is down from my usual three to four per round. Questions: 1.) Suggestions of getting out of the sand? I always think im going to over shoot it and i end up hitting it to the lip then the ball mocks me and rolls back to my feet. 2.) Short game drills i can do in my back yard? I have a yard about 30 yards across so i have some room but want something fun to keep me out there for hours on end. 3.) I have been chipping with my pitching wedge (45 degrees), my next club up from that is SW(56 degrees). What should a beginner be using? Thanks for all the help guys, Keith

my hybrid 3 , i can hit it around 190 to 205 and much more often in the fairway than my 3 wood

I am becoming more and more comfortable with my hybrids ( i have a 3, 4 & 5 in place of my long irons). I struggle a bit with my 3 and 5 wood and REALLY struggle with my driver. Is it better to try to work my way up to the driver? The length difference between my 3 hybrid and 3 wood is about 4 inches. What accounts for my inability to hit the woods but ability to hit the hybrids solidly? (i push slice frequently) I have been taking lessons and my instructor told me to keep using my 3 hybrid off the tee but we haven't really discussed moving up in clubs

On top of that, is it a good idea to map out your round before it starts? For all 18 holes to have an idea what clubs i could like to us to get me into my favorite approach shot? Meaning if i see that hole 5 is a 472 par 5 I would plan on hitting a 3 hybrid off the tee, then a 6 iron, after these two shots, i would like to be around 125 to 135 yards out for my 3rd shot. Is this overkill? Will it lead to problems once my first shot misses the "plan"?

It seems that longer par 4's in which i cannot get within my comfortable distance i will have use a longer club for my approach. I don't plan on purposely laying up so that my 3rd shot at a par 4 is 130 yards out

Hi, Very new, started golfing in July, have only broken 100 once thus far but i have a question. I feel very comfortable from around 120 to 130 yards. Is it a good idea to try to create this opportunity for myself on every hole possible? For example] A 317 yard par 4, i could hit a 3 wood and hit it 210 yards and get to a slightly uncomfortable distance or i could hit a 4 hybrid to about a distance of 125 to 135 yards out into my favorite shot. What about on a 480 yard par 5 that i cannot possibly reach in two shots. Do i make sure my first two shots get to about 125 yards out from the pin even if it means my second shot is a 6 or 7 iron? Thank you

Hi all, 27 years oldf from Massachusetts, decided to take up golfing the middle of July (was given a set as a wedding present). I played a few nine hole courses before i decided lessons were the way to go. I have had four lessons now and i feel i have definately benefited from them. On the same course i have played five times now, shot a 117, 109, 107, 101 and 99. Signed up for more lessons now too, can't wait to continue playing. Only regret is i waited this long to start

I personally enjoyed this book. It was a bit slow at the beginning but when you get to the middle and finish it you will be in a completely different mindset than when you began it. I am also very new, i started golfing in July for the first time ever...so i completely recommend this to any beginner who is struggling with the mental side of the game

"The Little Red Book" (and His Other Books) by Harvey Penick

Great read from start to finish. The book being setup by small individual stories made it a great read, every insightful.
