Which Taylormade 3 wood?
mrbillinoc replied to titleistglfer's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
A couple of weeks ago I picked up a new Burner 3 wood at Roger Dunn for $179 new and really love it. -
Wow...could you imagine if he was at least in the TOP 20? He would be totaly un-beatable!

This weeks tour stats shows Tiger ranks 168th on the PGA Tour...not bad for the #1 player in the world, eh?

Scotty Cameron, whats the big deal?
mrbillinoc replied to PBCgolfer's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I use a Scotty "Red-X" mallet and there is NO question you can feel what a difference there is when you are using a well-balanced putter! -
I just went to the new Burner...simply AWESOME!!! There was so much "buzz" about this club I just had to try it. Not only is it definately long, but it is just effortless to hit! I loved it soo much I tried out the Burner 3 wood.....it's in my bag too! One more thing...I got it at COSTCO for only $249. If this club was the same price as most others in the $399 range I would STILL have bought it...it's that good!

Need Help, Getting a New Driver
mrbillinoc replied to bflat450's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I agree....definately get checked out before you buy. I bought a new "Burner" on Saturday and was fortunate that I got to demo it at a driving range near here that is actually a large lake. They use "floating" balls and you hit to island greens. I was hitting a 9.5 Sumo regular shaft...and hitting it well. I played a week ago with a friend who had just bought a 10.5 regular shaft Burner and was crushing the ball straight as an arrow. Even though I was hitting the ball LONG, it just seemed like the ball flight was way too high..... Boy was I wrong!!! At the "lake" I hit a 9.5 and a 10.5 side by side and there is NO DOUBT I was hitting the 10.5 longer since I could see the ball "plop" in the water. I'm just wondering if a lot of people (like myself) make the mistake of THINKING they are hitting the ball too high, when it fact it is actually the "optimim launch angle" they should be at? -

Thanks for the link..... You realize now it's YOUR fault I'm going to buy one TODAY!!! -
Played today with a guy who has this putter...what a GREAT feel to it!!!

New TaylorMade "Burner" Driver...WOW!!!

Took my new Burner out for a spin today...absolutely CRUSHED the ball all day! Hit every fairway! My swing speed was measured at 94, so the regular shaft works just great! One of my playing partners walked right into the pro shop after we finished and bought one on the spot! He was hitting an R7 460 in 9.5, but almost flew his drives when he hit my 10.5 Burner. The 3 wood is a dream as well...easy to hit, and the ball gets up real quick!!! -

Bought my new Burner today....spent an hour at the range after and am in LUV with it!!! Got the 10.5 regular shaft....paid $249 at Costco. I liked the driver so much I stopped at a golf shop and bought the Burner 3 wood. They don't sell them at Costco, but the guy discounted it from $199 to $179. Can't wait to take them "dancing" on the course tomorrow!!! -
Be it woods OR irons I found the best way to tell was by "sharing" clubs with different friends I play with. During the course of a round it gives me the opprtunity to hit different clubs in a "real world" scenario. Then...if you find something that is "magic"...then go buy 'em!

I REALLY appreciate all your comments!

Thanks for the input guys! I was definately hitting the 10.5 higher that my 9.5 degree...but I was consistently 10 to 15 REAL yards longer with the Burner. With the 10.5 I was a bit concerned about the ball flight, even with the yardage gain, if I was hitting INTO a wind. I never pull or push a driver....or DRAW the ball. It either goes DEAD straight, or tails off with a slight fade, but never a slice. My irons are regular flex and everything from my 3 iron down to the wedge ALWAYS files only one way...dead-straight.

I'm hoping to get a chance to go this weekend and get fitted, but I thought I'd toss this question out and get your feed-back. Even though I can't give you my "specifics" yet, I'd really appreciate your thoughts? I'm a 6 handicap, 52, 5'9", 165 lbs. I am going to "guess" my swing speed is low to mid 90's. Right now I'm hitting a Sumo2 9.5 with an Aldila NVS 65-R regular shaft. When I swing SMOOTH and easy the ball is dead-straight. If I try to give it a little "extra" it is still straight, then tails off with a fade. I tried a friend's new "Burner" the other day and consistantly out-drove my Sumo. His club is a 10.5 degree with a regular shaft (the 50gram) shaft that comes in the new Burners. Same results...easy swing...LONG and straight...harder swing....straight, then a slide fade at the end. When hitting my IRONS they always go DEAD-STRAIGHT. Two questions: 1. What would happen if I was swinging a STIFF shaft? 2. Since the new Burner is what TaylorMade describes as a "high-launch" club, should I go with the 9.5.....even though I was outdriving my normal shots with his 10.5 ? Once again, I realize a proper club-fitting would address these questions, but there are a LOT of very knowlegable people on this board, so your thoughts would be VERY much appreciated!! Thanks, Bill

New TaylorMade "Burner" Driver...WOW!!!
mrbillinoc replied to mrbillinoc's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
A question if I may? I’ve been hitting a SUMO2, 9.5 degree, with an Aldila NVS-65R regular shaft....and have NO complaints. My partner’s new Burner was a 10.5 with the regular stock 50 gram shaft that comes on the club. Fairway after fairway I would hit one ball with my club, then 1 ball with his...and the Burner was an HONEST 10 to 15 yards further....every time!!! My question is this...on Taylormade’s web-site they describe their Burner as a “high-launch” club. There is no doubt that when I was hitting my friend’s club (10.5) the ball flight was much higher than my driver (9.5)...but I was still out-driving my SUMO2. Does it make sense that a 9.5 Burner would actually go further...taking into consideration carry AND roll? -

Another friend that played with us the other day also tried out our friend's Burner. He just called me and told me he just bought one....at COSTCO for $249. I never would have thought to check there???? -

Klew, that's a great idea! My office is on 5 exits away from the Islands. Those "floater" golf balls always feel a bit funny, but since I would be hitting both degrees of drivers from the same spot with the same balls it should give me a fair picture. (for thoses of you who might be wondering, the "Islands" is a driving range that is a huge lake with "island" greens you hit to.) -

My friend's Burner was a 10.5 regular shaft. My SUMO2 is a 9.5 with an Aldila NVS 65-R shaft. I noticed on Taylormade's web-site they designate the Burner as a "high-launch" club. I'm just wondering what my experience would have been if I were hitting a 9.5 Burner? For those of you who have a new Burner...what was the loft of your previous driver...and do you find the ball-flight a little higher with your Burner? The reason for my question is that if the Burner is DESIGNED for higher flight, I'm wondering how far I could have hit the ball if I tried a 9.5? I know there are launch-monitors, but nothing really compares to standing on a tee-box on a course you play all the time. -
I've been using my SUMO2 since the day they came out and love it...no complaints! but....Sunday I played with a friend who just got a new TaylorMade "Burner". It was a 10.5 with a regular shaft, so I thought I'd give it a try. Hit a great tee shot with my club, then teed-up another ball and swung his Burner. BAM!!! 15 yards past my ball!!! Now remember, I didn't say I hit a "good" shot with my driver...I hit a GREAT shot with my driver...and was still 15 yards shy of the ball I hit with his Burner! Just to make sure, I hit it 4 more times during the day...swinging easy...and CRUSHED the ball! Anyone else hit the new "Burner" yet?

Oh, and as far as the Club Championship? Let's just say the 'ol saying "You drive for show & putt for dough" is STILL true!!! .....maybe I should invest in a Nike putter???

I thought I'd share a messege I also recieved from Bob Wood: Bill: I am so glad you got your club in time. When we saw your note it kind of crystallized everything that we were going through and the opportunity we had to make this situation easier for our customers. We really wanted to make this happen for you, and the fact that we did literally made my day. I hope the new stick serves you well, and that you win your flight this weekend. My thanks to Travis and Beth for making this happen. The best thing that can happen from this is that we cement the relationships we’ve started through our concern and service. If we earn positive word of mouth from people like you, that is worth a million press releases or ads. Thanks for being understanding and thanks for being a great Nike Golf customer. With best regards, Bob Wood President Nike Golf

Nike Golf.....UNBELIEVABLE!!! Let me tell you a story...... Weeks ago I heard about the “Recall” on the Nike SUMO 2 drivers. As you would expect, I was a bit "disappointed"....especially since our annual Club Championship was right around the corner and I was going into it WITHOUT a driver!!! I had been “politely” asked by the membership to “refrain” from using my SUMO 2 since there was a question regarding it’s conforming to the USGA. A reporter from a golf industry newspaper called “The Tour Van” heard of my situation and contacted Nike Golf. On March 20th I got a call from Beth G., Nike’s Public Relations Manager in Oregon. Beth told me that Nike had heard about my “situation” and wanted to do everything they could to help me. She told me she was going to have me a replacement driver by Friday, since the tournament was Mar. 24 & 25. I told Beth that I really appreciated the call and her concern, but given the tournament was literally 4 days away that would be impossible! Beth said to leave to her and she would make it happen. About an hour later I get a call from Travis T. in Fort Worth, Texas. Turns out that Travis is the guy that makes Tiger’s clubs, Chad Campbell’s clubs, KJ Choi’s, and the rest of the Nike Tour Staff players! I had changed the shaft on my driver to a different make (just my preference) as well as the grip. Travis took all this info down and said “leave it to me”. On Friday, March 23, a messenger shows up at my office here in California...with my NEW DRIVER!!!...including the SAME shaft and grip I had installed on my original!!! Now, as if my head isn’t spinning enough, I get contacted by Bob Wood...the PRESIDENT of Nike Golf!!! He wanted to make sure I had received my new driver and that I was happy with it. I told him “I hope you guys treat TIGER this good!!!” Bob was very nice and wanted me to know that the CUSTOMER was Nike’s FIRST concern and that they were glad they got the opportunity to help me. WHATEVER product it may be, I have NEVER been so overwhelmed at the treatment I was given! I would like to PUBLICLY say this to NIKE GOLF.... Even if your company had NOT been able to pull off this “miracle” of getting me a new club in time for my tournament....which you DID....your sheer effort and concern has won me as a customer for life!!!

Best of the New Drivers??? Is there really just one? This weekend I played and between the four of us we had the following drivers in our bags: My SUMO 2 Callaway FT-i New Cobra Speed Driver Callaway FT-5 It was a real slow day, so we were all hitting multiple drives and almost every hole trying all the clubs. And the winner was?............I don't know! I think most of the new clubs made today are so good that it's all going to come down to just one's personal preference. After hitting 4 tee shots on each of the 14 holes with four different drivers I am now convinced that the "Best Driver" on the market doesn't exist...the only thing that matters is what feels best in your hands!

You wouldn't buy a Callaway because it has "a real ugly headcover"???
