exactly!! thats what happens with me, I get so caught up with trying to put the club on the plane and getting my right shoulder to go down with my arms on the down swing that it just creates my right shoulder spinning out. when i focus on just shifting my weight first onto the left side the ball contact is great, it also feels as though my right shoulder is going down plane as well. hopefully it is the right feeling.

thanks for replies, is the shift what makes it drop into the slot?
-
how important is it to shift the weight on the downswing onto your left side and onto the left leg? i was practicing and just worked on shifting my weight at the start of the downswing and the shots i hit were incredible, ball makes a totatlly different sound off the club as well.

ON the downswing i have a tendancy to hit at the ball and try to force the club on a particular path like i am hitting the ball resulting in the clubhead coming to the ball from the outside and all kinds of problems occur. i was practicing tonight and realized that if i free the tension so that i can FEEL THE CLUBHEAD swinging then the club hits the ball and the ball just takes off. It almost feels like there is no effort to hit at the ball but instead as the club is swinging through the ball I am losing control of hitting it because the head is swinging freely. IS THIS THE CORRECT FEELING?

on the downswing all pros are in the same position, as you start the down swing the correct feeling be like your right elbow is coming close to your body almost as though the right elbow is coming down to the right hip then brushing your belt, see video below from pro chip beck http://www.v1golfacademy.com/library...me=Chip%20Beck

not sure if correct but i am trying to add more body to the swing instead of all arma. this is the drill i am using and please feel free to coment. i try to imagine getting to the top of my swing and pretend that there is pole going through my hands and into my RIGHT SHOULDER. in order for my hands to start down my right shoulder must start down with it in sequence, it makes me feel like the arms are synchronizing with my right shoulder as long as my right shoulder goes down towards the ball like my hands. . check this out, thing of beauty.

is this the move??? i have no problem doing it in slow motion, when i try to do it regular speed i cant keep the right elbow close to my hip on the downswing. trying to get in the slot, ignore the dipping of my head as i am exaggerating the move.

I am not a pro but i can say my misses were hooks and slices with woods, not that every ball was like that just when i missed it. i would swing before by turning and using my arms to hit the ball. since i took my arms out of it and let gravity and the pivot do everything the consistency is incredible, great ball striking. maybe someone can better describe this feeling. when people used to say let the arms fall i mis-interpreted it. i would let my arms fall from the top of the swing for a brief second then tried to hit it which resulted in a jerk motion to ball off plane. it wasnt until i wathced brians episode 3 on you tube and watched just about all the pros on tv and saw their arms falling from the top all the way through the ball. the best way to describe it is get to the top of the swing and let the arms fall right down with gravity and use your pivot to make it happen at the ball. i used to watch these pros and say "how the heck do they get the club in that position in the downswing ??????" it was a mystery to me for years and now i finally found out that its because they are not PUTTING IT in that positon in the downswing, it is falling into that position!!!! this is only one way to do it. brian says there are others, pulling or pushing it down. i have hit thousands, and thousands and thousands of balls and tried pulling, pushing, hitting down, from the inside, and the best feeling i have ever had is letting that club FALL to the inside. please comment brians episode 3 : http://youtube.com/watch?v=ndTQy1Ek2q8 example of adam and tiger letting the club fall. http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZecViQxUwss

stuart appleby downswing plane????
moreira85 replied to moreira85's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
thanks for the reply, i didnt mean a one or two plane swing, i just meant whether the club should be swung down on the same plane like stuart does here. -
i am a 13.9 handicap, i tend to come across it sometimes. when you are swinging the club to the top of the swing, on the downswing should you try to retrace the line that you swung the club back on, for example if you there is a circle drawn on the plane should you swing up this circle then back down on the same line????
-
this has been working really well for me, i have been working on it hard, it will take some time as when i get my woods in my hand since they are longer i tend to want to go over the top of it like my old swing. i am trying really hard to keep that left arm swinging close to my body on the downswing and not let it get out in front of that imaginary line drawn from my chin to the ground. Tell you one thing, this definetly creates great ball striking. Is there a such thing as swinging that left arm too close to your body on the downswing??? (looks like Vijays left arm almost brushes his pants on the downsing) VIJAY

thanks, i need to take video of hitting balls. i know i come over the top, i try to hit from inside and i end up hitting hooks. any tips on getting on the right place on the downswing?

SORRY I WAS NOT HITTING A BALL AS I WAS IN MY BACKYARD. after taping this then watching it i think i take it too inside because i am not hinging my wrist up at the half way point and the result is whipping it back into the deadzone which results in over the top. looks like my butt end of the club is pointing way outside of the target line three quarters through the backswing. PLEASE HELP THIS STUFF IS ADDICTING. I WOULD BET ANYONE THIS CAME IS MORE ADDICTING THAN DRUGS!!!!

RED SOX FAN HERE, thanks for the tip, i have been practing this game for 6 years now trying to hit the ball from the inside. i tried your tip in the past trying to hit the ball at 7 o clock but the problem was i would try to hit from the inside by coming over the top and hitting it from the inside and i would hit hooks. i have found that keeping my left arm close to my body has worked brilliantly. thanks for the tips and keep them coming. its like good ball strikers arent telling the secret!!!!! shhhh

hey thanks!!!! i love this analogy. so basically at address a line drawn from the chin to the ground and try to swing the left arm down between your body and that line without getting outside that line????? i like that better than my analogy. i will have to try that. i love this game. my left arm close to the body on the downswing was resulting in great ball striking.

i have a question about the downswing. i was trying something at the range tonight and man did it work great. when they say you have to hit the ball from the inside, that is if you want to make consistent ball striking, what should that feel like? at the range tonight i was working on hitting it from the inside and in order to do this i felt like as i started the downswing my left arm was swinging down close to my body. for example as i swing down my left arm is coming close to my body like it is brusing my belt buckle on the way down ( it really isnt brusing my belt buckle i am just trying to describe what if feels like) is this correct???

i used to constantly try to swing the club from the inside and I kept swinging over the top,(not a severe over the top but one that effected consistency), my arms would take over and get off plane. I recently now try to feel like my arms do nothing in the swing, I swing the club back and on the transition into the downswing i uncoil my hips and shoulders, I try to feel like the uncoiling of the shoulders are what is swinging the club and do nothing with my arms like they are just along for the ride.. NOT SURE IF IT IS RIGHT BUT I HAVE BEEN HITTING IRONS AND ESPECIALLY WOODS DEAD STRAIGHT. ANY TIPS ON THE FEELING OF THE DOWNSWING?

I have to completely agree with Titleism, this will be my 6th season playing golf and it took my 5 years to figure out this move from the top, I kept trying to put the club in position and swing from the inside. I think the biggest problem with this game is that people get to the top of the swing and then try to put the club in the right position in the donwswing using their arms. I had the same mistake for years. It was not until my 5th year i finally figured it out!!!! when you get to the top of your swing your arms do nothing to initiate the downswing. I agree with titleism, your forearms have to stay completely relaxed through the swing and when you get to the top the unwinding of the lower body and uncoiling is what gets you into the right position. Your arms never hit at the ball, the club and arms are simply just along for the ride exactly like a whip, when you feel the lag from uncoiling you will consistently hit ball after ball straight. It is tough concept to grab but when you get it you will know it. any comments?

you know you hear everything from restrict your hips to turn your hips!! I have always turned my hips, I am assuming it is OKAY to turn your hips and turn everything into a posted right leg as long as the right leg is stable. As you turn the hips the left knee should draw inward towards the right correct?
-
When make the turn in the backswing, should you try to stabilize your hips and turn with your upper body to create resistance or should you be turning your hips as well in the turn???? I know they say your shoulders should turn 90degrees and hips 45degrees but should you try not to turn the hips?

funny to see i am not the only one, we lived in a condo and in my office i have high ceilings, i used to take the mattres off of my futon and hit full shots into it. I had put a hole in the wall (which i did fix, a chip in one of my old guitars, and scuffs in the wall. we no longer live there needless to say and our new house has low ceilings. I now only chip and putt indoors!!!!!

I have a question about the rules, i have not read much on this forum about rules. When I play with friends it seems as though they just drop a ball when they lose one then say they shot 78. If someone hits a ball and slices or hooks it into the woods with no red stakes or OB stakes and cannont find their ball what is the ruling???? isnt the correct ruling to go back to the tee and re tee another ball hitting 3?
