I just got my new driver. I can't hit it for sh*t. It feels so much weirder than most drivers. I'm always topping it. Is there anything that can prevent topping it?

Keeping your head down
Teeing it up higher

Did you hit the driver before purchasing it?

Keeping your head down

When I tee it up higher I pop it up. And no I didnt hit it, but right after I got it I went to the driving range and hit it great. Just when it comes down to the real thing.... not so great.

Make sure you are set up correctly and focus on not moving your head at all during the swing. Since you pop it up when you tee it higher, tee the ball so it sits at the middle of the clubface.

Agree, it's all mental. I think the best way to overcome this is to find a routine on the range that works for hitting that club (ball position, tee height, distance to ball, etc). The confidence you get from a repeatable routine on the range will translate to confidence with the club on the course.

Be patient!

i sometimes will go all arms keeping my body down, so I dont hop up. You lose distance but your more likely to hit it straight.

Definitely mental. I went on a streak where I couldn't hit a drive off the middle of the clubface(of my driver) for a two weeks.

What I did to stop it? : Take about a 1/12 swing for a few balls. Then a 1/8th swing for a bit. Then a 1/6th swing for a bit. Then a 1/4th, 1/2, then a 3/4 then full.

It really helps you focus a little more.

Also, slow down your backswing for a while - maybe that will help.

It's all mental. It's only natural to want to see where that new driver puts the ball. Pretend you are driving a nail into the back of the ball. You'll stay down and through the shot.

I do this from time to time as well.

It's always a function of me swaying or sliding off the ball during my swing.

I fix it by keeping my head still and rotating around it....I also focus on keeping my left shoulder relaxed and getting full extension on the backswing and through.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
