Hi! I just recently switched to a set of chrome Titleist 735.CM and noticed while shopping around that most of the used clubs had browned faces. I found of set that was in mint condition and don't really want my clubs to look like that. What's the cause of the brown marks and is it preventable? Sorry, but I've never had a set of forged chrome irons before. thanks in advance!

I am not totally sure, but I think that the browned face is inevitable. However it really depends on how much you play. If the marks are on the face then it is just wear from years of hitting balls in the same spot. If I had to guess, it is just the chrome wearing off. The performance of the club won't be bad by any means, unless the grooves are worn down to the point that they won't grab the ball effectively.

My old set of forged clubs was starting to show this kind of wear. Although outside of the wedge and 8-iron you couldn't really notice. If it does happen and you like the clubs, there are many places that can refinish the head and resharpen the grooves.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.
