I use the DF 330 mallet.  I am quite satisfied with it, and even polished the sole to a nice mirror-like shine.  Pretty good feedback, as I can tell when I toe or heel a putt by the feel.  I can get a pretty nice roll with it.  I putt straight back, straight through.

I use one like the one pictured in this post .  To me the sound and feel of the ball off the putter face are more about the ball than the putter.  Soft cover ball, soft feel and sound off the putter.  Hard cover balls "click".  Mine has the black insert but I understand there was a green insert model as well. One insert is supposed to be softer than the other but danged if I can remember which is which.  When it rains and the putter gets soaked the insert turns gray and swells above the surrounding metal, doesn't seem to permanently hurt the putter though.

I prefer the 330 insert over a smoother metal face (even shallow milled) but would prefer a deep milled metal face over the 330 insert.  It is a light putter and works for me on fast greens but I would prefer a heavier putter on slower greens (less than around 8.5).  Prefer in my case means don't care enough to make a change but I guess in theory would be nice.

I think so.  I paid around $20 for mine a few years ago, and would sell it for the same amount today

Before the current Scotty came along, I had a 330 with the green insert. It was softer than the standard black insert. There was actually a third option (blue) which was the firmest of the three. You didn't see many of them back then, and I haven't seen one since they first came out. My 330 was really solid, but I had a hard time on slow greens at times. Sometimes wish I still had it.
