Went to a Callaway demo day last week and I'll probably get a new set of XR's irons soon.

The thing is I'm playing at the moment Taylor Made Burner 2.0 irons with steel 85g regular shafts and the guy from Callaway advised me to get steel stiff shafts.

Now, I'm 6'2", 42 years old and not getting any younger. My swing speed with a 7 iron is around 85 mph.

I'm an 18 handicap and play, if I'm lucky, once a week.

My question is, stiff or regular? Not sure my back can handle stiff. Is that an issue?

Any help would be appreciated.

If you're in Lisbon, Portugal, could  you get a fitting on the irons? That would be the best way to do it.

From your clubhead speed, I'd say stiff would probably work.

Another big factor besides clubhead speed is transition from top. If it's quick, this would tend toward stiff; if it's smooth, this would tend toward regular.

As far as strain on the back goes, XR stock shafts are pretty light. The steel True Temper Speed Step 80 shaft weighs 88 grams in regular, 89 in stiff; the stiff also has a middle kickpoint, which would keep ball a bit lower on launch then the regular, with a low kick.

If you get too light and too flexible a shaft, you can have control problems.

Here's the Callaway link on the XR irons.
