I was the same way in college. What I did was to take a golf class at my university. It is usually with about 25 other people, but the guy would go back and forth while we were hitting and tell you a tip or two which would usually help tremendously. They also go over putting and chipping which is a huge part of the game. When I took it at UF, I think you got 1 or 2 rounds of golf plus you got to hit balls twice a week. I even took the class again two semesters later to work on my swing some more. A year after that I was able to get into the eighties which I'm working on getting back down to now. The reason for this or to have a friend show you some pointers is that you don't want to ingrain bad habits early.

Need recommendation for a 14th club.

My mistake. That's one thing I really want to be able to do in the next year is get on there in 2. Currently even when I hit my 3 wood about 240, and if I am 200 to 220 away, I will usually lay up and try to get close to the flag with a sand wedge so that I can have a chance at a birdie. I used to always go for it but then I'd usually turn a par or bogey into a triple bogey. I would still probably reccomend a 3 wood that you can hit off the fairway which is tough to do, but you seem to have most of the other distances in your bag. -

How are you getting to a par 5 in 2 if your driver seems to be about 220 average and then your next club is about 200 with roll? Just curious. I would say a 3wood that you can hit off the fairway if you can hit it straight and consistently enough that'll get you more distance for the longer par 5s. -
Yes I think that would've been the right thing to do from the beginning. I'll see how they hit and they may need to do that anyways because I hear bending cast irons more than 2 degrees is tough, so they may break a couple of them and need to do so. I am picking them up tomorrow and will hit them on what ever the plastic thing is to show that I am hitting it flush in the center. If that doesn't work, I may speak with a distict manager or taylor made directly.

It's actually glazed ham and if you have a good enough press you can take out the toaster oven which is the preferred method. You'll also want to lightly brush olive oil on the crust, press till it's golden and cut it diagonally in half. It also doesn't hurt to marinate the pork in mojo. -

That's a bargain. I paid 5 and change just for the sandwhich. -

LMAO... But I had the cheese extended a 1/2 inch by melting it and then put aftermarket pickles on it, and they didn't charge me any extra to press it. -

Sounds good. In most of Miami, it's made with ham, roasted pork, swiss cheese and pickles on cuban bread with mustard. It is usually heated in a toaster oven for a bit and then pressed to about an inch to inch and a half thick. Delicious. Supposedly some serve it with salami but I've never had it. -

Ok. I'll start. I had a delicious cuban sandwhich in Miami. -
Should I consider trying to make it as a professional?

i just posted about a standard set I bought which weren't right for me. They are changing the lie angle, shaft length and grips. I hit a ping that was almost perferct as far as fitting for me and I was hitting them great. Also, you paid a few hundred for a set that's now fitted for you= not a waste of money at all. I can't wait to get mine back this week. -
As long as you still go regardless, that's what happens. I usually ask a couple of people, but if they're not reliable I always go by my schedule. I am going to set the time and pick the course that I want to play on. I'm a calm guy but I'd be pissed driving 45 minutes or more to accomodate others to have them cancel. If it's someone reliable I'll play wherever. I've actually met playing partners by playing as a single. Either way it's a lack of respect to set any appointment and not cancel with adequat notice if you know you can't make it.

I went to golfsmith about 3 months ago and spent about 2 hours with their "expert" hitting different irons. I ended up purchasing taylor made 2.0s which helped bring my game into the mid to high 90s from the 106 range. I was really excited about them compared to my old set but a buddy i play with who's a 6 handicap kept telling me that they sold me the wrong set because of my height. I took the set to 2 other shops and they confirmed that I was sold a standard set when I'm 6'4" which is way off. They both said that the shaft should be 3/4 inches longer and the lie needs to be 3 degrees upright. I went back and spoke with a manager and basically told him that I am not an expert and that is why I went there figuring with the price that I'm paying for that set and with the time I spent with the guy that they should've sold me the right set. He ended up measuring me and had me hit the hard plastic plate with a ping that was 3 degrees upright and 1/2 inch longer and I was hitting that perfectly in the middle of the white tape that they put on the bottom. All the balls were going straight with a nice tragectory. He actually said he would cover the cost of extending them, changing the degrees and putting oversized grips on them. I am going to check them on the plate to make sure that I am hitting in the middle when i get them because I hear that it's difficult to bend the lie more the 1.5 degrees or 2 and being a cast iron, that they may break by bending them but that's on them if they do. I am getting them back this thursday and looking forward to hitting them. This has caused me not to discontinue making a future purchase there. Hopefully with the right fitted clubs and more practice I can start to get back into the 80s.

I would say go for your dream. You don't want to have regrets. I'm not saying not to listen to your mom's advice but that's her advice, not the path that you have to follow. I'd reccomend to be realistic, but it's also not going to happen unless you go for it. I would also, like others have mentioned, work at a golf facility. And for experience with your degree seek some management opportunies and you should still be able to get 4-5 hours in per day if you don't have a family and are as committed as you need to be. Good Luck! -

Thanks for the post. I think i do this at times as far as shifting the hips. -
besides getting to par 5 in 2 is a down hill lie when you have to flop over a a sand trap and a fast green or green sloping away from you.

Post-mortem: 130 to 88 in 6 months... what worked, what did not.
rsamsing replied to johnclayton1982's topic in Golf Talk
Thanks for the post. My new irons actually helped me but my old ones were 20 year old knock offs. I think i need to look at getting a different driver though. It's a dunlop if that gives you any idea. YES Dunlop. I just got down from 115 to high 90s. My next goal is a 95 consistently, but my blow up holes kill me. I played a tougher course yesterday. I was 6 over through 6 holes which is great for met, then posted a triple bogey and 2 double bogeys to end up at a 52 for the front. I got it together and shot a 45 on the back. thm is was playing with out a driver or 3 wood. I tee up with a 4 iron which gives me about 210 yards on average as opposed to going 240 into the water. I'm tall so my swing arc lets me hit decently long without trying to kill it so a lot of par 4s i can still get on in two if i'm from 190 and in. I definately agree with what you said regarding being 200 plus out and I used to pull out the three wood and completely screw up my shot. I know aim to get a decent line from about 100-130 yards out and take a wedge in. I play with a friend who can hit his 3 wood off the fairway 260 on average but he shoots in the 70s regularly. I also can't wait to be able to hit a fairway wood 200 plus consistently. I think some lessons would work to ingrain the proper grip, swing path etc. and i'll definately check out some of those videos. -
taylormade burner irons...colour

TaylorMade Burner 2.0 Irons RRP: $467.98 Our Price:$389.99 This is what they show on their site. For the setup up it says 4-9APS but they only show a 3-PW in the picture. My biggest problem is that if i bout mine for 699, then how are they selling for 389 and their SRP should be 699. If golfsmith can't price this cheaper then i'm sure almost nobody else can. That's the old "If it sounds too good to be true.......". -

If they are the real deal they are great clubs. The black gets a bit duller looking after some use. I've heard some people complain about this, but the could turn purple and i wouldn't mind with the way they hit. -
Honestly, I was going to go for the g15s but i hit about 10 different irons where the sets cost anywhere from 299 to i think 999 for the k15s hybrid and it's what worked best for me. I don't think i got to hit the superlaunch, but it's all about what works for you. I actually got the clubs off the rack because i was hitting them dead straight on the simulator, but a proper fitting never hurt anyone. I also agree with you that 600 for a set is steep but i wanted to get a set that i can play for the next several years and it's the set that i hit the best. This is my second set i've purchased since i started playing. My first set was 200 and they were knock off king cobras.

That is actually my biggest problem. I get out on the course and a lot of times and can't help but think my head position, spine angle and all kinds of other things i shouldn't be thinking about. I'm really trying to establish a consistent preshot routine and then just think about tempo like you said.

How do you get better if you don't consciously think about it on the range. I think about it on my practice swings and then just don't think about anything on my actual swing besids striking the ball. Just my opinion, but i definately agree with you about not consciously thinking about any swing mechanics when you're playing.
