Not usually. Most of the woods I have are more or less solid colors on top, with the graphics and logos on bottom. Don't want something to catch your eye at address.

I'm looking forward to playing Osprey. I've mostly been playing Delray Beach GC this year, but I've made it out to a few others.

Would've loved to see him burn a fastball in there, but still super cool. ...and that's coming from a Braves fan!

Rory is very lucky. Woz still looked great after three hours of pounding it. Her fitness level won that match -- just plain old outlasted Svet.

It looks an awful lot like another strong SEC season. LSU looked great against Oregon. Alabama is going to be tough this year in all phases, and there are some surprises in store for us somewhere in the South Carolina/Florida camps I'd reckon. Auburn is a mere shadow of last year without Newton and Fairley. Georgia looked worse than they should be, and I think we're all in a wait and see on Ole Miss, Tennessee and Arkansas. Looking forward to seeing Oklahoma play. Wouldn't that be a kick to see a Big XII team go big after their conference got kicked around this offseason? Texas needs a QB to compete seriously. Nebraska might surprise a few folks, as might Missouri. I see little to get excited about in the ACC, Big East or BigTen (12) this year. Yes, Ohio State beat Akron, but I'm not sure they can recover to be contenders. Iowa keeps getting close, but they can't seem to keep the talent pipeline full. Wisconsin looks pretty good, I think. Need to watch more tape. PAC 12 looks to be all Ducks. Even in their loss to a very good LSU, they appear strong. USC was unimpressive against Minnesota. Not much else out there at the moment. Boise might be the team out west to make noise aside from the PAC, but they should have beaten UGA a little more handily, I think.

What cool social/custom rules have you played under?
ettsn replied to Lofty Lefty's topic in Rules of Golf
We do also play a "max putts" rule whenever the greens have been freshly aerated. Typically you only count a max of three then. I really like the idea of buying a length of string for charity and using that to inch putts closer. Cool idea! -

Thinking of Changing My Golf Ball
ettsn replied to Teamanglerx's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I think you'll like the NXT models. I prefer the NXT Tour version myself. While you're checking out new balls, give a sleeve of Srixon Q-stars a try. I just picked some up, so haven't used them enough for a complete evaluation, but early reports are they are very good. Good enough, in fact, that I think they might have displaced the NXT Tour as my preferred ball of choice. -
Sand and some water Creep into my mind pre-swing Focus, make the shot!

Pulled into the woods Then up and down for a save This game drives me nuts!

As an avid Falcons fan, I know this script all too well. I would bet that Vick's Superman impression will curtail soon and he will revert to half-assing it, since this contract means he doesn't have to prove himself. He will be a decent QB this season, but I would be highly surprised if he put stats in the top ten this year. I would expect an even worse performance next year. I suppose one bright spot in this deal is that he now has the cash to repay many of his creditors (as managed by the court appointed debt manager) including the Falcons, which may well result in the Falcons getting a cap credit as recovery to the unearned signing bonus dollars. Knowing the NFL, they'll probably figure out a way to keep the Falcons from gaining any value back from this whole debacle.

Anyone play with just every other club?
ettsn replied to wormkiller's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
When I go to the range, I work up the irons either odd or even (for example, I start on either my 64 or 60 wedge and work up using every other club odd/even until I get to the woods). That way, in two sessions I've spent a fair number of balls on each iron. I usually hit ten balls each and then finish up the bucket on one wood, then I go putt until I'm either out of energy or daylight. I haven't done this on course yet, but there are a few executives nearby, and I've been considering picking up a Sunday bag for exactly that. I really like Tin Man's ideas above! -
Last (Golf) Thing You Bought?
ettsn replied to JYB's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Last trip, I picked up only a few items: a Titleist visor, a new towel and a used R7 425 Quad to complete another set to load to out of town friends. -

In my company league, we play 9 holes on Thursdays right after work. Because no one gets an opportunity to properly warm up, everyone is entitled to two tee shots on the first hole, of which you can play either. You also get one mulligan over the whole nine (choose wisely!) and max score for any hole is double par (snowman on a par 4, for example). This keeps pace up and makes it less stressful since most of us literally drive from the office and are teeing up inside of about ten minutes total. Of course we have a few guys that are single digit hc that choose to play by the full regulations, which we all highly respect. Our league is not competitive, just a chance for a bunch of us to get out and blow off some steam with work buddies once a week. The course also takes good care of us, giving us a good rate on the rounds plus has free appetizers (usually wings, tacos or meatballs) waiting in the 19th for us. I suppose none of that is really all that unusual, but it does make for a nice afternoon! :) -
No, that is not normal. Sounds like the shaft may be de-plying or perhaps you are hearing epoxy breaking at the shaft/head joint.
-
While those might be old enough that the grooves are not CC, it shouldn't matter for you. A high school player is by definition an amateur, and therefore the new groove regulations don't apply until you'll most certainly be out of high school (2024). There is a chance your local scholastic sports organization has implemented the new groove rule, but I would highly doubt it. Clone clubs, provided they are materially similar to known legal clubs (meaning not some crazy unusual design), should be fine, but you can ask your coach to be sure.

Can someone help my find my type of ball?
ettsn replied to CodyM's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I'm gonna disagree a little. While it is mostly the golfer, if a ball stops two feet from the pin versus hitting in the same spot and rolling off the back of the green, that could easily be two strokes on one hole. Finding a stroke here or there with the help of a better ball adds up. -
Adams makes nice stuff. Does he have a demo set you can take out to the range and try out?

I'm Northern Irish, so I'm a big fan of Rory, GMac and Clarke. My girlfriend is South African, so I like watching Els, Player, Retief, Charl, Oostie and Trevor too. On the home front, I'm currently digging on Fowler. Dude has style, knocks amazing shots with a cool nonchalance and just seems to be enjoying life out there. I have always liked watching Freddy Couples. Sweetest swing since Hogan IMO.

5 & 6 Iron have no distance??
ettsn replied to carpediem4300's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Are you taking a divot? What does it look like? Does it begin before or after where the ball was sitting? Where do you align the ball in your stance? Does it shift by club? -
Decent advice, except your comment on shaft stiffness. I'd bet the farm his swing is better suited for a Regular flex, versus a stiff. Waaay too many people buy a shaft too stiff for their swing, and their distance (and accuracy to a lesser extent) suffers. The best thing for him to do is to get on a simulator and see what his swing speed and launch angle actually are. Even if he's going to buy something off the used rack, it's a worthwhile exercise to understand what he *should* be playing.
