  1. This looks like a really interesting practice aid... I'm definitely going to have to look at one of these closer
  2. These are my favorite balls to play. My swing speed is a little lower down in the mid to high 80's on average and while I wouldn't say they are the longest balls I've played, they definitely made up for it in feel around the greens and when putting if you want that soft feel... I was previously playing the Bridgestone E6 and they were longer but I had problems with them sticking to the greens I was playing and bouncing or rolling off . Those same shots would be on the green with the chrome's. I'm definitely not anywhere close to a good player but even I was able to notice a significant difference in my game on approach shots and putting with them
  3. And as a follow up I can't wait to get to the range tomorrow night and hit this thing again and just swing my clubs in general. As much as this game makes me crazy, nothing feels better than flushing it with any club
  4. The Amp Cell was what I went in expecting to buy. It came in a very close second for sure. I fell in love with and bought the amp cells as my irons towards the end of last year after expecting to spend a ton more on the Pings or the new Mizuno's but I hit them way better than anything else. The other driver I really liked was the G25 but I couldn't justify the extra money especially when I was hitting the R1 better
  5. Thanks Hammer! I feel like a total tool but I'm psyched about this one. Spam, I don't plan on touching the settings as we definitely spent time tweaking things on the launch monitor till I was consistently (or at least as much as possible ) hitting the same looking shot distance and shape wise. I actually ended up lowering my loft to 9.5 from my usual 10.5 closed the face and set it up with more of a draw bias weighting wise and I was consistent 255-270 with a draw or a baby fade if I really came over the top. I just can't wait to hit it more and get more and more comfortable with the looks and feel as I'm coming from one of the square headed nike drivers from a couple of years ago.
  6. I went into goldsmith today thinking I was going to buy the cobra amp cell driver and walked out with a black R1. I saw they had it on super sale along with the cobra and a couple of calloway's. I got lucky and they actually had most of them in lefty and luckily the only R1 happened to be my much preferred black one. After hitting them all and narrowing it down to the cobra and the R1 we got to tweaking both and after that it was no contest. The R1 was way more consistent and longer for me once the adjustments got dialed in. I never expected to like it as I never hit their clubs well but the R1 just felt like it was made for me! Looking forward to spending more time hitting it and really learning what it can do
  7. I just bought the factory black one today and love the look of the combined glossy and matte finish... If I was doing only one though I'd stick with the matte sandblasted look
  8. Interesting... I bought a couple dozen balls at costco this weekend and the one's by me in NY were called Hex Control. They're a 3pc non-urethane ball. For $30/2 dozen I figured why not especially since I'm playing 3 water laden courses down in Ocean City, MD this weekend and I expect to lose a bunch due to my mental block with water. If I had more time I would have bought the TP3's from TGW or the Hex Chrome Xouts which were $20/dozen also on TGW. I love the TP3's though and was very disappointed when they stopped making them. The 2 for $50 deals they were running on them last season made it the best value for a urethane 3 piece ball I've seen not online.
  9. I was looking at the Hex Pro also just not sure if I can get to Costco anytime soon. I have a golf trip down to Ocean City Maryland next Thursday so I need to pick up some balls this weekend for that trip. I noticed Golfsmith was running a sale on the HX Bite balls with 2 dozen for $30. Anyone have any experience with them? I noticed they're also a 3piece ball.
  10. I used to game the Chrome which I loved but couldn't justify the cost with how many I was losing so I switched to the Taylormade TP3 which is now discontinued. I was just looking and saw Callaway now has Hex Hot and Hex Hot Pro which are a bit cheaper than the Chrome but still 3 piece balls. I know the hots are not a urethane cover but is that a big difference? Other than that how different would they play?
  11. I appreciate all the input on this thread. I decided to pass on the Mizuno's for now and instead keep working on my swing. I talked about it with the pro I'm working with and he suggested I wait keep developing a more repeatable swing and then get fit for a set either at the end of this season or beginning of next. The pull is definitely a development of fixing what was a slice. When I come through to quickly I yank it. When I'm on time it's a nice high draw.
  12. I actually just had a driver lesson last weekend because I really just can't hit it. The first thing the pro said to me was your driver is way too long. I questioned him on it because I'm 6'3 and said to me every off the shelf driver is at least an inch too long for most players and in some closer to 2-3". He had me choking down and the difference was dramatic. I went from missing the sweet spot to hitting it dead on 90% of the time. I definitely need to get it cut down
  13. I play the Nike sumo2 set from a few years ago which are 5-7 hybrid 8-Sw irons. Personally although I hit the hybrids ok I actually prefer a more normal iron set and are looking to replace them. I even will borrow one of my other lefty friends 6 or 7 iron in some situations just to avoid hitting the hybrids from certain lies. It's not that they're bad though.
  14. I've been playing the TP3 balls since last season but I know they've taken them out of the line and have a bunch of new options. Which ball in their line is the closest to a direct replacement. Before the TP3 I was playing hex chrome's and e6. I loved the chromes but I hate the price... The TP3 played the closest feel wise to me at a significantly lower cost. Are there other options I should look at in the $20-25/dozen price point?
  15. I appreciate the input. I definitely love the feel of the newer Mizuno GI/SGI irons... I've hit both the JPX800 and 825 and they felt great I just wish I had the coin to drop on them right now. My biggest concern is if it makes more sense to spend a bit more and maybe get something like a burner 2.0 cleveland CG14/16 which can be found at around the $300/350 range right now. I know there's a ton of new tech going on but since I'm still playing at such a high score and working on swing flaws how much of a difference would that really make for me?
  16. I'm at the point in my game going into this season where I'm starting to consistently shoot in the 100-105 range, hopefully breaking into the 90's and beyond this season. I'm currently playing with a hybrid iron set from Nike (Sumo2) which are obviously very forgiving but as I've been playing more and more I like less and less the fact that they're hybrids from 5-7. They also have some ridiculous level of off-set which was great when my common miss was a slice but now my biggest miss is a hook. In any case I've been looking at picking up a set of more traditional GI/SGI irons for this season and I have a line on a set of MX-19's for under $150. I know these clubs are a few years old at this point but I'm curious what people's thoughts are on how they compare to some of the newer irons out there. I'm also looking at R7's but I believe they're the draw profile that I'm not that interested in, Nike SQ Machspeed's and Cleveland CG7's. Obviously the Nike's are the newest of that bunch but I'm less concerned with how new they are more about how they'll perform for someone at my skill level. Any feedback/input would be greatly appreciated.
  17. After the initial getting comfortable phase of learning the new clubs I can say they were a huge improvement over the set wedges I was playing previously. I am far from an expert player but I could definitely feel the difference and the spin was significantly better with these. I'm still terrible out of the sand but that's more about my swing then the wedge. For the price you can find these for now I would not hesitate to pick them up if you haven't already. I got mine from Rockbottomgolf.com and they seem to have the best prices on them anywhere I've seen. I got a 52,56 and 60 for $99 at the time.
  18. So I'm in the market for a new cart bag and I've been looking at the Sun Mountain C130 and the KG3. Outside of the weight I can't tell if there's too much difference. Anyone have experience with either and care to share their opinions? Also how do the olio bags stack up? I use Ogio for my snowboard bags and they look nice in the store but don't know anyone who has one...
  19. I had the same problem with the e6 so my coach suggested I try the Callaway Hex Chrome or Penta TP3. I'm currently playing the Penta's because of the deals going on lately but I actually like the Hex Chrome better on both distance and sitting down on the green off an approach shot. I didn't really like the Q-Stars myself I felt like they played the same around the greens as the e6.
  20. I just went through this same situation myself went with a used set of Nike Sumo2 Hybrid Irons I picked up off ebay that came with a bag, putter, driver etc. All in I paid about $300. That said, in retrospect I would just buy the Adams Tight Lies or Tight Lies Plus full set because I've since had the opportunity to hit them as one of my friends has them and they're solid clubs and I actually like them better than the clubs I ended up with. I'd say if you can find a good deal the Tight Lies set go for it. You'll probably end up replacing the driver and the putter relatively quickly but for at least your first season you should be good to go.
  21. I haven't been back playing all that long but I notice the same trends in my game as well. I'll play a bunch of rounds in a row with consistently improving results and then all of a sudden it will disappear for a while. I just keep playing through it and working on my fundamentals knowing that if I keep playing eventually I'll get it back.
  22. I take weekly full-swing lessons at Golftec to work on those mechanics and I play at least once a week and hit the range or my net at least once a week as well. When I first picked this game back up I would consistently 3 or 4 putt everything and I realized it's because I spend all of my practice time working on the other parts of my game and nothing on my putting. Now I make sure I spend at least 30 minutes 4-5 times a week putting. Most of that time is spent in my basement hitting into one of the 29.99 auto return putting greens you can buy at Dicks, GG or Golfsmith. While it might not simulate reading a break or anything like that it allows me to work on developing a consistent stroke and practice distance control so when I do get out there I'm not guessing as much as I used to be. When I get the opportunity I hit up the local putting green and practice reading the breaks from both uphill and downhill putts. I've tried a couple of different putting techniques over the last couple of months but finally settled on the claw style like Mickelson uses because for me I find that it removes the wrists and allows me to get a consistent even stroke. Figure out what is the most effective for you and then just practice away at it until it becomes second nature. There's no magic to it, like anything else in life you have to put the work in to get better.
  23. I think I just need to play more executive style courses with mostly Par 3's and work on that part of my game more. It's just mind blowing how a shot can be so totally different even on how you miss just because you're standing in a tee box versus hitting from the fairway or the rough. Like almost everything else in this game I'm sure it's mostly a mental roadblock more than a physical one, sort of like how if there's water on a hole some how some way I find a way to dunk my ball into it.
  24. I have the VR wedges with the V-Rev grooves and I also just recently got them. So far i'm pretty happy with them, good spin, I like the weight of the head and pretty easy to hit from most of the lies I've used them in thus far. I can't directly compare them to the CG-16's though as I haven't hit them on course only in the bay.
  25. For some reason I have consistently had issues playing par 3's as well as I can play 4's and 5's. I seem to have some sort of a mental block when the ball is tee'd up and I'm hitting an iron on a shot that I would normally put either on the green or just off into the rough. Sometimes I just duff it, sometimes I'm short (which I can deal with) but most recently I've been getting a severe hook to the right (I'm a lefty) that forces me to make a real tough second shot to get onto the green. I probably average a 5 on a par 3 right now and it's definitely effecting my overall scores. I'm the most frustrated because I've definitely developed a pretty consistent iron approach shot from the fairway or even the rough over the last month and a half or so but it just doesn't translate to the Par 3's. I've tried raising the tee and no tee at all and still can't seem to find something that works for me.
