Thinking about cutting my 3 wood to hybrid length ...
CPFitness replied to inthehole's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
There is some truth to this. if you don't play a lot of golf, your results are going to suck even if you have the perfectly fitted clubs. but there has been a TON of misinformation spread in this thread. What a lot of people don't realize is that the driver is the lightest clubhead while the wedge is the heaviest. At one point early in this thread, the op mentioned that the 3 wood had more mass than a 5 or 7 wood which is why he was theorizing cutting down the 3 wood would work. in reality the 3 wood is lighter than a 5 or 7 wood. when you cutdown a club so dramatically there will be issues with feel as it relates to your other clubs. I recently put a 15* hybrid back into my bag. I play a 13* 3 wood that I can hit 260-275 off the tee but i was looking for something closer to 4 wood distance. The Alpha rf gx3 15* hybrid is perfect. it gives me a solid 230-245 off the tee with damn good accuracy because the club is so short its easier to control and to hit off the sweet spot. I would look to a low lofted hybrid before I would cut a 3 wood 3 inches short of standard. if you do want to cut a 3 wood that short, you should go with a much heavier shaft to maintain proper feel. A steel shafted super short 3 wood could work. Many people play "Thriver" which is a high lofted driver head shafted at 3 wood length. you could do something similar with your 3 wood. -

1500 miles over 20 days. saddle time was 8-13 hours most days. we did a lot more night riding than planned! lol at one point we had a 7 day stretch where we went 92, 94, 97, 25, 100, 100, 92. pretty crazy in hindsight! I'm also on strava as username cpfitness and I had my garmin with me on the tour so you can see all the stats. it was back in late april through the first 2.5 weeks of may

I see your in Waynesboro! Go hit the Blue Ridge Parkway. Some of the hardest work you'll ever do but some great rewards! I just rode through there 6 weeks ago on my way out to joplin, mo from NYC

Dont expect miracles. Keep in mind there are plenty of fatbodies on the pga tour who are probably weak as shit in the gym but who have a pretty good swing. yes, fitness can help your golf game, but it's not the end all be all either. Also, after doing tons of workign out, it's easy to tend to want to overswing and then you end up hitting the ball all over the course and deeper into the woods!

one legged squats with perfect form are very difficult with just your body weight. don't sweat using added weight, the strength you build comes largely from engaging more muslce fibers because you have to stay balanced. Without seeing your technique on your regular squats it's hard to say. I'd love to see your technique with a body weight squat with hands raised over head like they do on the TPI show. thats a great basic test to see where you are coming from

He didn't say anything about consulting a trainer. which he should have. His advice of using those machines is just as apt to cause him injury down the road, as doing squats and deadlifts with poor form is. Now i agree with you, yes he really should be working with someone to insure the form is correct. I'm a trainer so I'm biased but I'm amazed at how many people hire someone for everything in life (taxes, cleaning lady, contractor) but when it comes to their body, they don't see the value in it?? mind boggling to me. A healthy, functioning body is what enables everyone to go out and earn their living surely there is a value in keeping it that way!

bullcrap, all leg press and leg extensions are gonna do is teach him how NOT to use his core muscles. you don't swing a golf club with your back pressed against a pad so you should exercise with your back against a pad.

There is a great book called Weight training for womens golf by Kai Fusser who was Annika's personal trainer. He's clearly trying to niche market it towards women but in my opinon (and I'm a personal trainer myself) I think it's a great book for women AND MEN. It's built mainly around the premise that women tend to have stronger legs as compared to their upper body while men have strong upper bodies as compared to their legs. It provides solid routines that are easy to understand and integrate and dont take a long time to knock out in the gym. Everyone is also talking a lot about raw strength and flexibilty but along with flexibility, balance is a necessary requirement and this book addresses that. IT is periodized training as well so it takes you from the off season with basic getting the body back into working out mode into a strength building phase, then into a power building phase and finally into a maintenance phase. really good book, I got it from amazon and read it on my kindle app so I have the routines at my finger tips when I'm in the gym. Reason why I bring this all up is that for WOMEN during the strength phase he advocates HEAVY lifts with 3 sets going 8 reps, 5 reps, 6 reps. As a trainer, women are always afraid of lifiting heavy for fear that they will get bulky when the reality is that they don't have the testosterone production to get big massive muscles. As men we do have that ability however powerlifting with low reps doesn't build muscle size, it builds max strength. It's when men lift in between shooting for 10-12 reps that the body responds by growing the size of the muscles which could then throw things out of wack. At any rate, don't take my word for it, get the book. it's very inexpensive in the kindle format, I think I paid 9 bucks.

Just watched my first crit live last week, the Harlem skyscraper classic. It was NASCAR on bikes, just a .75mile lap around Marcus Garvey park in Harlem. The pro race was 60laos (50 miles) they averaged 33mph on dead flat ground. Race was over in an hour and a half!

grooves? we don't need no stinkin grooves. keep the ball in the fwy and grooves are irrelevant! -
Good stuff, I find most cyclists do have a prefferred element but often times MTB'ers like the raw speed of the road and road cyclists like the down and dirty MTB action. For me, I would probably prefer MTB but since I live in NYC road cycling is really the only option. bought a bike 2 years ago after blowing out my ACL and not having insurance to get it repaired. I'm in the fitness biz and I have a client that has done Leadville, the ULTRAMARATHON which is absolutely crazy. As for group rides, I don't really love them either but this particular one is essentially a race so it's all action and pretty experienced riders so relatively safe though some crashes do occur.

IF you train properly, your legs will get stronger and not bigger.

Avid cyclist here. Just got back a month ago from a NYC to Joplin, Mo loaded tour to raise money for charity. You can see where I went at www.cycleforjoplin.com and www.facebook.com/cycleforjoplin I wore loudmouth golf shorts for virtually the entire trip! They caught wind of what I was doing and they actually sent out a couple more pairs to me. Really great guys! This was a 20 day tour to raise money to build storm shelters and to commemorate the 1 year anniversary of the Tornado This was my first loaded tour, normally I'm riding my road bike. I don't race but I have a few friends who do and I do some aggressive training rides with them. Average pace is usually around 23mph with 50-100 riders so definately benefitting from the draft.

your buddies don't know shit, almost every athlete would benefit from powerlifting. Only thing I would say for a golfer is don't go overboard on the bench press and definately add in plenty of back work to keep things balanced up there but the squats and deadlifts along with improved flexibility will have you booming it. If nothing else, you will be able to swing easier with more control and hit it as far as you do now. That is my main goal with my golf specific strength training. I already have a 118mph swing speed, I don't need more, I just need to get it there with less effort so that I strike it cleaner and improve dispersion.

everyone talking about your backswing being to upright is so full of crap. Watch any episode of the haney project and look at what hank is trying to do; most amatuers come way inside and than cast it right over the top and it's slice city. HAnk always has them try to exaggerate LOOPING IT THE OTHER WAY which is what your swing is doing. I agree, it is one of the uglier looking swings I"ve seen but so is Jim Furyk's you probblyhve less work to do than you think.

CPFitness replied to ryohazuki222's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
You bring up a very good point here. Everyone keeps talking about "inch over std" when come on, we all know the only standard in golf is that there are no standards!!! manufacturers aren't just jacking up lofts, they are often adding length to clubs too. in my opinion the length of the club doesn't matter all that much, i'm more interested in the lie angle. If you lengthen or shorten any given club you simply adjust your setup position, however if you don't have the lie angle adjusted appropriately, then there are issues. I broke one of my wedges a co uple of weeks ago and hve been gaming my GF's wedge in it's place until I get around to fixing mine. it's 2.5 inches shorter than my wedge but I have no problems with it. -

What did you end up going with? I didn't see anyone mention this but another option for your FW woods is to play the Alpha but don't tip it and see how it plays. if it launches just right, great. IF it launches too high, just tip it to the proper spec.
