  1. I have an old video instruction on this very subject. Those that brush the turf at impact tend to be good with woods and fairway shots, but have lots of trouble in rough and have a very high ball flight. Those that take divots may have some trouble on tight lies but do pretty well in rough and have penetrating ball flight. To learn how to make a divot after impact, practice exaggerating at impact. Here is what may be happening: if your brushing the turf at impact, it means your hands and the club face are parallel at impact or club face is in front of your hands at impact - hitting up on the ball. Low handicappers and pro's have their hands ahead of the club face at impact. How to exaggerate impact: Take your 8 iron, place ball in the middle of your stance and take your back swing. In slow motion, on your downswing, PULL the butt end of the club toward the ball, on plain, so your hands pass the ball. Have the club face contact the ball when your hands are practically by your left thigh (right handers). Do this exercise several times, then hit a few balls. Let the club do the work, the only action on the downswing should be pulling the butt end of the shaft toward the ball. What is happening: The club face angle of descent is stepper so now the club face will most likely bottom out in-front of the ball because your hands are now in-front of the club face, consequently the club face bottoms out where your hands are. Hope this helps. The video is from the PGA Tour Partners Club Game Improvement Series.
  2. I had a ball marker made with my initials M@, but I lost it. So if anyone finds a silver ball marker with those initials please mail it back to me.
  3. the Golf show was lots of fun. Tons of stuff to do, tons of info, and tried almost every club offered at the Try and Buy area. I ended up buying the Clickgear for $170 and the Cleavland RST-DSG wedges 56 and 60. Won several free rounds of golf, and had a ball with the High Def Golf Simulator. Wish I had that in my garage. The only negative thing was the kiosk where you get your free round of golf for going to the show. It was a touch-screen kiosk and many did not understand how to use it so there was a huge crowd waiting for a long time. It basically wanted a survey and your info like name, address, and email, where you heard the Golf Show from, do you listen to this radio station, want info from this vendor or that. Bah, I want my free round of golf NOW! I use to work with electronics like kiosk so I knew what it wanted and how to fly through all the questions, took me 30 sec. to get my free round while most took 3 to 5 minutes. Was funny. The elderly couple took notes and started a trend. Hehe. I'm sure the people collecting the info won't like it. Cleaning the database won't be fun. But this was the BEST golf show I've been to since taking up this sport, so if you haven't gone and thinking about, tomorrow is the last day and they will have last day sales as always.
  4. I've come to that conclusion as well. I met one of the instructors at the golf show here in Seattle. She didn't seem to pay much attention to me, probably because I caught her at her lunch hour - she was eating a sandwich when I was talking. I asked her qualifications and basically she graduated at a golf collage where she spent 3 days to be certified as an instructor. That was all I needed to here. I did meet the assistant pro at Chambers Bay and he was far more qualified and seemed very intent on my objective towards on-course instruction. I'll be spending my money there.
  5. The 3rd year playing golf, got in the bunker and took me 4 strokes to get out. Tossed the wedge and broke in half. Left it in the trash can.
  6. Here is something. Chambers Bay: 9 hole instruction with the PGA pro instructor for $175. Plus, they have shot clinics every Friday for $20. If I need more work it's just $80/hr.
  7. Shot 82 @ The Home Course. It's was cold, windy, and pouring rain. Did a lot of scrambling for par. Putting was doing better. Only 3 putted once. FIR 50%, GIR 39%, putts 32, Up/down 45%.
  8. I my instructor looked like that, I'd have stayed on for more than 3 years.
  9. For the first 3 years of my golf history I hired an instructor and it costed my around $1200 a year, which was cheap. I don't have a home course and not many have instructors on their courses. But your idea might give me something to research on, Washington National, Chambers Bay, and Newcastle have instruction, just not sure the cost. Of course, practicing at Chambers Bay might be worth it if it's included or at a discount. You can practice there all day for $21.
  10. I have the privilege to take a golf instruction course. The problem is I've always wanted to take those 3-day on course instructions where the instructor watches you play a few holes and then instruct based on what he thinks I could use the most improvement. http://www.portludlowresort.com/golf/instruction.php My budget only includes instruction that I can drive to so out-of-state is out-of-the-question. We recently got GolfTec in Seattle and I'm intrigued but not sold on it. http://www.golftec.com/ What's your thoughts on this? Would GolfTec benefit me more or the on-course instruction?
  11. Well it cost 10 bucks but there is a 2 dollar off coupon at the website www.seattlegolfshow.com . Also parking will probably cost 10 bucks as well. Last year was the lamest showing they had and I think they don't want something like that again. This year looks really good. Again, they have the try and buy area. Your son can hit balls all day with every club if he wants to. There's several contests to try, I'm sure they'll have the hole-in-one contest on the field along with Birdie Ball hitting area. I have those and they are fun. Check out anything new and buy new, demoed, and used gear. Have 10 minute personal instruction, my favorite, get ideas for trips, tons of stuff. Two hour drive is worth it, imo. If you want to save a few bucks bring your own lunch, the vendors are ok, hot dogs and pop for 7 bucks, might be more for events, but the area restaurants are good but not really cheap - captive audience and all.
  12. When I went back home, Big Island, Hawaii, my sister wanted to go golfing with me. She just took up golf and never played 18 holes because by the 9th hole she was to tired to play from swinging so many times. I gave her an easy tip, "Play Your Weakness, and play the club your most comfortable with." She sliced everything, so I had her aim to the left side of her target. She made 10 FIR's and par'd 1 hole. She scored 99 for the first time and played 18 holes for the first time. Here is something you might want to think about to break 100: instead of trying to par the hole, try setting your sights for bogey or dbl bogey. You have 2, 3, or 4 shots to get on the green and two putt. Even if you 3 putt it isn't bad, just try not to do it more than 9 times. If you bogey every hole you'll probably shoot 90, which gives you 9 dbl bogeys to still break 100.
  13. I'm there on Saturday. Friday I want to go golfing. hehe Besides, I don't want to go home during rush hour. I've been going for some time now, the Seattle and Portland shows. This one is suppose to be the biggest yet. It looks like it from the Exhibitor list and for once we can try and buy - finally! I have my eye on two new wedges, Cleveland CG12 DSG 54 and 58 degree.
  14. Congrats! I only wish we had a golf team when I was in junior high. Small town bumpkin. Besides, growing up in Hawaii all we ever do is surf.
  15. I like them both. I get tips from lots of magazines and websites.
  16. Unfortunately, it's a common issue in leagues and tournaments. I commonly see mid to high handicappers hit very low, even questionable, scores. You just have to go with it, and it may be a legit score so good for them. I know in my tournament league I have to try for those KP's and Long Drives to break even and keep playing well for the point standings, because there is very little chance for me to win rounds against a mid or high handicapper. Our league posts all the scores on GHIN so there is no question there. Today I shot 82, net 70(12 handicap), came in 2nd. The winner shot 85(18 handicap) for net 67. I know this person does not post all his scores, what can you do... beat em on the next one.
  17. Shot 82, net 70, tournament at Gold Mountain, Cascade course, 5 over my goal. I'd have to say it's very difficult to be grouped with slow and angry players. Got caught up with it in the middle of the round but I concentrated on my game and did fine. I did 3 putt 4 holes so I'll need to work on that. I did tie for 2nd place and got long drive. Got back 4 bucks more than what I put in, enough for a beer.
  18. 73 @ Sumner Meadows from the blues. Couldn't pass up a $15 round. Gatta work on my putting. Missed 4 5 footers. sigh.
  19. When I went club shopping last year I tried every iron brand out there and it fell between Idea Pro's and Mizuno MP57. They both had what I was looking for: soft feel, forgiveness (not like game improvement clubs), and forged. I went back and forth for nearly a month, did some research, asked tons of questions and finally decided on the Idea Pro's. What did it for me: I have a fairly low-ball flight and the Black Gold shafts would assist in getting the ball up faster, also the hybrids where the main reason. I thought about my game and usually the 3I and 4I are either for teeing on short par 4's or reaching the green on some par 5's or recovering from a junk drive. I don't use em for much other than those so I don't need a club that can work the ball as much. I wanted a club that will hit straight and long. Idea Pro's do just that. They are worth the cost just for those 2 clubs, imo. The first day I used these clubs I shot a 76, and I attribute my 2007 Tournament League wins to these clubs. Ever since I've been breaking 80 more often than not. Of course, this is my view and experience. Try both out, don't rush it, you want to make the right decision and be happy about it. Also, which ever you chose get them fitted.
  20. Will you marry me? lol.
  21. 100 yards. I've worked on these distances since last September: 50 deg.: 3/4 swing = 100 yrds, 1/2 swing = 50 yrd with roll 56 deg.: 3/4 swing = 80 yrds, 1/2 swing = 40 yrd with roll 60 deg: 3/4 swing = 50 yrds no roll, 1/2 swing 20 yrd with little roll.
  22. Thanks for the tips. I figured the prices are kind of high for the type of courses they have - only 2, and not the best, but with our club they have some sort of discount. I'll be bringing my own clubs so don't have to rent. Renting clubs are pricey no matter where you are, imo. I was told that people in Mexico try to sell you everything they can. I can understand, I survived Morroco, Africa, so Mexico would be cake. lol.
  23. click [more] under the smilies and it will show the logos. just click them to add them to your sig, In Edit Signature tab of course.
  24. I've been on a lot of golf vacations and the best way is have the resort pay for it. I mean time-share presentations. Whistler for example: Fairmont Chateau Whistler $199 for 2 ppl, 2 night, 2 round of golf. All you need to do is spend 90-minutes with em, say no thanks but thanks for the stay and be on your way. Tip: do the 90-minute presentation on the last day of your stay. That way you don't feel pressured. We do it all the time. My favorite was a few years back, 2 night stay at Running Y in Oregon. Got 2 nights, 2 rounds, and a 975J driver out the the deal. When we vacation in Hawaii we look for time-share presentation with golf as gifts. Save anywhere from $150 to $220 per round. We've done it at Sunriver, Oregon, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Orlando, Florida, Las Vegas, Nevada, and more. Not hard to find these guys because they're looking for you. This works Internationally as well. Of course, we've bought into 2 time-shares doing this and it has been paying off. Where heading to Zihuatanejo in May and I'm stoked. We're staying here for 18 days http://www.clubintrawestresorts.com/...nejo/index.asp and golf http://www.zihua.net/zihuatanejo/activities/golf.html I'll be drinking tequilla and smokin stoggies on the course and the beach. And we'll be looking for those time-share presentations for free golf or spa.
  25. Mine is reading greens. I just don't read the greens correctly, there are rounds where I do, but on those that looks like should break, don't and those that look straight, do. It's drives my nuts. lol
