Why you should ALWAYS get fitted by a professional
JeffJ replied to nykfan4life's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
All Academy is good for is golf balls and gloves. Larlev - Do you know a club fitter in Austin? I am looking for a REALLY good fitter. Someone who can measure me and make recs but that I can pay for the service and not feel like I need to order clubs through them. -
That what concerns me. If I get the AP2's and I have a bit of trouble hitting them I worry about a sense of frustration affecting my "come back". That could create bad swing habits. While the top line of the 1's is a little..very little bulkier the sole seemed to stay more in line with a players club. Jeez!
-
I looked and hit the I10's. To me they seemed to fall more inline with the AP1's. I really cant make up my mind between the AP1's and 2's. Do I buy a club I can get a little more forgiveness from while I get my groove back? OR buy the clubs I will need in a year and let my swing come to them? Does that even make sense?
-
Thanks for the input. Im overthinking this for sure but I am just curious. After coming back from a couple year lay off I am about an 18 handicap. Over the next year I should get it down to where I use to play at a 9-10. I dont know if I would be better off buying the AP2' right now and letting my swing and game come to them or buy say the AP1's that are inbetween game improvement and a players club, then update my clubs again i na year when everything gets rolling.
-
I am looking seriously at the AP2's as from hitting them and reading a bunch I feel they are as close to a straight player club that will still give some decent forgiveness. Would anyone who has hit them put the AP1 and G10 on the same level as far as workability and forgiveness. I felt as thought the AP1's were somewhere between the G10 and AP2. Thoughts??

Retired my 16 year old ping bag today.
JeffJ replied to JeffJ's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Yea I really like the fact that they are putting insulated pockets on them now. TTT for the morning crew. -
Well I blew out the last zipper today...luckily it was the big one so I have had storage when needed as they started to fail the last couple years. I stopped by Edwin Watts today to look at bags. I feel like I got 16 good years out of my Ping that I would be crazy not to buy another Ping. I narrowed it down to the Lattitude and Vantage. Assuming they are the same price basically($20 difference) which one would you choose? I do like the extra one or two dividers on the Lattitude and it looked like I could fit three bottled waters or gatorade in the insulated pockets. Any thoughts? Thanks.

That would be a "heck no"!

Whichever is next! I am seriously glued to the TV all four days of every major.

Considering her diamond earings she got in Novemeber(daughter born) cost more than my first car...wait...AND second car she should be happy. Not to mention I handed her $675 worth of Nordstroms gift cards on Friday...long story, but they didnt cost me a dime. I have managed to find my way into her good graces. In all honesty I have no business with a $300 putter but my parents said they want to get me something that means something and that I will have forever...seems to fit the bill just fine.

Do You Use a Practice Swing In Your Pre-Shot Routine?
JeffJ replied to nykfan4life's topic in Golf Talk
I will first address the ball and get an eye for the shot. From there I will take a practice swing at about 50% speed. If it is within 50 yards and not a full shot I will take a full speed swing to create the tempo I will need for the shot. I will then step about three yards behind the ball and pick my exact target, then I step up and align with the target. Grip it and shut my mind off from there and hit the shot. Sounds like it takes a long time but I tend to play a little quicker than average. -
Im in love with the AP2's. I have hit them twice and they fit the eye good and I feel confident with them in my hand. They are played by a pro I know and another buddy who is a 2 handicap. Also I figure it is a pretty good endorsement when the pro I take lessons from, who is repped by Cobra, told me to look at them over any club she knew of right now.

Grey Rock...formerly Circle C. I hit the AP2's again this morning at Golfsmith and they are just as smooth as I thought and felt yesterday. I hit the 1's just for the heck of it. They look and feel like a good comproise between a true player club and a super improvement club. For me I think I will quickly grow into the 2's.

She had the baby over at my parents house this morning while I was out messing around. They got to talking about my 30th birthday in July and my parents asked what I wanted. She told them, "he has been talking about this putter, but he said he would never buy one for himself...its called a Scott or something, or maybe it is made by a guy named Scott". They got to googling and found the Scotty Cameron website. My dad was sold when he saw they could get my name or initials stamped on it too. They told her to figure out which one I wanted and let them know. Its gotta be the Newport 2 from what I have been ableto put my hands on. I owe my wife! It should go real well with the new irons she wants to get me...I must be livin' right right now.

Well during my lesson last night i mentioned that I was looking at the new g10's. Pro said she didnt think I needed such an improvement club after watching me hit for a bit(first lesson). Coincidentally Cobra(who she is repped by) was having a members only demo day. She walked over and grabbed a few and brought them over for me to hit...they were the game improvement models and I didnt likethem at all. Purposely I hit it on the toe and got almost zero response from the club head. They just fetlt bad for me She kept handing me different models of improvement clubs and I couldnt believe how unresponsive they are for me. She then slid in a club, I was hitting these without looking at the brand or model, that lookede real goodat adress. A little smaller head at adress and a slimmer top line. PURE, felt great, like nothing I have ever hit in an iron. She made me hit a couple more before I looked at what it was...Freaking AP2. Another pro who is my height hits them and she wanted me to see what something more along the lines of a player club felt like. And the big draw/hook I sometimes went away when I was hitting them. She said it COULD have been from all the weight in the toe of my Ping's. They are getting the fitting cart next week so I can put everything on the board and monitor. I am going to hit them today at Golfsmith...it is off a mat at Golfsmith but better than nothing.

Whic of these four balls is the best bang for the buck?
JeffJ replied to JeffJ's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
This ball intrigues the crap out of me...and for $15 per dozen I am big time temped to try a couple dozen. -
In the world we live in typically competition creates lower prices. With companies like TM, Callaway, Bridgestone and Nike putting pressure on Titleist for top end balls, do you think we could see these high end balls dip into the $32-37 per dozen range? FYI, I am thinking of picking up a couple dozen 2007 Nike Platinums for $30.

...but here is what I am leaning towards. I love the pings but I am torn between straight G10's and a combination of I10 for 8-w and G10 for 4-7. Get a little more forgiveness on the G's and a little more workability from the I's. Or maybe I am just overthinking the WHOLE thing and need to just buy the G's, let my game improve to 10-14 then upgrade to the I's. Thoughts?

Before the lady I am working with now I worked with two different pro's. For one, he was probably the best ball striker I have ever seen. He actually played on a couple of what now are nike and nationwide type tours. He had a personal demon(booze) that made it impossible on him. The second I worked with was a great golfer. He would put ten straight balls inside 20 feet at 150 yards...if you whipped out a $50 bill and asked him to hit that green he wouldnt put it within twenty feet. When it meant something he couldnt execute. Most of the best of the best coaches were marginal players themselves...not all but most. I dont know what Leadbetter, Harmon, Pelz and the others make but I bet they make a TON of jack.

Game Improvement/Better Player Equipment
JeffJ replied to Doctorfro's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I am torn on the subject. Besides workability what is the downside to the improvement clubs? -
Ping i10 or G10 for a 18 handycapper?
JeffJ replied to Caddyshack's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
How ironic, I am in the same boat! I used to play a bunch but put the clubs up for about 6 years while I got my career on track. Now my career is bringing me back into golf(thank god) as I have a ton of HNW clients that like to play and some play well. Right now I am probably a 20-22, but with a little work with my new teaching pro and range time I should have that down to a 10-12 this year...which is where I used to play. I think that right now the G10's will be right for me and will help me getting my swing back. In a year or so I will switch to the I's and go from there. I am going to let me teaching pro advise me too and take her advice. I talked to my local ping guy and he said a bunch of people are buying G10 through about seven iron and then the I10's through the wedges...that was an interesting concept and a possibility. -
That is what I was thinking. I am pretty weird about things, I like everything in my bag to look and feel the same especially the grips. I actually have ping grips on my cobra speed and cleveland hybrids. Good news is a buddy just ordered almost the exact same measurements I neex in the same G10's...I will make a test run of his as soon as he gets them dirty.
-
Heck I cant hit a three wood to save my life. I hit the cleveland 2i hybrid and liked it. Couldnt find a 1i anywhere in town so I just ordered one. Nothing ventured, nothing gained right? Just a few bucks. If it gets me a little more confidence then it is worth it. If it adds one green or fairway every round or so that is gravy.

Hit them. Loved them. I have a question though. Because I hit a 16* and 20* hybrid I am not getting anything longer than a 5 iron. I am thinking about getting all the wedges that are available in the G10 as I need to replace my wedges anyways. Any reason NOT to get the G10 wedges? I swear I have a harder time making a decision on wedges than I do the entire set! Thanks for the help.
