Parents of Grade-Schoolers - Thoughts on Common Core
SCfanatic35 replied to Golfingdad's topic in The Grill Room
One of the big ideas behind the creation of CC is that students are hitting the workforce unprepared. So businesses had a say in these standards. They also looked at other countries that were successful with their educational systems and stole some of their ideas. -
Parents of Grade-Schoolers - Thoughts on Common Core
SCfanatic35 replied to Golfingdad's topic in The Grill Room
Yes, we started implementing the CCSS this year in grades K-9. Next year we will be adding 10th grade curriculum as well, the year after that the 11th grade. In California testing starts next year, but they are giving the test this year as a field test and to start norming the results for next year. The idea behind common core at least for us in high school is to teach more relevant topics and teach it in a way so that kids need to think and apply what they have learned. As opposed to the old way which was memorizing concepts and learning test taking strategies to get test scores up. One big issue we are facing is having no curriculum. Most textbook companies aren't going to put their effort into making a textbook until they can see what types of questions kids will be tested on. The good material won't be out until 2016 or later. I do like the idea behind common core because it forces kids to think, kind of like when we were in school. Kids who are caught in the middle right now are struggling as well as teachers who have been told how to teach for so long and now have to teach differently. It's hard to judge how good CC is right now. Probably be a change in about 10 years anyways, that's what goes on in education. They didn't even allow the last standards to go all the way through before getting rid of it. Totally rambling on now. -
The gorse was in full bloom when I was there. I got to admire it up close a few times, especially on day 1 when I couldn't hit a decent tee shot to save my life. Sucks being able to see your ball in it but can't get to it or don't even want to try and get it out of fear of pain.

They've gone the last 5 years in March so I would plan on the same for next year. Can't wait to go back and play them now that I have a better idea of what to do. Shot better every round, took a little while to get used to the style of play needed there. Shot 102,97,98,92. The round of 98 was at Bandon Trails and was our 2nd round of the day. Should have shot in the 80's but fatigue and powerful wind on the final 4 finishing holes made it hard. Next time I go I'm getting a caddie for every round. Something I'm not used to doing, worrying about wind when putting. I had downhill putts that got stopped by it. I had a few putts that had a good amount of break in them but the wind was blowing the opposite direction and canceled out the break. Not to mention all the times I putted from way off the green.

Just got back from my Bandon Dunes Golf Resort trip. I absolutely loved it, and can't wait to go back with the guys from my club. Played all 5 courses, Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes, Bandon Trails, Old McDonald, and the 13 hole Par 3 Preserve. Weather was absolutely perfect, the caddies in our group said that we were lucky to have such good conditions all 3 days we were there. The only day the weather got a little crazy was the first day on the back 9 of Bandon Dunes and the wind was blowing steady at 30 mph and gusting up to 40 maybe more. We also played the par 3 Preserve later in the afternoon in that wind. It was pretty funny watching all of the guys try and create a shot to get through the wind. One of the holes I aimed about 40 yards right and hit my 3hybrid to reach a 145 yard hole (my hybrid goes about 205). The 2nd day we played Pacific Dunes in the morning and then raced over on the shuttle to Bandon Trails to make our tee times. These were my 2 favorite courses at the resort. The final day, yesterday, we played Old McDonald in the morning and had just a little bit of wind, which made the course very tame. My PGA pro at my country club organized this trip. It cost me 1040 to play all 5 courses, 3 night stay, 2 dinners, and 3 breakfasts at the resort. Next time I go I'm taking Golfingdad and even of you crazy guys with me because we are allowed to bring guests as well. Having trouble uploading my photos. On a side note all of the guys who have made the trip to Pebble Beach resort said overall this trip was much better. They all agreed that Pebble itself is better than these courses, but the total package of courses, shuttles, food, staff, etc...Bandon beat Pebble.

I holed out a 75 yard SW for birdie today. 352 yard Par 4, My tee shot went left behind a tree, my only shot was to punch it out back to the fairway, SW one hopped in to the cup. I have chipped in before but never holed out from the fairway using a full swing. Almost hit a hole-in-one today too.

I'm in the Fresno area, so I am pretty much dead middle of SoCal and NorCal. Probably join you guys at some of your NorCal events if it's not too far from the Elk Grove area, can stay with a family member who lives there. My brother Golfingdad always talks about his SoCal outings so maybe it's about time I got in to the NorCal side and when we play this California Ryder Cup thing I can get in his head and we can dominate him and his SoCal buddies, LOL.

http://www.collegefootballpoll.com/bcs_explained.html Here is a good site to look at to explain how the BCS works.
-
The computer portion of the BCS doesn't take into account margin of victory anymore. A 1 point win is just as good as a 70 point win. The human poll component obviously can take that into consideration. The computer portion of the BCS goes as follows. Each team is rated by the 6 different computers. The highest and lowest rankings are then dropped and the teams score is divided by 100. A first place ranking gets you 25 points, 2nd place = 24 points, 3rd place = 23 points, etc... So Alabama gets ranked with 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 2. If you drop the 1 and 2, they are left with 1, 2, 2, 2. 25, 24, 24, 24 points respectively. 97/100 = .970. Take the Harris Poll % add it to the USA Today poll % add it to the computer % and divide it by 3, voila that is your BCS ranking.

Well I guess DeAnthony Thomas is going to get his wish. The Rose Bowl was no big deal, now he can experience the Alamo, Holiday or Sun Bowl. He hasn't done that yet.

Switching from Mizuno to Taylormade?
SCfanatic35 replied to Klarkus's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I just bought the JPX-825's and so far they have been great for me. 2 years ago when my handicap was 24, I would have hated these clubs. I used Callaway Diablo Edge's for 3 years and just upgraded to the Mizuno's. If I didn't go with the Mizuno's I would have bought the Callaway X-Hot's. They were very comparable to the Mizuno's, probably a little more forgiving. That's not to say that the Mizuno's are not forgiving, the Callaway's just felt a little more solid on all shots. I went with the Mizuno's, because my game is getting better and I would like more feedback. -

Just bought a 2014 Sun Mountain Sync cart bag. Today was my first round using it, and so far it is great. Much better than my other bags I have had in the past. -

You wouldn't be if you would have turned him in and got him disqualified. Now you know what to do next time, which is what I have told myself a few times after playing in tournaments and learned a rule that I didn't already know. Live and learn.
-
IMHO, since this is a competitive golf tournament I would have brought it to the attention of the director. How do you know that the guy playing with you was going to win? Wasn't their 15-20 people in the tournament? Having said that, I see a few problems that could come from that. A) you will be the jerk who called this guy on a possible suspect rule and thus these 3 plus their friends might watch you like a hawk and try and find a rule infraction to do it back. B) Since all 3 others in your group were in on it, it would be your word versus the three of them. If they all deny it happening, nothing would come of it except you being the jerk. Lastly, I wouldn't know what to do if I was in your shoes. It's easy for me to say online what I would do, but that's Monday morning QB'ing it. I guess now that I know the rule, if the situation were to ever present itself again I would inform them about the disqualification that will happen if they do putt out of order.

10-2 . Stroke Play a . When Starting Play of Hole The competitor who has the honor at the first teeing ground is determined by the order of the draw. In the absence of a draw, the honor should be decided by lot. The competitor with the lowest score at a hole takes the honor at the next teeing ground . The competitor with the second lowest score plays next and so on. If two or more competitors have the same score at a hole, they play from the next teeing ground in the same order as at the previous teeing ground . Exception: Rule 32-1 (handicap bogey, par and Stableford competitions). b . During Play of Hole After the competitors have started play of the hole, the ball farthest from the hole is played first. If two or more balls are equidistant from the hole or their positions relative to the hole are not determinable, the ball to be played first should be decided by lot. Exceptions: Rules 22 (ball assisting or interfering with play) and 31-4 ( four-ball stroke play). Note: When it becomes known that the original ball is not to be played as it lies and the competitor is required to play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5 ), the order of play is determined by the spot from which the previous stroke was made. When a ball may be played from a spot other than where the previous stroke was made, the order of play is determined by the position where the original ball came to rest. c . Playing Out of Turn If a competitor plays out of turn, there is no penalty and the ball is played as it lies. If, however, the Committee determines that competitors have agreed to play out of turn to give one of them an advantage, they are disqualified. (Making stroke while another ball in motion after stroke from putting green – see Rule 16-1f ) (Incorrect order of play in foursome stroke play – see Rule 29-3 )
