  1. I thought of something ... what time are you playing the course? The onshore winds are strongest in the afternoon, and pretty dead in early morning up to about 10am-1pm. The marine layer (coastal clouds) will usually burn off by noon on most days, and speed up the greens. I was raised in San Diego and surfed a lot so I am pretty in tune with the coastal weather there, month by month. I can even probably predict the wind and sun for you on Monday. :)
  2. I'm okay with Winn's wearing out, I liked the feel of them compared to the Golf Prides... We'll see.
  3. Be sure to take some photos and then come back with your score and the photos! We need more "Trip Reports" here.
  4. Yep, South Course. Good luck! For extra challenge, tee off from the Open tees. :)
  5. Do you have a tee time on the South Course? If you don't, then you will be playing the back nine of the North Course, which is not really in US Open condition. The greens are fast right now, but there will be a lot of ground in repair and sprinklers going in the middle of the day. The rough is pretty high right now, but I think they're going to grow it another inch. It's a tough course, no matter what, so I think you'll have a good time.
  6. I actually did watch it, but I don't remember that practice. I need to pay closer attention. :)
  7. I found this: It seems to apply. Rule 28 -- Ball Unplayable If your ball is under a tree or in some other bad situation and you decide you cannot play it, add a penalty stroke and do one of the following: 1. Go back to where you played the last shot and play a ball from there 2. Measure two club-lengths from the unplayable lie, drop a ball and play from there 3. Keep the unplayable lie between where you drop the ball and the hole, go back as far as you wish on a straight line and drop and play the ball.
  8. Tsk tsk. :) That's not allowed as far as I know. The rule above states on the putting green only, unless there's another rule that I don't know of.
  9. Ben, What did you think of Rancho Park? Also, are there any other decent courses around West LA or the Miracle Mile area? I'm there frequently, and Rancho Park is the only 18 hole course around that area (i think). It's also SLOOOOOW.
  10. That's because you're from Porter Ranch. That place is as white as it gets, complete with cowboy hats and jangling spurs. Maybe there's some other races about, but every time i go to the valley in that area, around Chatsworth, etc, that's what I actually observe. :)
  11. Both were quite nice. Expensive, but as long as you've got a friend who's a member, it's all worthwhile. :) The water hazards at RSF intimidate me. I forgot, played Encinitas Ranch - that place is pretty nice. I didn't live in SD long enough to seriously get into golf, I was living in the bay area when I seriously got into golf. My parents live in SD so I bring my clubs with me every time I go, so I'm doing the laps around SD as much as I can. A family friend just got a membership at Crosby in RSF so I am going to bring him a bottle of wine next time I fly down :) :) :)
  12. A friend just posed an interesting situation to me: He was playing at the local muni and it had just rained, so the greens were a little soft. Too soft. He hit a high 6 iron onto the green, and the ball literally got stuck an inch and a half into the surface of the green, where it wasn't visible looking at it from afar - he was almost sure that he had holed it. He didn't know what the rule was, so he gave himself a free penalty, and removed the ball from the hole and put it a blade distance away, but there was a spirited discussion about what to do. I skimmed through the rule book and googled some, but didn't find anything. If the ball lands in mud on a fairway, it's played as is. However, you can't obviously take a big fat divot off a green. :) What say you, rule nazis?
  13. I put on some Eccos, and while the heel was comfortable - there was a huge glaring problem.. When I walked, the toe box would fold badly, and pinch the toes of my foot. I didn't think this was something that would break in, so I forego'd these shoes. I'm wearing Adidas AD Comforts now, and they're just that. Extremely comfortable. They're wearing out though, so I'm looking around a little bit.
  14. Isn't one of Firestone's par 5's 660 something yards? A hole that put the fear in even John Daly?
  15. I think about going back there at least once a month. It's so dramatic, and out there, it's just you, the course (and the hotel) and the landscape.
  16. Yeah, I would think so.. The cost is minimal too, just $75 for a full set of Winn's.
  17. I don't know if this belongs in Playgrounds, but I've got a question.. What are the courses you've played at over your whole life, starting with your home course now? Home Course: Stanford University Golf Course Courses Played: (California) Palo Alto G.C., Shoreline Muni, Cinnabar Hills G.C., Rancho Santa Fe C.C., Rancho Santa Fe Farms C.C., Fairbanks Ranch C.C., Torrey Pines North & South, Four Seasons Aviara G.C., Lomas Santa Fe C.C., Rancho Park C.C., Encinitas Ranch. (British Columbia) Rossland-Trail C.C., Christina Lake C.C. (Hawaii) The Challenge at Manele Bay, Kapalau G.C., The Dunes at Maui Lani You?
  18. Oops. I retract my statement. I wonder where I got that from - I should brush up on my reading skills :)
  19. Calling Vijay black would be like calling an apple a vegetable. Vijay is Fijian/Pacific Islander.
  20. This hole: #7, 486 yard par 5. Extreme left dogleg, and only the best faded driver shot will get you in contention for the green. There's a set of LARGE oak trees that protect the fairway past the left dogleg - but it's hittable. When Tiger plays this hole, he can hit over the trees - it's a 280-290 yard high shot to get over the trees to make it to the green in two. The green is like the hood of a car - shots that land on the green usually roll off, or you get it into the bunker. For me, I almost always overshoot the green after I lay it up for shot #3 and go into the OB in the back of the green (creek). There are a lot of overhanging oaks around the green as well, so if you get one under an oak tree, it's punch shot time. The 2nd shot is a difficult one as well, because the space where you make your 3rd attempt is very narrow with DEEP rough on either end. I've never made par here. Never.
  21. Lately, i've noticed that my grips have gotten a bit tacky and a bit worn in some places, so I guess this is an indicator of when I should re-grip. The grips have about 25-30 rounds on them, not including range time. My driver has about 10 rounds on it but is a little tacky too. Thinking about Winn's in a standard size. Any suggestions from Sandtrappers?
  22. You need a set of these on your bag:
  23. I wipe them down with a wet towel usually after a round or two. However, when I feel like it, I give them a REALLY good cleaning, maybe once or twice a year - this includes metal polish / car polish on the soles and the tops of the irons (not the faces), and toothbrush in a sink or bucket of warm water + detergent. I also fill in chips on the tops of my drivers and woods with a paint pen. I also may take the time to regrip them - I think I'm due for a regripping soon - the irons have stock grips with 3 years on them. I hit some clubs with Winn grips and they were.. quite awesome. As for polishing the clubs, you might ask why: The metal polish cleans out impurities that MIGHT rust the metal and gives the clubs a great glossy look. It won't make them look brand new unless you REALLY work on them with a buffer, but I just use a foam applicator and rag. :) The car polish is great for restoring the finish to the paint of the driver, removes ball marks, and smoothes out chips and scratches even though it doesn't help my game AT ALL - it just makes the clubs shiny and especially clean. Don't use the metal polish on your wedges if the wedges have a special finish on them, e.g. Vokey oil cans or CG Black Pearls. Also, don't use the metal polish on the faces of any of your clubs - you'll make the face slick. Just use rubbing alcohol or Goo Gone to clean the faces if you have ball marks on them.
  24. That's a par 6 though. This is par 5's we're talking about here. 841 yards, hmm... that is actually a lot of distance. I figure it based on the average-per-shot that it takes to get GIR. For example, for a 600 yard par 5, that's a 200-yard-per-shot average. Yours is 210 yards. That's pretty painful, and from the looks of it, the hazards are many.
