trying to finish out my bag
ridenemwild replied to ridenemwild's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Since I would primarily be hitting the wood off of the fairway I wonder how much difference there would be between a 3 and 4 wood? Some articles online are claiming some high handicappers are hitting the 4 wood longer off of the deck because of more loft and more control. -

I understand and that is pretty much what I am doing. I found that a 6 iron was the strongest iron I could hit consistently and use it 90% of the time instead of the 5 wood or hybrid. In fact the only time I consistently use the long clubs is on par 5s -
I would expect the overall mass of the clubs to be close to the same. The difference is on a cavity back the majority of the mass is moved from the heel and center to the toe to offset the torqueing of the club and to the bottom of the club to help get under the ball and get air born. SGI clubs have extra mass added to the bottom to really help get the ball airborn and have offset to help control slices.

I use my driver a lot because the course is very long (3 par 4s over 500 yards) but I tend to get in as much trouble with it as anything. Also I walk the course a lot so not having 14 clubs isn't a big deal. I wouldn't want to tote around a club I never use which is why I took the 3 wood and long irons out of my bag -

You are correct that I'm only carrying 10 clubs at the moment. I hit the 5 wood ~190 and the hybrid about 185. The reason I was thinking about a 4 wood is for a little more backspin and a shorter shaft to help me control it a little better. I'm still a high handicap and my home course is very tight and severely punishes any shots that are not at least close to the fairway. My current 5 wood is way out of date so looking to replace it in some form or another -
I'm looking to finish out my current golf setup. I currently play Ping G10 9° driver on graffaloy stiff shaft Older (80s) 5 wood 20° (left over from my starter set of grandpas leftover clubs) McGregor 20° hybrid with stiff flex shaft Bridgestone j33 cb with Bridgestone firm graphite shaft ( only 6-sw) And a taylormade putter I'm looking to fill the gap between driver and 6i. I hit the hybrid and 5wood about the same distance but hit the wood better off the fairway and the hybrid better from the rough. I was thinking about getting a 4 wood ~17° and then a new 20° hybrid and possibly a ~24° hybrid to fill the gap. A well hit drive for me will carry around 240-250 yards and a well hit 6i will carry about 175. Just wanting recommendations opinions

I am also extremely allergic to cigerette smoke so if I know that a certain place allows smoking then I just choose to take my business elsewhere. If I happened to go to a public place where there is smoking then I just move away from it or leave. But just because you are allergic or dislike something doesn't mean you should say someone else shouldn't do it. I still say that nonsmokers making more no smoking zones and complaining are just as big of an inconvenience as smokers. How many guys here where cologne? I'm allergic to certain colognes and being near someone wearing it can cause me to have an asthma attack. Yet I don't jump up and down and complain if someone is wearing it and it bothers me. I just move or leave. It would be just as wrong to ask someone wearing a certain cologne to leave or move as it is to ask smokers to leave or move

The right to breathe has nothing to do with it. The point I was trying to make is if you knew before going to the clubhouse on that night that they where going to allow smoking the why did you go? You are perfectly free to go to any other restaurant in town because they don't allow smoking. Why would you purposely go to a place where there is smoking if you feel so strongly against it?
-
If you feel so strongly against 2nd hand smoke then why did you go to the clubhouse on the 1 night each week that they allowed smoking? You knew before you entered the clubhouse that there was going to be smoking. Why not wait till the next night or any other day of the week? I'm not saying you are wrong to hate 2nd hand smoke because that is your choice. Just like it is a smokers choice to smoke. The smokers where smoking on a designated night and you where upset that you went there and they where smoking.
-
I understand the resentment of not wanting 2nd hand smoke bit at the same time smokers aren't allowed to smoke in so many places now that I think they enjoy the opportunity to smoke in outdoor locations. I know if I'm going to a bar or restaurant or outdoors location that allows smoking that I will in counter 2nd hand smoke. If you feel that strongly about 2nd hand smoke then don't go to these places. You are inconveniencing the smokers by complaining about their smoking as they are you by smoking. I think some of you take this issue too seriously. Remember that none of us are making it out of this world alive and will be remembered by how we treat others

All of the guys I play with are very considerate of etiquette and I follow suit so this hasn't been a problem for me on the course. But the local pro shop is another story. I can't pick a club up and try it out in there without the guy running the shop trying to give me a lesson. I guess in his defense that if he can fix my swing then I might buy the club because I hit it better. But it is very aggravating because the whole reason I'm trying out a new club to get a feel of it with my swing not a modified swing.

I'm not arguing with you saevel25 because i hate 2nd smoke as well but I would expect the smog in most cities/ large towns to cause more harm to your lungs than walking by someone smoking. On another note does anyone here smoke a pipe? I will always have good memories of going hunting with my dad and him smoking his pipe when we took a break ( it is the only time he would have aanything to do with tobacco products).

Breakfast of champions? I don't know about that but if I dont have a pinch in the morning my normally calm personality is a lot more volatile.
-
I also dip. My poison is Copenhagen snuff. Usually start craving a pinch around the 4th hole and my game usually picks up lol ( guess I finally relax a little and just enjoy the game). I used to drink a few beers while I played but it tended to make me dehydrate quicker so now its just water on the course and beers after the round. I also hate smoking on the course. Especially when people leave cigerette butts on the course. Its probly my biggest pet peeve.

I think making it a charity benefit for a well known and liked charity would help tremendously. Most people would have no problem paying a little extra for a round and some companies could possibly buy 4-5 slots. You would also get help from the charity on organizing and have extra hands to help out.

What's up with everyone's fascination with working the ball?
ridenemwild replied to NM Golf's topic in Golf Talk
I am a high handicapper and only attempt to work the ball if there is a tree in between me and the green and the only choices are left of the tree and lay up short or right of the tree and lay up short. My normal shot is a slight fade or dead straight and I am usually able to pull off the shot I want 60-70% of the time and I make sure that I'm not in trouble if I don't work the shot like I plan. As I side note when I started figureing out how to shape my shot I learned a lot about the dynamics of my swing and small ways to help me adjust to get better control of my shot. -
I'm new here as well and also have a high handicap and find that I'm a lot more consistent on long par 3s to play a short iron to around 75-100 yards from the hole ( especially if water is inbetween me and the whole) I would not spend the money to get another club just for one hole. Course management has helped me considerably. I went from shooting ~115 to breaking 100 and getting close to 90 the last few times I have played.

How do most of you warm up before a round? Any particular stretches or drills? My home course doesn't have a driving range and when I just line up and start playing it takes 2-3 holes before I settle down in my swing and feel smooth and relaxed.
