Bogey Golfers Only (Index 16-22) / Breaking 90 Topic
MissouriHack replied to rkim291968's topic in Golf Talk
I had a huge slice. Then I read another article about the new ball flight laws and if finally made sense to me. http://www.golfdigest.com/golf-instruction/2012-12/sean-foley-law-of-the-draw I went out to the range a couple of times and got this down. For me it was getting the path of the club head correct. I was really pleased with what happened. I would hit a big block now and then. But I will take that over the huge slice I had. -

Getting out of the tee box is really hard for me to do as well. I started hitting the longest club i could and still get it in the fairway. Laying up is a good idea but I wouldn't over do it. Its chess not checkers, just don't make it any harder than it already is. For guys like us if we have a bad miss the best thing is to do is to get it back into play while advancing the ball as far as you can. Sometimes its only a couple of yards. The point is too prevent compounding mistakes. You don't want to play so cautious that you can't play to your potential. -

Get lessons. I went for years without them. Spent a lot of time and money at the range and the course thinking i could figure it out on my own. Your girlfriends father my be a good golfer but what works for him might not work for you. Someone who teaches professionally will be able to help you build the correct fundamentals. This game is really hard and full of opposites. Trouble usually comes in two's, and its very hard to spot by yourself or someone who's not trained to do so. -

How I would most likely play this hole: 1. Pull up too the hole cursing the corse designer for protecting par in such a way. 2. Try and talk myself into playing this like a par 4. 3. Ignore myself completely. 4. Pull my three hybrid. Convince myself that I will completely crush it over the hole. 5. Pull my 4H 6. aim, and swing way too hard. 7. block it right and scream and yell at the ball to turn left. It coldly ignores me. 8. Ball hits the cart path and takes and epic bounce. 9. look at my playing partner as he is snickering under his breath at me and trying not to make eye contact. 10. I ask him how his mother is. 11. try and find my ball. Gone forever. 12. Play it as a lateral hazard so I don't drive the people behind us insane. 13. card a triple. 14. par the next two holes still fuming about this one. 15. Dream about breaking 90 on a regular basis. -

I play with a friend like this. He shoots a good 30 strokes over what I do. I used to get frustrated with it but not anymore. We talk about him getting some lessons but hes a busy guy. Its more about hanging out and having fun. But as I get better I can see starting to play with some other people that are more of the same skill lvl. As i improve I would like to play some nicer ( more expensive ) courses that are more challenging. With the additional investment I wouldn't want to play a round of golf with anyone who was less skilled than me. It can really throw your rhythm off and drag you down. I hope he gets lessons because his short game is killer. But it's like getting poked in the eye trying to watch him get to the green. -

I would agree with Lihu. Sounds like were all in the same boat. The only thing I will say is that I would not chase pins. If the pins are tight and you might miss the green and then your scrambling for par or a two putt bogey. Aim for the center of the green and at least you'll have a birdie putt. It might be a forty footer but its still a shot. You might even have a good miss that puts you right by the hole. You are doing the exact same thing that I was doing last year. Next you'll start replacing those bogies with pars and you'll see your scores drop. Practice a punch shot that will get you back on the fairway. Remember that shot that Tiger Woods hit and it went under a low hanging branch cut around a big oak and landed on the green six inches from the pin? Don't try that, your not him.:-P

Old blades for a "New" Golfer
MissouriHack replied to MissouriHack's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Went to the range again tonight and used the blades to go through my practice routine prescribed by my instructor. I also took along my more modern 6i. The time spent working with the blades seems to be paying off. Don't get me wrong I'm not dropping shots off my hadi by the double digits but the ball is coming off the club better. I would rather have the trajectory of the blades though. Its seems to be lower and gives the impression that it would play better in the wind. Could the trajectory have to do with the differences in shafts? Thoughts? -
Thats awesome man! keep it up.

I tried to stay away form making adjustments on the fly. the course was strange to me so my club selection could have been just as off with my old clubs if I would have played them. Saying that I dont swing the blades as hard because I know that I can't get away with it. Yesterday was really strange I was hitting in to my wedges from the Tee on the good shots (hit a 3wood that must have rolled out 60 yards). The bad tee shots usually resulted in me using a hybrid for my second. Saying that, if I had to play it again today, I would club up and take it easy. More like hitting a full swing chip shot if that makes any sense at all. Just trying to get the club on the ball under as much control as possible for me. The 18th hole is the only place were I made a change. Up hill in tho the wind, 128 to the center and hit a 7i to the front of the green. With my other clubs I would have smashed the dog snot out of a 9i. let me know how it goes. cheers -

I could tell when i did not hit the ball right on, but it wasn't the end of the world. I just didnt get the distance, like 1/2 a club to a full club less. But as far as it shooting off all crazy, that didnt happen. -

I had a lot of fun today. 5 greens 6 fairways and 40 putts. So I broke 100 but not buy much. A buddy and I played at a course that we never played before and it was really nice. The slope rating was higher than the place we normally play at. I liked they way the blades played and only chunked one shot. I did lose some distance but nothing too crazy. If I had to be honest I played way too aggressive off the tee. It was a course mismanagement day. But there was a couple of times that I was laughing so hard that I was almost crying, and the weather here was perfect. I would have to chalk it up as a great day. -

That sounds like a plan. I told my golfing buddy that I got them and now he wants me to play with them this sunday. I usually beat him like a step child so i think he is looking for some pay back. Lucky for me they have what I think are the original grips. So thats my out. But if you guys are up for it I'll get them out in the next couple of weeks. -

All completely well thought out and valid points. But I would rather not hide my swing faults with equipment. I think in the long run my game will be better off. At the end of the day the most important thing to concentrate on is the having fun. :-D -

Its nutz because I can hit them but that elusive great feeling has yet to come. I am going to get them fitted next week and go from there. I can feel myself getting sucked in and my handicap going up just sitting here. But strange enough I'm ok with that. One thing, I have a hell of a lot more respect for the pros of yesteryear. -
I just pick up a set of Golden Ram tour grind vibration matched Irons. They are in great shape. I really like these clubs. The set is 2-pw. The question is will these help me with my ball striking? I dont want to go play a round with them yet, but i would like to know what to expect and if anyone has had a set of these clubs? How will these compare to newer clubs? Thanks
