The Never Ending Struggle Continues
derekp replied to derekp's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Why is that not a good idea? I'm on a budget and quite frankly these clubs fit the budget and have some solid feedback from people using them. I'm not looking to get some of the best clubs on the market anyway since I'm just starting out. I just figured compared to other people's starter hand me down sets that this would be a nice starter for myself and wanted to know what either people thought. Maybe I'm wrong? I'm not getting these clubs because of the name on them or because I think they are some of the best on the market. I think you've taken the point of my post out of context. -
Alright so I'm still trying to find the right things to put my first bag together. I have roughly $550-$600 to be spending and need everything still. Here's what I'm thinking so far and any criticisms and critiques are welcome as well as what you think is another option for anything. Driver: http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/adams-...ul-driver.html 3 Wood: http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/adams-...rway-wood.html Hybrid: TBD. Although I think the girlfriend's grandfather might be getting me one. Irons: http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/adams-...irons-set.html Putter: http://www.3balls.com/product-productid/182254 Bag: No link for it but it's the 2006 Callaway Warbird XXT stand bag That's what I have so far and wanted to know how things looked so far. I've bashed my brain over what to get and would serve the best purpose and also have good quality and last me a little while. Any input is welcome and appreciated!

As i stated earlier, i'm suffering from a pretty painful foot injury right now and it hurts to perform simple functions, sometimes walking. It was probably foolish of me to go and get my swing speed measured given this injury since I'm in pain when I swing so I strongly feel that it drastically affected the way I was swinging. Plus I didn't want to try and swing to overly hard and mishit the ball or anything. I know that if I wasn't in my pain I would have been able to generate more power and perform a more complete swing. I'll try and get my swing measured again when I'm completely healthy.

I was recently just recommended taking a look at the Ben Hogan Edge CFT irons because they were supposed to better than the BH-5 irons and are only $20 extra. I'm still slightly skeptical about getting offset irons because the few times that I've played I haven't noticed too much of a slice to warrant specific offset irons. Anyone use the Edge CFT's and can give me some feedback would be great.
-
so umm should i be worried that these offset irons might cause me to hook the ball or am i being too paranoid at this point?
-
well i just turned 21 yesterday (go me) and have played sports all my life so i'd like to say im pretty athletic, maybe not as fit as i should be but that can change. so the regular flex shafts would be optimal for my swing speed regardless of irons or woods? sorry if im asking terrible questions, just really making sure on things before i spend money on clubs.

In conclusion, the guy at Dicks was full of it?
-
So for a beginner like myself, my indicated swing speeds should be able to increase a good amount as I learn to swing and move my body more fluently, correct? Is it possible to for someone who starts out playing swinging 70mph to be in the 90mph range after years of playing?
-
I actually don't know what handicap I am since I've only played a hand full of times on a Pro-Am Par3 course, so I just put that I was a 36 handicap randomly. I've only used a few clubs from an old set that belonged to my girlfriends grandfather. To answer your question, from 150 yards out I pull out the 7 iron.

I went and got my swing speed measured at Dicks and asked the person working the golf department if as you progress and your game gets better (I'm a beginner) if your swing speed can increase. I was told that generally players' swing speed stays pretty consistent and won't change too much. Is this correct? Can your swing speed increase from 80mph to say 95mph over time? Also, my iron swing speed was clocked at 70mph and my driver speed was 80mph. However, in my defense I'm dealing with a pretty painful foot injury wearing sport sandals and wasn't able to swing as complete and powerful as I would have liked to. Given this information, should I get all graphite shafts or should I stick to my plan of getting my iron set with steel shafts and hope that my swing speed will increase as my game develops (assuming that's possible)?

i've only golfed a few times at a par 3 course and when i do miss it's off to the right. although i dont slice terribly, would specific irons with a little more offset help more than regular irons?
-
unfortunately, the ben hogan line isn't being sold at any stores local to me. i'm going based off reviews from other people and the price for what seems like a quality set. i'm on a budget for my first set, being a college student so high end clubs aren't an option. basically, would i benefit more from more offset clubs than regular due to me being new to the game?

As you may or not be aware from an earlier thread, I am looking to put together my first set of clubs and now I have another question. So basically I was browsing and started to like the Ben Hogan BH-5 Offset irons because they seemed like a decent set of irons (3-PW) at a really good price. My questions is this, the irons are Offset and I was wondering if that's a good thing for a beginner player like myself. To my understanding an offset club is to help with forgiveness for those mishit shots. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong. If people have any experience with these irons and can shed some light that would be great, even though they have seemed to get some good reviews from previous users. Also, for $119.99 for like new clubs off of the callawaypreowned website, I feel that is a damn good deal. One last thing, when websites say this item is "Like New" do they mean that it's pretty much brand new and it was just maybe a floor model or an opened box that was returned? Thanks again.

bump. would like some more comments on the above sets as far as experiences and overall performance factors. still in the market of trying to find a good reliable first set to get my game going but am still getting mixed reviews from other people. i'm also open to suggestions for other quality brands. kind of on a budget on this one and can't really afford to get anything more than $300. thanks

Alright well, I just took up golf at the ripe age of 20 and the girlfriend (who has been playing forever) said she would buy me a set of clubs for my birthday. I don't need an expensive set, obviously. Just looking for decent cheap set that will get me started and help me expand my game. Any advice on these sets of clubs that I'm thinking about would be appreciated. Top-Flite XL5000 (Made by Callaway so I figured there would be some quality to them) http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/pr...ductId=2877810 Golden Bear Mega SQ (Don't know much about the brand so can't really say anything about these besides it looks like a solid deal) http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/pr...ductId=3002551 I'm leaning towards the Top-Flite set but just wanted some advice from other people on a beginner needing clubs, or if anyone has used either of the clubs.
